Liverpool vs PSV LIVE: Champions League result, latest updates and reaction after another Anfield loss for Reds

Liverpool vs PSV LIVE!

Liverpool suffered their ninth loss in 12 games as PSV ran out 4-1 winners at Anfield in the Champions League on Wednesday. Peter Bosz’s side landed an early blow on their struggling hosts when Virgil van Dijk - believing he’d been fouled during a corner delivery - handled the ball in the area and Ivan Perisic dispatched the resulting penalty past Giorgi Mamardashvili, but the Reds equalised 10 minutes later as the in-form Dominik Szoboszlai calmly slotted home a rebound from Cody Gakpo’s saved shot.

Arne Slot’s men were level at half-time but fell behind again not long after the restart when Guus Til got the better of Milos Kerkez. Couhaib Driouech then came off the bench to score a brace, one a rebound and another a cool stoppage time effort, to pile more pressure on the group from Merseyside, who have now lost three games in a row and two straight at home.

This latest result also means the Reds fall out of the automatic qualification spots in the Champions League, putting their progression to the knock-out stages in jeopardy and worsening a season that has already been barrelling into “crisis” territory. H/T: Liverpool 1-1 PSV

All square at the break after an entertaining first half at Anfield.

Liverpool wanted a handball against Ivan Perisic right at the end, another decision which Virgil van Dijk again voices his discontent about when the referee says no.

The Reds’ skipper was right, in a sense, as the ball did appear to hit Perisic’s hand after leaving Mohamed Salah’s boot, but the PSV man’s arm wasn’t in an unnatural position and it looked to be outside the penalty box anyway.

Van Dijk may have to be careful not to show too much dissent when we resume play, given the early yellow he was shown.

16mins: And they find one!

The Reds move the ball quickly out to the left, Cody Gakpo’s shot is parried back out and Dominik Szoboszlai is perfectly placed to side foot the rebound into the back of the net.

That takes the Hungarian to eight goal involvements (three goals, five assists) in all competitions this season, level with Mohamed Salah as the most for Liverpool.

We are underway at Anfield.

Teams on the pitch

19:57 , Alex Dakers

Both teams are out on the Anfield pitch as the Champions League anthem rings out.

Not long to go now!

Liverpool's winning Champions League run - to continue, or come to an end?

19:57 , Alex Dakers

Liverpool have won each of their last 13 games at Anfield in the league or (formerly) group stage of the Champions League.

That’s both a record for a Premier League club and the longest ongoing run in Europe, trumping Arsenal (nine wins), Bayern Munich and Inter Milan (both on six wins).

They did of course lose to eventual winners Paris St-Germain in last season's quarter-finals, though, and PSV will view the Reds’ domestic struggles as a side of weakness that they could exploit to record their first win in England since 2008.

19:53 , Alex Dakers

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk offered some strong words of reaction after his side’s latest home loss, to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, at the weekend.

The skipper will be expecting a response tonight.

Countdown to kick-off

Ten minutes until our scheduled kick-off time at Anfield!

PSV: Slot's bogey team

19:44 , Alex Dakers

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has won just one of his last eight games against PSV in all competitions (three draws, four losses), a run that includes a 3-2 defeat in Eindhoven during last season’s Champions League league phase.

Slot has suffered as many defeats against PSV in his managerial career (four - level with FC Twente and Vitesse) as he has against any other club.

Slot on Isak and Liverpool's right-back situation

19:41 , Alex Dakers

We can now bring you some quotes from Arne Slot, who has been speaking to broadcaster TNT Sports ahead of kick-off.

On the situation at right-back in the absence of Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong: "I can understand there is some doubt because [Szoboszlai and Jones] both can play there and as can Joe Gomez, but he's been struggling lately with a knee injury - but Curtis [Jones] will start there.

On benching Alexander Isak: "In the last four weeks, he played 30 minutes and then he played 70 minutes in a game [versus Nottingham Forest] that wasn't so intense.”

