Liverpool XI vs Newcastle: Starting lineup, confirmed team news, injury latest for Premier League today

Big decision: Florian Wirtz - (London Standard)

Dominik Szoboszlai will deputise the injured Jeremie Frimpong at right-back as Liverpool visit Newcastle tonight.

The reigning Premier League champions head to St James’ Park hoping to make it two wins from two at the start of the season after triumphing over Bournemouth in a six-goal thriller last week.

However, the Reds lost summer signing Frimpong to injury early in the second half at Anfield and it has since been confirmed he will play no part against the Magpies due to a sore hamstring.

With regards to replacing Frimpong, Slot had revealed that Conor Bradley is back in training and that Joe Gomez is in contention, but neither get the nod - both are named to the bench.

“So, there are other options we can explore. Joe Gomez is definitely one of them, but for him to play already 20 minutes, that was already quite a lot,” Slot told reporters.

“I wouldn’t say he had a setback but he wasn’t able to train three days in a row completely with the team.

“Which is completely normal if you’re out for so long and all of a sudden the manager needs you for 20 minutes.

“But he is training with the team, so let’s see where he is on Monday, if he can be involved in the team or if he can even start.”

The Hungary international operated in a deeper role against Bournemouth, but could be restored to the No10 position with Ryan Gravenberch returning from suspension to partner Alexis Mac Allister.

Big-money summer signing Florian Wirtz keeps his place behind Liverpool’s unchanged front three as Hugo Ekitike - linked with a move to Newcastle earlier in the window - looks to continue his impressive start to life in England.

Elsewhere, there are few surprises in the squad, though new addition Giovanni Leoni could make his debut off the bench.

Liverpool starting XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Jones, Van Dijk, Konate, Kerkez; Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, Wirtz; Salah, Ekitike, Gakpo

Subs: Mamardashvili, Gomez, Endo, Bradley, Chiesa, Leoni, Elliott, Robertson, Ngumoha

Injured: Frimpong

Time and date: 8pm BST on Monday, August 25, 2025
