Liverpool weather: Met Office predict 150mph jet stream bringing wind and rain

Unsettled weather is due to hit Merseyside this week as the Met Office forecast says a 150mph jet stream will cross the north Atlantic.

Forecasters say the jet stream, which determines a lot of the weather over the country, will bring low pressure from the west, leading to wind and rain. As the jet stream strengthens, to 150mph, so will the wind and rain.

Winds are likely to be strongest in the Northwest from Wednesday, with it peaking on Thursday into Friday. But for today, on Tuesday, May 24, there will be sunny spells and showers.

Rain will develop from mid-morning, with some heavy downpours for a time, before it turns drier with some sunshine to end the day. A c loudy and wet to start on Wednesday will lead to blustery showers in the afternoon.

It's set to remain blustery then into Thursday, with some rain also expected. It may be drier on Friday, but winds are still expected to be strong. Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Adam Thornhill said: "The jet stream is strengthening through the week and as a result will be the driving force behind low pressure moving in off the Atlantic and bringing periods of rain and wind for most of this week.

"The strongest winds will be in the northwest and although most areas of the UK will see some rain in the week, the highest accumulations are expected in western areas, with the southeast most likely to escape any rain. Weather of this nature isn’t unusual in a UK spring, as changes in the jet stream frequently bring interludes of unsettled weather."
