Liverpool weather forecast as Met Office predicts 70mph winds and hours of rainfall

Heavy rain has hit parts of Merseyside today as Storm Aiden continues to gather pace.

The UK is set for winds of up to 70mph and hours of rainfall because of the storm, with the Met Office predicting the worst of the weather will affect the North West.

There will be heavy showers and a risk of "potentially severe" gales at times.

In Liverpool today, cloudy and heavy rainfall will dominate the majority of the day, with a 90% chance of rain until 5pm. The rain is due ease for a few hours before it is expected to fall again from 9pm.

The rain will be heavy and persistent at times, moving east across the region through the day while strong and gusty winds will remain before calming in the afternoon. The maximum temperature will be 14°C.

Flood alerts are currently in force for England.

On October 1, Liverpool is expected to be dry with some sunny spells and light winds.

Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said the weather "could provide some fireworks" by the end of the week, as a powerful jet stream sweeps across the country.

Mr Petagna said "a deep area of low pressure is likely" which would provide the perfect scenario for some "very wet and windy conditions."

The Met Office predicts a potential change in the weather around the middle of October.

Although more rain and strong winds are expected at times, spells of drier and fine weather are also forecast and could become more widespread.
