Liverpool 'won' the Champions League when they signed Xherdan Shaqiri - here's why

Xherdan Shaqiri signed for Liverpool last summer from a relegated Stoke City for around £13million.

The Swiss international featured four times in a triumphant Champions League campaign and contributed two assists.

Shaqiri's most important moment came in the 4-0 comeback against Barcelona, as he provided an assist to Gini Wijnaldum which capped off an energetic performance from the 27-year-old and put the Reds in touching distance of the Madrid final.

Interestingly, when the attacking midfielder was signed for Bayern Munich from Basel in 2012 it followed the Bavarians' Champions League final defeat to Chelsea.

In the following campaign the Bundesliga giants clinched the European crown for a fifth time as they overcame Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

Similarly to Bayern, Liverpool reached back-to-back finals, and having tasted defeat in Kiev 12 months ago, they were able to harness the feeling of dejection and launch themselves onto the winners podium this time around.

Following the Reds' 2-0 win over Tottenham at the weekend, Shaqiri has now won the Champions League in his debut season with both clubs.

The playmaker has clearly been a 'lucky charm' for Liverpool and has also made clear his plans to stay at Anfield.

"I'm at Liverpool FC, the best club in Europe," Shaqiri told Goal and SPOX.

"The manager has many good options and has to decide who can play. I knew before my transfer that the competition here is very tough.

"I have a long-term contract and I definitely will stay."
