Liverpool youngster responds to extra demand as new right-back emerges

The ability to quickly absorb advice is a welcome trait for any budding young footballer.

And, happily for Liverpool, Tyler Morton appears to have no problems in responding to fresh demands from the Academy coaching staff.

Morton celebrated his 18th birthday on Saturday by netting twice as the Reds secured an impressive 4-1 win over Newcastle United at Kirkby in their U18 Premier League clash.

And coach Marc Bridge-Wilkinson has revealed the midfielder had been urged to provide greater numbers to his overall play.

"The goals are something we are trying to add to his game," said the U18s coach. "We talked last week and did a little review with him.

"We spoke to him about adding more goals to his game and provide more assists in the final third.

"He's managed to get two here. It's great that he's started arriving in the box more, and if he keeps doing that and getting in at the right time, he'll score more."

Among several encouraging performances for Liverpool was that of 16-year-old Isaac Mabaya at right-back.

The England U16 international, who has stepped up to the U18s at Academy this season, is normally used as a midfielder.

And explaining the change, Bridge-Wilkinson said: "It's something we have been looking at in training in the last week so we felt it was right to give Isaac a go.

"I've been fortunate in that I've worked with Isaac for the last two years or so on and off.

"I know an awful lot about him, his game and his character. It doesn't surprise me that he's capable of playing at this level."

Max Woltman and Layton Stewart also found the target for Liverpool, with Newcastle having twice hit the woodwork before netting a late consolation on a blustery afternoon.

"It was a good game, end to end," said Bridge-Wilkinson. "Maybe there was a bit of innocence of youth with the lads running around, but we put in a good performance.

"I thought Newcastle played very well. They gave us a more problems than other teams have given us when they've come here.

"The conditions played a part initially but we actually thought the wind would be worse than what it was."
