Liverpool West Derby constituency guide for the 2019 General Election

With the 2019 General Election drawing closer, we've taken a look a closer look at seats across Merseyside.

The election takes place on December 12 and follows general elections in 2015 and 2017.

Across our Merseyside region there are 15 constituencies, with five of those sitting within Liverpool.

Liverpool West Derby is one of those five seats.

Analysis of the area

Liverpool West Derby has been Labour-controlled since 1964, when the party turned over a Conservative majority and ended a long line of Tory dominance.

Since then, the party's majority in the seat has grown progressively more solid, with Stephen Twigg's 32,908 vote majority in 2017 being the largest the party has ever achieved.

Mr Twigg, who has been the MP for the area since 2010, announced earlier this year that he would not be standing for re-election, triggering a rancorous contest within Labour to succeed him.

Councillor Ian Byrne, office manager to Walton MP Dan Carden, eventually won the contest despite historic offensive social media comments posted by him coming to light.

However the contest left the local party divided, with major names left off the party's shortlist and the selection going to several recounts before Mr Byrne was declared the winner.

Aside from the country's two largest parties the Liberal Party, which has its base in Liverpool, tends to put up a strong challenge.

The party's councillors in the city come from wards within the boundaries and in 2017 party leader and election candidate Steve Radford beat the Lib Dems and the Greens to finish third.

These five parties will be joined by the Brexit Party at this election.
