TAKASAKI -- About 670 pigs, mainly piglets, were stolen between July and August in seven theft cases targeting pig farms in Gunma Prefecture. The thefts resulted in a total of 20 million yen in damages, police said.

According to the Gunma prefectural police, the thieves targeted farms in Maebashi, Isesaki, Ota and Tatebayashi mostly at night. Pigs of several months old were predominantly stolen. The police are investigating the cases on the assumption that the robberies were committed in a group.

In the prefecture, the police also confirmed thefts of two cows in Tatebayashi and the town of Oizumi, and 28 chickens in Isesaki. The police are investigating if those cases are connected.

In Tochigi Prefecture, meanwhile, six cows, including Japanese black cattle calves, were stolen from two farms in Ashikaga between June 20 and Aug. 23. A security camera installed at one of the farms showed a calf with its front and back legs tied being carried into a car.
