Liverpool Women sign domestic treble winner Megan Campbell and Jasmine Matthews

Top-flight veteran Megan Campbell has signed for Liverpool FC Women as Jasmine Matthews returns to Prenton Park after two years at Bristol City.

Campbell became the third signing of the week joining the Reds after five years at Manchester City.

A decorated player, the left back helped the Manchester side to a domestic treble and provided two assists in the club's 2017 FA Cup final win.

The Republic of Ireland international started her national career at a young age, representing her country at under-17, under-19 and senior level. She was part of the team that came runners up in the 2010 UEFA Women's Under 17 Championship scoring two goals in the tournament, and the quarter-finalist team at the 2010 FIFA Under 17 World Cup.

Earlier this week, her Republic of Ireland teammate Leanne Kiernan became Liverpool's first signing of the summer.

Campbell joined City from the American college system and her time at the Florida State Seminoles brought one national title and one runners-up spot.

Campbell is hoping her success and experience will lift Liverpool to promotion next season.

She said: "I've played and trained with a lot of successful players from different cultures, Olympic medal winners, World Cup winners, European winners, so I've been around it and seen what it takes to get to the top and stay at the top.

"I hope I can help the club get promoted and get back to where it belongs.

"Matt [Beard] has been great for me and when he contacted me and said he wanted to bring me here, that was brilliant for me – hearing a manager wanted me so badly.

"So when I got the opportunity, I was never going to turn it down. I'm really looking forward to this challenge. The manager has put his trust and faith in me.

"I know the girls, from seeing a few interviews and stuff, were quite disappointed not getting promoted last year, and I know they will have fire in their bellies and are ready to push on now."

Liverpool Women's boss Matt Beard believes the signing of Campbell adds valued experience to his squad.

“Meg offers a bit of versatility as she can play centre-back or left-back,” said Beard.

“She’s a fantastic footballer who has been a bit unlucky with injuries over the last year or so and I think it just fits for us and it fits for her.

“It’s another player who knows how to win things and has been involved in a club that is challenging. Her experience is going to be very valuable for us this campaign.”

Jasmine Matthews became the third player to reunite with Matt Beard at Liverpool this week.

Matthews spent the 2018/2019 season with the Reds and made 10 appearances for the side.

Matthews, who will wear the number six shirt, can be deployed as both a defender and a midfielder.

The 28-year-old returned to the club after two seasons at Bristol City, where she trained under Beard.

Beard said: “Jas is a very, very good footballer, she surprised me. She reads the game really well, technically she’s gifted, she can pass the ball well and she’s got great vision.

“She knows the football club, she’s versatile and can play centre-back or midfield, and she’s going to be a really good asset to the squad.”

Matthews has many years of experience in the WSL and has set her sights on helping the Reds return to the top-flight.

She said: “I’m delighted to be back. When I knew Matt was coming to Liverpool it was always on the radar to come back.

“I loved playing in front of the fans here, they build up a great atmosphere and I had a great relationship with the girls.

“Working with Matt at Bristol, he really got the best out of me so when we had a conversation it was always going to be a no-brainer.”
