Liverpool warning hints at brilliant Newcastle mentality as first Premier League target revealed

Callum Wilson has warned Liverpool will 'regenerate' during the World Cup break as the Newcastle United star set his side the target of hitting 40 points before they start dreaming of Europe.

Newcastle are flying in fourth place following a superb start to the season. The in-form Magpies have won five of their last six games and have have only tasted defeat once this season, at Anfield, back in August. Newcastle are currently eight points clear of Liverpool in the table and even Reds boss Jurgen Klopp admitted last week that 'you cannot qualify for the Champions League if you play as inconsistent as we do at the moment'.

During the latest episode of the Footballer's Football podcast, presenter Rickie Haywood-Williams, a Liverpool fan, said to Wilson that it looked like 'you lot are taking our place in the top four'. However, Wilson, a senior figure in the Newcastle dressing room, is certainly not getting carried away, which bodes well for the Magpies as a whole as players and staff stay calm and block out the noise.

"We're only 13 games in so we're still early on in the season and I think the break will probably help Liverpool regenerate, recharge, and they're going to be in and around the top four, aren't they?" he said.

"Let's be serious. They're not going to have this dip for long. Man United were down near the relegation zone probably four or five weeks ago or something like that. All of a sudden, now, they're in the top six so people get carried away with, 'Newcastle. We're doing well'.

"Yeah, we're doing well but I just want us to get safe because the last few seasons I've been thinking about relegation battles so it's nice to be in the top end of the league at the minute, but we've still not at 40 points yet. When we get there, I'll start chatting about, 'Yeah, actually, maybe we will start climbing up'. Once you get to that point, you know, 'All right. Where can we finish this season?'"
