Livi boss 'three or four players away' from perfect squad

Livingston boss David Martindale says he’s “three or four signings away from the ideal squad” as his side ran out 1-0 winners against Championship side Queen’s Park on Monday.

A Bruce Anderson header was all it took to separate the sides at a rain-soaked Lesser Hampden in Livi’s final pre-season friendly.

And Martindale confirmed he was happy with the preparations as they headed into their first group match of the Viaplay Cup campaign against Brechin. Speaking after the match, he said: “I think we’re okay. Stepped up the opposition on Friday and tonight so we’re in a good place.

“Ideally I want to bring another two in, maybe three – need another one 100 per cent – and we’d be in a good place.

“But you’ll ask any manager and he’s three or four players away from having the ideal squad. I’ll sign three or four players and then I’ll say the same thing in January.”

When asked about what areas he’s looking to strengthen, Martindale replied: “I’m looking to strengthen the defensive unit. I think I’m okay with the midfield area but I need to add to the forward line so ideally I’d like another defensive player, someone who is a wee bit versatile, that can probably cover middle centre back, right centre back, right back that type, and then looking for a No 9 and someone who can play off the sides.

“It helps out massively when you can recruit players who can play two or three positions so probably I’m looking for that bit of versatility, that kind of signing.”

At the game, Livingston adopted a pressing approach early on that seemed to trouble the Queen’s Park defence, however they were unable to capitalise on any errors made.

The deadlock would be broken five minutes after the break however.

Great play by Bahamboula forced a corner out of nothing, with the initial cross cleared.

This fell to Scott Pittman who struck a beauty from all of 30 yards, forcing McKenna into another great save.

The rebound, however, fell to Boyes, whose cross found Bruce Anderson on the edge of the box.

His header was well placed into the right bottom corner beating the Spiders’ keeper.
