Liverpool youngster Ki-Jana Hoever on his Champions League squad omission and difference made by Jurgen Klopp's hugs

Ki-Jana Hoever admits it is a "shame" he was left out of Liverpool's Champions League squad and has vowed to prove he can be involved in the New Year.

Hoever was the main omission from the 29-man list submitted by the Reds earlier this month for the competition's group stage.

The 17-year-old Dutchman, who made his senior debut in the FA Cup third round tie at Wolverhampton Wanderers last January, was part of the Champions League squad for the knockout stages last season although he was not involved in any of the matchday squads.

And having been on the bench in the UEFA Super Cup win over Chelsea last month, Hoever is determined to impress Jurgen Klopp over the coming months to regain his European place.

“I am not so concerned with it and didn't know the selection was coming," said the defender, speaking to Voetbal International.

"I was there (in the squad) in the second half of the season, but they told me that it was viewed per position and that I shouldn't worry too much about it.

“It’s a shame, but of course they have a large group. I’m already very happy to be able to train with them. Now I have to work hard and hope to be there in January. I’m still young.”

Hoever also discussed his relationship with Klopp, and revealed the difference a trademark gesture can make from the Reds boss.

“His hugs are nice, yes!" he said. "That gives confidence. He makes clear that he has an interest in the young players and that is just very nice.”