Line-up change: Szoboszlai back in midfield, Jones at right-back

19:38 , Alex Dakers

In another adjustment to his line-up, Arne Slot has confirmed that Curtis Jones will start at right-back for Liverpool tonight.

It means Dominik Szoboszlai returns to his preferred position in attacking midfield.

That’s something Reds fans have been calling for, with the versatile Hungarian one of their best players so far this season.

Warm-ups ongoing

19:32 , Alex Dakers

Both squads are in the building at Anfield and warming up as we speak.

Less than thirty minutes until kick-off!

Liverpool's set-piece weakness

19:24 , Alex Dakers

Liverpool manager Arne Slot this week highlighted his side’s weakness at defending set plays this season, after Nottingham Forest scored their opener following a corner at the weekend.

In total, the Dutchman said, the defending Premier League champions have conceded nine goals from set pieces.

You’d think targeting that weakness will therefore be part of PSV boss Peter Bosz’s gameplan tonight.

Still, Liverpool have plenty of aerial threats at the other end, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate both scoring headers from corners in the Champions League.

PSV name Perisic in unchanged starting XI

19:13 , Alex Dakers

As for PSV, former Tottenham winger Ivan Perisic starts this evening despite some pre-match doubts surrounding his fitness.

Ricardo Pepi, who provided the matchwinner when these two sides last met, is on the bench.

All in all, it’s the same XI that Peter Bosz fielded for his side’s 1-0 win at NAC Breda on Saturday and indeed that the PSV has named for six successive matches now.

No need to change what isn’t broken!

Two Liverpool changes as Alisson misses out, Isak benched

19:00 , Alex Dakers

Those two Liverpool changes, as some of you may have already figured out, are Giorgi Mamardashvili in for Alisson Becker and Hugo Ekitike instead of Alexander Isak.

(Liverpool FC via Getty Images)

Alisson was recalled to the starting XI at Anfield on Saturday following a period on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. However, it’s reportedly an illness that keeps the Brazilian from making the matchday squad tonight.

Isak, meanwhile, had little effect on the game against Nottingham Forest and was replaced just after the hour mark in that game. The Reds’ club record signing must now settle for a place among the substitutes tonight, with fellow summer arrival Ekitike - who has enjoyed a comparatively better start to life on Merseyside - leading the line instead.

Three wins from four matches for the Reds in this competition, including a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in their last home outing, have provided some respite from a dire domestic campaign in which Liverpool have lost six of their last seven Premier League fixtures.

PSV, meanwhile, are unbeaten in all competitions since a 3-1 home defeat to Union SG in September.

Top of the Eredivisie with a six-point advantage over Slot’s former club Feyenoord, they’ve won their last seven league games and in this competition have claimed draws at Bayer Leverkusen and Olympiacos either side of an eye-catching 6-2 home victory over Serie A champions Napoli.

PSV's Bosz: Wirtz the biggest talent I have ever seen

18:23 , George Flood

Florian Wirtz may be missing out for Liverpool again tonight due to injury, but the German star has still received the backing of Peter Bosz.

The PSV boss formerly coached Wirtz at Bayer Leverkusen and described him as the biggest talent he had ever seen who will make the grade at Anfield after his initial struggles following that blockbuster £116m summer transfer.

"He was 16 when he joined us. He was for the under-19 squad. They brought him in from Koln," Bosz told TNT Sports this week.

"I remember it was Corona [COVID-19 pandemic] and I asked my sporting director, ‘how is the young kid doing?’ and he said ‘well, he’s doing really well’. I said ‘let him train with us’.

“He trained with us and I never let him go.

"This was, for me, the biggest talent I have ever seen. I’ve worked around with some really good talents but what I saw with him was incredible.

“Technically, perfect. Very intelligent. Good mentality.

"I played him as a right winger in the beginning but he did so good that I put him in his position, the 10 position, and never changed it.

