Liverpool youngster Neco Williams offered support as fans turn on fellow supporters who abused him and sparked social media blackout

Liverpool fans have offered Neco Williams countless messages of support after the 19-year-old blacked out his Twitter account following the online abuse he received.

The Wales international played in Liverpool's 7-2 drubbing of Lincoln City on Thursday night, a result which saw Jurgen Klopp's side progress to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The Welshman was reportedly targetted with online abuse after making a mistake that resulted in Lincoln's first goal.

And, after the match, supporters quickly realised that Williams had changed his profile picture and cover photo to black tiles on his Twitter account in what is thought to be a response to social media trolls.

Williams is one of the hottest recent prospects to come out of the Premier League champions' academy in recent years, of that there is no doubt.

He has shot into Liverpool fans' consciousness over the last few months, having been given a number of opportunities in the first team and impressing. He is now seen as a more than capable back-up for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Just this month, too, he further endeared himself to Wales fans when he scored the 94th-minute winner against Bulgaria to ensure Ryan Giggs' side secure top spot in their Nations League pool.

So there is little doubt that this young Welshman has a bright future in the game.

However, a small minority chose to target Williams on social media during the Lincoln City win on Thursday night.

But Reds fans hit back at the trolls and left Williams in no doubt that he is loved by supporters up on Merseyside, as well, no doubt, as those who have followed his progress in this corner of the world.

It is fair to say, too, that Klopp also rates the Wrexham-born teenager and spoke highly of him after the right back last month penned a contract extension which will keep him at Anfield until 2025.

“I think Neco is – how young players are – they are kind of ‘projects’. I don’t want to use that word, but with my English I don’t have a better one,” Klopp said in August.

“There is a lot of work to do, but there is already a lot of skills and potential there and that makes it so exciting.

Neco from the first day he trained with us, he trained like a machine. Every day he became better and better and better and I thought, ‘OK, what’s that?!’

"Unfortunately then, in the moment he started playing for us, I saw it, he got a little physical knock, like it was always really intense all of the time. But then he had to play.

“The last game of the season against Newcastle is a really good example – first half, struggled slightly, [but] second half he was there.

“That’s exactly him in the moment and there is so much positivity about this kid that I am really happy we have him here. That’s very important for me because he is our boy and it is the perfect place for him in the moment because we don’t rush his career.”
