Liverpool will not rival Chelsea in bid to sign Timo Werner as Blues close in on RB Leipzig star

Liverpool will not rival Chelsea in the battle for Timo Werner’s signature as the RB Leipzig striker closes in on a move to Stamford Bridge.

Werner has long been linked with a move to Anfield and went public with his desire to work in the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp in February.

However, while the Germany international now looks set to get his move to England this summer - and it will see him link up with Frank Lampard in the capital.

Liverpool had recently taken to strongly denying any desire to follow up on their past interest in Werner, who has scored 75 goals in 122 Bundesliga appearances in Leipzig.

With Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino set to stay put this summer, the Reds feel they would have been unable to offer the sort of regular game time the 24-year-old might expect.

That famed front three have been virtually ever-present for Liverpool since first being assembled by Klopp ahead of the 2017-18 season.

The German is believed to favour relying on his current crop of fringe players, including Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino, to back them up next term.

But, with Salah and Mane set to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations in the middle of the campaign, that period could prove a major test for Liverpool’s back-up men.
