Liverpool will be champions 'in everyone's head' even if season is void, says Arsene Wenger

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Liverpool will still be considered “champions in everyone’s head” – even if they are never crowned.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are a colossal 25 points clear of second-placed Man City and were just two wins away from clinching their first Premier League title when the coronavirus shutdown began.

Plans to get the remaining fixtures played are in full swing as part of Project Restart but there is significant opposition to some elements of the proposals and there are no guarantees that the season will be played out.

Some countries to have cancelled the remainder of their campaigns have still crowned champions – including in France, where PSG have been awarded the title – but others, such as the Netherlands, have simply voided the season.

Wenger, who now works in a technical role at Fifa after leaving Arsenal following the 2017/18 season, paid tribute to Klopp and his side.

“Jurgen has done extremely well because that club has waited 30 years for this title,” the Frenchman told TalkSPORT.

“And when you think they have such a massive difference [points gap] to the second team, Manchester City, as well – 25 points, it’s absolutely massive.

“No matter what England will decide, Liverpool are champions in everyone’s head, I think.”
