Neco Williams stakes first-team claim with powerhouse display against Shrewsbury Town

On another night Neco Williams could have had a hat-trick.

As it was he had to settle for the assist that provided Liverpool, the youngest Liverpool side in history that is, with a fourth round FA Cup replay win against Shrewsbury Town.

That was the same Shrewsbury Town that drew 2-2 against a team stocked with senior Reds players just a week and a half ago.

This may have had an average age of just 19 years and 102 days but you would have never known it from their sensational, and at times totally dominating, performance.

And Williams, the young right-back, was arguably the best player on the field in the second-half and that is a serious compliment when his team-mates played absolutely superbly.

But it is one he deserves.

The 18-year-old was not only solid in defence but in similar mould to Trent Alexander-Arnold burst forward at every given opportunity.

In one of the biggest moments of the first half Adam Lewis, who was making his debut, switched the ball from left-back towards and the clever young attacker, who terrified the visitors defence, knocked it inside for Williams to drive onto before making his way into the box and firing at goal only for it to flash past Max O’Leary’s right post.

In the second-half it was much of the same from the Welshman as the constant outlet down the right-hand side to give his team-mates an option to play the ball out of danger.

And the youngster was genuinely unlucky not to open the scoring, two volleys just over the bar and one huge chance after Elliott threaded it wide to the defender inside the Shrewsbury box which O’Leary got a boot to, to turn it behind low down left.

But Williams got his reward after delivering a cracking through ball up towards the Shrewsbury penalty area. The ball left Ro-Shaun Williams backpeddling, with an incoming Elliott ready to pounce behind him, and he tried to head back to his goalkeeper only for the ball to fly straight over O'Leary and into the net.

After the young Reds had opened the scoring Shrewsbury naturally poured forward, but time and time again Williams was alert to the danger, clearing corners, intercepting through balls and winning headers while staying strong at all times to keep the ball and play Liverpool out of trouble with Ki-Jana Hoever and the commanding next to him.

As the match entered into four minutes of added time it was Williams, who will surely now be in hot contention to make the Wales Euro 2020 squad, combining with the excellent Curtis Jones to win Liverpool a corner and keep the Reds at the business end of the field to seal a famous victory under the lights at Anfield.

However, not only was this a famous victory, this was a win that keeps Liverpool’s hopes of sealing a tremendous treble still on course not least due to the brave and wonderful efforts of those in red.

The future of the club is in very safe hands.
