Florian Wirtz scored his first Liverpool goal as the Reds held on to beat Wolves 2-1 at Anfield on Saturday. Following tributes to Diogo Jota in the first match between the Portuguese’s two former club’s since his passing, Ryan Gravenberch broke the deadlock shortly before half-time after the Old Gold stood up well to their hosts’ early forays forward.
Some 90 seconds later, Wirtz - finding the back of the net for the first time in a competitive match since his arrival on Merseyside - prodded home past Jose Sa after collecting a through ball from the in-form Hugo Ekitike, sending Liverpool into the break with what looked to be a comfortable advantage.
Not long after the restart, though, the visitors pulled one back through Santiago Bueno following a corner, and as the match ticked on it was Rob Edwards’ crew who looked the likelier of the two sides to find a goal in the second half. But in the end, Wirtz’s effort proved to be the difference maker as Arne Slot’s men ended 2025 on a high, with Wolves remaining winless at the bottom of the Premier League table. Liverpool 0-0 Wolves
15:14 , Alex Dakers13mins: Ouch - Federico Chiesa catches Wolves strikes Tolu Arokodare on the chin with a careless elbow, and the visitors’ forward stays down for a minute.
He’s being checked for a head injury by the medical staff, with play halted.
Liverpool 0-0 Wolves
15:11 , Alex Dakers11mins: HITS THE POST!
Hugo Ekitike is found by a great pass from Wirtz, and the in-form Frenchman tries to curl it into the far corner but the ball comes back off the woodwork.

Around the grounds
14:50 , Alex DakersAction from this weekend's round of fixtures in the Premier League began last night with a win for Manchester United against Newcastle.
There has been one result from today's games with four other 3pm GMT kick-offs, followed by an evening game:
(Yesterday) Manchester United 1-0 Newcastle
(12.30pm) Nottingham Forest 1-2 Man City
Brentford vs Bournemouth
Burnley vs Everton
West Ham vs Fulham
(5.30pm) Chelsea vs Aston Villa
Today's match officials
14:45 , Alex DakersFor those of you who may be interested, here are today’s match officials...
Referee: Simon Hooper
Assistants: Adrian Holmes, Simon Long
Fourth official: Adam Herczeg
VAR: Michael Salisbury
Assistant VAR: James Mainwaring
Hooper has refereed two of Liverpool’s league games this season: the 3-2 win at Newcastle in August, and more recently the 3-2 loss at Brenford in October.
Mane (not that one) makes full Premier League debut at Anfield
14:41 , Alex DakersA forward called Mane will take to the pitch at Anfield today... but it isn’t former Liverpool man Sadio.
Rather, this afternoon marks a first Premier League start for Wolves youngster Mateus Mane.
The 18-year-old, Portugal-born England youth international has made six substitute appearances in the Old Gold’s last seven league games, and registered an assist against league leaders Arsenal a few weeks ago.
Now, Rob Edwards has given him his chance as Wolves seek a first win of the campaign - or at the very least a rare point on the road.
He’ll most likely be starting on the wing, given Tolu Arokodare is also in today’s XI at the expense of usual centre forward Jorgen Strand Larsen, unless Edwards chooses to swap his usual 4-3-3 for a front two.

Liverpool youngsters who could save club millions in 2026 transfer market
14:35 , Alex DakersArne Slot has not been able to hand out as many opportunities as he perhaps would have liked to Liverpool’s academy players this season.
A downturn in results has meant the Reds boss has been careful to shield the club’s youngsters from criticism.
However, with Liverpool seemingly having turned a corner and also looking light depth-wise in a few areas, the new year could present fresh opportunities.
Standard Sport has taken a look at three Liverpool youngsters to keep an eye on in 2026 - all of whom could play a role at Anfield today!
Countdown to kick-off

Van Dijk: 'Let's finish the year on a high'
14:16 , Alex DakersLiverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has acknowledged that his crew still has plenty to improve upon despite coming into this game on a three-match win streak in all competitions.
Writing in his pre-match notes, the Dutch centre-back said: "We come into this game off the back of an important win at Tottenham last weekend, but we accept that even in victory, there were clear areas for improvement in terms of our performance level.
"We did a lot of things well down in north London, but we know that the last 10 or 15 minutes were far from our best, and we have to keep working hard each and every day to improve, because in the Premier League, sloppiness is punished more often than not.
"That said, we are all looking forward to getting out there this afternoon, and I know we can bank on your fantastic support as ever.
"Let's finish the year on a high."

Two changes for Liverpool: Frimpong and Chiesa start
14:04 , Alex DakersAs for Liverpool, there are two changes to the side that started last weekend’s win at Spurs: Frimpong in for the benched Bradley, and Chiesa in for the suspended Szoboszlai.
How exactly the Reds line up remains to be seen.

Chiesa - making his first Premier League start of the campaign - could slot into the right wing of a 4-2-3-1, as we’ve suggested in our confirmed team news post below, with Wirtz on the left and Mac Allister as the No10 behind line-leader Ekitike.
Or, there’s a chance Arne Slot could elect to field Chiesa up top alongside Ekitike, in which case Liverpool’s formation may be more of a 4-4-2 diamond with Wirtz slightly more central.

