Liverpool vs Sunderland: Prediction, kick-off time, team news, TV, live stream, h2h results, odds today

Liverpool host Sunderland tonight in what promises to be an emotional Premier League fixture.

While the Reds will go in search of victory to back up their 2-0 win over West Ham at the weekend, the match falls a day before Diogo Jota would have turned 29.

Jota, and his brother Andre Silva, sadly passed away after a car crash in July and the impact of his loss is still being felt by the Liverpool squad, as recently highlighted by Andy Robertson.

Liverpool supporters have sung Jota’s song in the 20th minute of every match this season and the tribute will certainly carry more weight against the Black Cats considering the circumstances.

Sunderland, meanwhile, staged a stunning comeback against Bournemouth at the weekend to sit two places and one point ahead of the Reds in the Premier League table.

Here’s everything you need to know about the game…

Liverpool vs Sunderland team news

Arne Slot has a big decision to make on whether to change a winning formula. Joe Gomez got the nod at right-back against West Ham which made Liverpool more resolute defensively.

Slot did recently reveal that Gomez had an injection on a knee problem, so it remains to be seen if the versatile defender can start two matches in a short space of time.

Mohamed Salah did not start at the London Stadium, though that was purely as a result of squad rotation amid a hectic fixture schedule.

The Egypt international could return here, while Milos Kerkez is fine despite being replaced by Robertson late on in the win over the Hammers.

As for Sunderland, Habib Diarra remains unavailable for selection after undergoing groin surgery.

Liverpool vs Sunderland prediction

Despite the win over West Ham, the jury is still out as to whether Liverpool are back or if it’s another false dawn.

Recent losses at home against Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven suggest Anfield is no longer the fortress it once was and that should give confidence to a Sunderland side that has already won at Stamford Bridge since returning to the top-flight.

However, we think Liverpool will just have enough to claim all three points.

Liverpool to win, 2-1.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

Sunderland’s long absence from the Premier League means this is the first meeting between the two sides since January 2017. Liverpool have not lost to the Black Cats since March 2012.
