Liverpool 'would pick Timo Werner over Jadon Sancho' but could sign both

Liverpool reportedly favour a move for Red Bull Leipzig's Timo Werner over Borussia Dortmund starlet Jadon Sancho.

Jurgen Klopp has raided the Bundesliga in the past and is an keen admirer of both players, who have been linked with a transfer to Anfield this summer.

But according to the Athletic, Werner is the preferred choice as Sancho would be too expensive.

The Reds would have to break their current transfer record to land Sancho, with a fee of £120million being mooted for the England international.

By contrast, Werner would be available for a significantly lower fee of £52million if Liverpool were prepared to meet his release clause.

The Athletic's report adds that a move for both stars is unlikely, given the huge combined financial outlay, but could be an option if one of Liverpool's current front three wanted to leave the club.

Klopp is at odds about spending huge sums to bring in a forward who would often be left on the bench.

At 24 and 19 respectively, Werner and Sancho offer potential in the years to come, but they would have limited chances in the first-team next season behind Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

Werner has even admitted recently that he is unsure about signing for Liverpool given his concerns over playing time.

"At this time in professional soccer there are two different variations," Werner said. "The first is to be part of a team like Liverpool or Manchester City.

"They have a good working team. The teams have also great coaches.

"But this is the question: do you want to go to that kind of team, because the situation is already that hard for each member and you want to be a part of it? That's one point you have to look at."

Sancho meanwhile looks certain to swap Dortmund for the Premier League this summer, with Man Utd current front-runners for his signature, if Liverpool decide not to make a bid.