Four changes for Wolves: Two at each end
14:00 , Alex DakersThat’s four changes for Wolves, then, compared to the team that was defeated 2-0 by Brentford last time out.
In come Arokodare, Mane, Hugo Bueno and Mosquera for Strand Larsen, Lopez, Wolfe and Hoever.
Those changes were largely expected in our predicted line-ups earlier this afternoon, with Strand Larsen’s goal-scoring woes up top meaning Arokodare is given a chance to lead the line from the start.
Teenaged forward Mateus Mane, meanwhile, will most likely take up the right wing position vacated by Lopez - unless Hwang Hee-chan shifts to the opposite flank - as he makes his first Premier League start, while Bueno returns at left wing-back and Mosquera steps into the back three.

Fans paying tribute to Jota
13:35 , Alex DakersToday’s match is, of course, the first between these two sides since the passing of Liverpool player and former Wolves forward Diogo Jota.
A special tribute is believed to have been planned, including Jota‘s sons Dinis and Duarte joining the mascots at Anfield.
Fans of both clubs have been pictured paying tribute to the Portuguese - who died in a car accident alongside his brother, Andre Silva, over the summer - ahead of kick-off.

Team news on the way...
13:30 , Alex DakersWe expect to have confirmed team news for you all in 15 minutes.
Until then, you can check out our predicted line-ups a few posts down!
Slot issues rallying cry as Isak injury compounds selection headache
13:26 , Alex DakersArne Slot has issued a rallying cry to his Liverpool squad, calling on his players to “roll their sleeves up” amid mounting injuries.
Speaking ahead of today’s match, the Dutchman said those players he has available must get their heads down and focus on the task at hand.
“It is time for the players we do have available to do what they have done so many times and roll their sleeves up,” he told reporters.
“Not only our players but our fans as well. The players who are available need to give everything they have.”
While Isak is set for an extended spell on the side-lines, Slot has previously suggested Liverpool will not be spending heavily in the January transfer window.

Wolves predicted line-up: Frontline refresh?
13:18 , Alex DakersWith centre-back Toti Gomes reportedly set to be out for a “significant” period of time, Yerson Mosquera could step into the Wolves backline on his return from suspension.
Hugo Bueno was back in training as of Tuesday, but David Moller Wolfe could deputise at left wing-back if the Spaniard isn’t quite ready to start.
Jorgen Strand Larsen’s goal-scoring struggles continue up top, meaning Tolu Arokodare or teenager Mateus Mane could challenge for his starting spot.
Predicted Wolves XI (3-4-3): Johnstone; Mosquera, S. Bueno, Krejci; Doherty, J. Gomes, Andre, Moller Wolfe; F. Lopez, Strand Larsen, Hee-chan

Liverpool predicted line-up: Chiesa to start?
13:11 , Alex DakersFederico Chiesa is pushing for a rare start today at Anfield.
With Salah at AFCON and Gakpo’s fitness still in question, the Italian could make his first Premier League starting XI of the season.
Slot has allayed injury concerns around Wirtz, having already Isak to a leg break, but Szoboszlai’s suspension has certainly left Liverpool looking light up top.
At the back, meanwhile, doubts around Konate’s fitness could force Andrew Robertson to fill-in at centre-back given Leoni and Gomez are both side-lined.
Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones are expected to be among the five starters behind Ekitike, while Jeremie Frimpong - having returned from a two-month absence as a second-half substitute in the Spurs win last time out - could start at right-back with Bradley a fitness doubt.
Predicted Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenbech, Jones; Chiesa, Mac Allister, Wirtz; Ekitike

Wolves have not beaten their Anfield hosts since a 2-1 win in the FA Cup in January 2017, and have failed to take three points from this fixture in the Premier League since December 2010.
Liverpool wins: 63

Liverpool vs Wolves prediction
12:55 , Alex DakersThis should be pretty easy to call, regardless of Liverpool’s injuries and much-discussed struggles at times this season.
The Reds are in form, Wolves are not. Hugo Ekitike has proved that he can shoulder the goalscoring burden, and now, he doesn’t have Isak competing for his position.
With Chelsea playing Aston Villa on the same day, this could be a real opportunity for the Reds to crash the top four.
Liverpool to win, 4-0.

Wolves early team news: Bellegarde and Munetsi among absentees
12:52 , Alex DakersWolves are also missing a host of players.
Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Marshall Munetsi are perhaps their biggest misses, while Rodrigo Gomes and Toti will also not make the trip to Merseyside.
Emmanuel Agbadou is at AFCON, while Yerson Mosquera is suspended.
Left-back Hugo Bueno faces a late fitness test on a groin injury.

Liverpool early team news: Threadbare attack the main issue
12:45 , Alex DakersLiverpool are dealing with several injury absentees, while Mohamed Salah is away at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Dominik Szoboszlai is suspended, Cody Gakpo is rated as “50-50” to be fit having sat out the last couple of games with a knock, and we’ve learned that Alexander Isak’s leg break will keep the club’s record signing sidelined for a matter of months.
Elsewhere, Florian Wirtz is believed to be fit after an injury scare but Conor Bradley faces a late fitness test.
Joe Gomez and Wataru Endo are longer-term absentees alongside Giovanni Leoni, while centre-back Ibrahima Konate was reportedly missing from training earlier this week.
