Liverpool XI the youngest in club’s history with average age of 19 years, six months and three days

Liverpool have named the youngest starting XI in their history for this evening's Carabao Cup clash with Aston Villa.

With Jurgen Klopp and his senior squad in Qatar for the Club World Cup, a youthful side has been left behind to contest tonight's game under the watch of U23s boss Neil Critchley.

Remarkably, it contains seven teenagers, including 16-year-old summer signing Harvey Elliott as the team's youngest representative.

Twenty-two-year-old midfielder Pedro Chirivella is the oldest name on the teamsheet, and captains the Reds as a result.

That makes for an average age across the starting XI of just 19 years, six months and three days.

The previous record, set for an FA Cup clash with Plymouth Argyle in January 2017, was 21 years, nine months, and 23 days.

Liverpool’s starting XI: Kelleher, Hoever, Van den Berg, Boyes, Gallacher, Christie-Davies, Chirivella, Kane, Elliot, Hill, Longstaff
