Liverpool weather: highs of 21C but warnings of thunderstorms

Merseyside is set for another warm day with temperatures expected to hit 21C. However across the country there are also warnings of heavy rain and thunderstorms possible.

Today will start dry and fresh, with plenty of sunshine and only light winds forecast. However into the afternoon clouds will appear from the south bringing with it a band of rain.

Heavy showers will move quickly however and into the night it's expected to be clear overall. Thursday, May 19, will be dry and sunny with highs of 20C.

The outlook for Friday and into the weekend is more sunshine and showers. It will be largely dry but cloudy on Saturday, before a spell of rain moves in on Sunday, according to the Met Office.

Met Office forecaster Clare Nasir said: "Over the next few days always a chance of rain or showers, thundery showers at that but mostly by night, by day some quieter weather until Friday.

"For the time being this band of rain is heavy, strong winds associated with it across Northern Ireland and western Scotland, trailing down towards northern England and eastern counties where there could be the odd rumble of thunder associated with any showery burst. It is clearing very quickly up towards Shetland where we will see winds pick up to near gale force."
