Liverpool youngster Abdi Sharif signs new deal after overcoming serious knee injury

Liverpool have handed a contract extension to versatile academy youngster Abdi Sharif.

The 19-year-old, who originally joined the Merseyside club at the age of just six, signed his first professional deal last summer.

However, his career was subsequently interrupted by a serious knee injury suffered during pre-season.

Sharif has since been working his way through a rehabilitation programme aimed at having him ready for the 2020-21 campaign.

And the Reds have now given the Toxteth-raised teenager, who is capable of playing in a variety of positions, the chance to make up for lost time by extending his stay.

“It meant the world to me, signing a new extension,” Sharif told the club's official website after penning fresh terms.

“I don’t think you get the opportunity to play for an amazing football club like Liverpool too often, so I was excited to sign.

“The staff that’s been around me throughout my injury, I can’t thank them enough, there’s so many to name.

“I just want to thank all of them for being there for me and I just can’t wait to get back at it and give everything that I have.”

Sharif was part of the U18s team that won the 2019 FA Youth Cup, beating Manchester City on penalties in the final.
