Liverpool weather: Cloudy days expected before sweltering heat next week

People may be able to get the barbecues out as temperature look set to hit high 20C over the coming days.

It has been a cold start to the week in many areas, including Merseyside, with rain and drizzle and a chilly breeze. However due to a high pressure system coming from the south it's about to get a lot warmer.

Today will be mainly cloudy with some sunny spells later in the afternoon. There will be a maximum temperature of 20C, with it feeling warm in the sunshine.

Cloud will thicken in the evening bringing the chance of the odd spot of rain, mainly over hills, overnight. It will be much of the same on Thursday, but on Friday the weather will take a turn.

Into the weekend, the Met Office reports that the cloud will begin to break up, with more sunny spells expected. Forecasters say that temperatures will then hit 30C in the south and high 20C in the north.

BBC weather forecaster Susan Powell said: "We have some warmer weather to come for the UK in the days ahead, notably warmer for England and Wales. It was a pretty chilly start to Tuesday, it is going to be a much milder start to Wednesday.

"We start as we mean to go on … an area of high pressure all the way from the Azores, so through the night we are actually going to be pulling in mild air all the while on a north westerly breeze behind a warm weather front.

"And that weather front will bring some quite heavy rain for a time for Scotland and then some persistent but lighter rain sets in across western Scotland during the day on Wednesday, perhaps just fringing into northern parts of England as well.

"Northern Ireland hopefully brightening up as the day goes on, best of the sunshine will be across England and Wales but 20C in Aberdeen is up on the highs that we saw earlier in the week and I think we will see 24C or 25C in the south east of England."
