Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has suggested that the longer Mohamed Salah goes without signing a new contract at Liverpool, it could present an opportunity for Manchester City to sign him.
Salah, who scored a sensational solo goal in Liverpool's 2-2 draw with City at Anfield on Sunday, is out-of-contract on Merseyside in the summer of 2023 and some Liverpool supporters are beginning to get itchy feet about the fact he has not yet signed a new deal.
The Egyptian has gone from strength to strength since joining Liverpool from Roma in the summer of 2017, cementing himself as one of the greatest players on the planet.
Salah has been in sensational form so far this season, scoring nine goals in his first nine appearances in all competitions, with six of them coming in the Premier League.
With Salah continuing to get better and better, his contract situation is bound to put several elite-level clubs on alert. Although City have not been linked with the winger, who has now scored more than 100 Premier League goals, Campbell believes City's financial capabilities could give them a chance of tempting the former Chelsea man to swap Anfield for the Etihad Stadium if he wanted to.
"It may sound crazy but it’s a definite risk for Liverpool," Campbell told Football Insider.
"When you have a player who is doing what Mohamed Salah is doing, normally there are no questions about tying him up.
"Normally there are no questions about tying him up because that is a priority for the team.
"I don’t know what‘s going on inside Liverpool, but I know Salah is outplaying his present contract. 100 per cent he is.
"Whoever is dealing with the negotiations has a problem. Another club like Man City could probably double Mohamed Salah’s money. That is the problem Liverpool have.
"They work within a structure but that structure is going to get blown up because Salah is playing that well. This is the type of player he is.
"It would be crazy to lose him over this. They cannot allow it to leave, but we have seen it before. It would not be the first time.
"The finances are football are so important but with a player like Salah, you have to break the bank."
