Liverpool weather forecast: What you can expect when the showers and thunderstorms pass

People on Merseyside were not impressed when the region was hit with a yellow warning for thunderstorms.

Thankfully the showers and lighting that came with the spells have now passed and are likely to stay away as Liverpool and its surrounding areas are expected to bask in a heatwave for some time now.

Between 1am and 9am on Wednesday morning, the city was washed out with heavy showers and brief thunder but the is expected to be much more pleasant.

From 9am onwards, the sun will be down on the city.

Temperatures will not be quite as high as Tuesday however, which saw the mercury soar to highs of 29°C.

A forecaster for the Met Office said: "A dry day although rather cloudy at first, but with some good sunny spells developing for the afternoon to give very warm sunshine, especially in the south of the area. Maximum temperature 26 °C."

The rest of the week is expected to follow the same pattern as the last two days.

The Met Office added: "Hot and sunny on Thursday with a risk of some thunderstorms overnight.

"Fresher on Friday with sunny spells and some showers.

"Cloudier with more frequent, occasionally thundery, showers on Saturday."
