Liverpool Women put five past Coventry to earn first victory of the season

Kirsty Linnett scored a first half hat-trick as Liverpool Women beat Coventry United 5-1 to earn their first win of the season.

The Reds were playing their second fixture of the Continental Cup after a defeat to Sheffield United in their opening Group A game.

Vicky Jepson's side endured a difficult start to the season, losing their opening four matches, but they picked up their first league point last weekend and now look to be full of confidence.

Niamh Charles gave Liverpool the lead inside three minutes with a header from a Linnett corner.

Linnett then doubled their advantage almost instantly when she followed up a Rinsola Babajide's shot that had been well saved.

The goals kept coming as Coventry quickly pulled one back in the eight minute through Rosie Axten.

However, the combination of Babjide and Linnett struck once more as the striker got her second goal of the game after meeting the winger's cross.

Linnett completed her hat-trick with a penalty before the interval to give the Reds a comprehensive lead.

Jess Clarke marked her 50th Liverpool appearance with a goal in the 67th minute to heap more misery on Coventry.

The win puts the Reds second in Group A, three points behind leaders Durham.

Jepson's side are back in action next week as they travel to Birmingham City looking to make it three games unbeaten .
