Liverpool welcome 'complete striker' to Anfield as they face Champions League test

One of Europe's top marksman will be on display at Anfield on Wednesday night, and he won't be wearing red.

The likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have developed a reputation over a number of years to the extent that they are now considered as elite performers, particularly in the Champions League.

However, based on this season's numbers, none of those three established stars can compete with Red Bull Salzburg's teenage sensation, Erling Braut Haaland.

The Norwegian striker was signed by the Austrian champions in January, departing from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's former club, Molde, for a fee in the region of £5m.

Since, though, he's performed to a level that can't be ignored.

Haaland has featured nine times for Salzburg so far this season in the Austrian Bundesliga and the Champions League, with 14 goals scored as well as four assists being registered.

He's averaging a goal involvement roughly every 40 minutes based on that output, which is remarkable considering he's only 19-years-old.

For perspective, the best in the Premier League last season for minutes per goal contribution was Sergio Aguero, having posted an involvement every 95 minutes.

Haaland is scoring at a rate of almost two goals per match, with a figure of 1.77 goals per 90 based on his showings this season.

When delving into his shots, it's easy to see why.

The teenage striker is shooting 4.8 times per 90, which is a lot and is currently dwarfing the numbers posted by Jurgen Klopp's infamous front three. Salah is averaging 3.4 shots in comparison, with Mane on 2.3 and Firmino, 2.8.

The general rule of thumb is that the more a player shoots, the more he tends to score, and Haaland is certainly epitomising that at present.

Aside from his numbers, Haaland seems to pass the eye test too. He's about as physically built as Virgil van Dijk at around 6-foot-4, while also boasting speed that is uncharacteristic for a player of his size.

These traits permit Haaland to operate as a relatively complete striker, despite being in the embryonic stages of his career.

The Salzburg youngster is able to use his body to shield the ball and bring others into play, while also offering a threat in behind by getting on the end of through balls, shown below.

It's extremely likely that he's benefiting from facing opponents that are generally weak, but he did manage to bag a hat-trick in his debut Champions League fixture for the Austrian side around two weeks ago against Genk.

Ultimately, Haaland's form may simply be the consequence of a hot streak, but based on his underlying numbers as well as the apparent strengths that he possesses, it's reasonable to suggest that he's the real deal.

Once he accumulates more minutes on the pitch, his averages will decrease somewhat, but he appears scarily good for his age regardless.

The upcoming contest at Anfield will be the striker's first big test against elite opposition, with his battle against Liverpool and the world's best centre-back sure to be intriguing.
