Liverpool winger Sadio Mane undergoes surgery on hand injury ahead of Huddersfield trip

Sadio Mané has undergone surgery on a minor hand injury suffered while on international duty, Liverpool have confirmed.

Mané was taken hospital after breaking his left thumb in training ahead of Senegal's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan.

The 26-year-old subsequently returned to Merseyside and underwent successful surgery on the thumb, under supervision from members of Liverpool's medical team.

Mané's condition will be monitored ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Huddersfield Town for Jurgen Klopp's side, though his involvement remains in doubt.

Liverpool are also waiting on the fitness of Mohamed Salah, who suffered a groin injury in Egypt's win over eSwatini, and Naby Keita, who underwent scans on a suspected hamstring problem on Wednesday.

Virgil van Dijk missed the Netherlands' friendly against Belgium on Tuesday night following Ronald Koeman's claim that the defender had played with two broken ribs for several weeks.

Van Dijk's injury pre-dates the international break, having first surfaced after Liverpool's win over Paris Saint-Germain last month.

The Dutch international and James Milner, who suffered a hamstring injury in the draw with Manchester City, are both in contention to play against Huddersfield.