"Those players, they always find the solutions what they have to do, where they have to progress and how to protect themselves and be able to play in the Premier League so I’m confident he will succeed."

Slot: Liverpool have not lost ability to fight

18:07 , George Flood

Does Arne Slot believe that Liverpool have lost the ability to fight amid their nightmare domestic run?

"No, no we haven't,” he said at his pre-PSV press conference on Tuesday. “But in moments of games we have lost too many duels.

"I think the last game we played we had 75 per cent possession, which means you only have to defend 25 per cent of the time and I think in and around our box we only had to defend four times.

"If I have to defend for half-an-hour I am in defend mode, so I just to throw myself at every ball, but when our defenders and maybe even including the goalkeeper are thinking about ball possession and then in the moment they have to defend we are not as switched on as we should be."

Slot: Liverpool struggles are 'ridiculous'

17:50 , George Flood

A candid Arne Slot said yesterday that Liverpool’s current situation was “ridiculous” and “unbelievable”.

He said he takes the responsibility for their results and performances, but insists they are working tirelessly to put things right.

"Ridiculous, almost,” he said. “Something I didn't expect to be in, not at any club I worked at let alone if you are manager of Liverpool.

"That is unbelievable. It is unexpected for the club, for me, for everyone, but if you ever needed to face this maybe this is the best club to face it because the harder it gets the more we are together, the more we are trying to do the things Liverpool usually achieves.

"These situations, it's not really nice is it? I can tell you that. To be honest, I didn't expect myself to be in this situation with the way we go about it tactically and the quality of players we have.

"You would never have expected us to have lost so much. For sure I take the responsibility and feel guilty for it. We're busy working on it.”

Liverpool vs PSV prediction

17:39 , George Flood

A win tonight would do preciously little to calm the major concerns over Liverpool’s dire and shocking league form, which captain Virgil van Dijk conceded this week had been a “mess” in another scathing assessment.

The abysmal home loss to a Nottingham Forest team already on their third manager of the season looking to escape the relegation zone was the worst of the lot, with the Reds looking totally and utterly devoid of any sort of confidence, cohesion or organisation.

Blip in Istanbul aside, the Champions League has been a welcome distraction for Liverpool so far this season and needs to remain the case on Wednesday, though PSV are certainly no pushovers - as Napoli found out to their cost not so long ago.

Dominant domestically, their performances in Europe so far have been rather inconsistent, though a positive result on Merseyside certainly isn’t beyond them.

However, we’re backing a Liverpool team no doubt showing a number of changes to produce a quick reaction from their weekend debacle.

Liverpool to win, 3-1.

PSV team news: Plea and Van Bommel out

17:39 , George Flood

PSV boss Peter Bosz remains without French forward Alassane Plea, who is not expected to return for a while yet after a serious knee injury sustained back in August.

Young winger Ruben van Bommel, son of former Netherlands midfielder Mark van Bommel, looks set to miss the rest of the season with his own knee injury suffered against rivals Ajax last month.

Otherwise PSV look to have a clean bill of health for tonight's trip to Anfield.

Liverpool team news: Still no Wirtz

17:36 , George Flood

Liverpool remain without £116million summer signing Florian Wirtz, who did not train yesterday having not featured against Nottingham Forest at the weekend due to a knock suffered on international duty with Germany.

The Reds are seriously short on right-backs, with Conor Bradley also out and Jeremie Frimpong still nursing a hamstring injury.

Arne Slot also revealed at his pre-match press conference yesterday that Joe Gomez received an injection in his knee last week and, while still available for selection, is not able to train fully.

Liverpool did at least get a boost on Saturday with the return of first-choice goalkeeper Alisson following nearly two months on the sidelines with his own hamstring complaint.

Liverpool vs PSV live

17:31 , George Flood

Good evening and welcome to Standard Sport's live coverage of Liverpool vs PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.

The reeling Reds will be hoping to secure more respite in Europe tonight after Saturday's dismal 3-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest made it six defeats from their last seven games in the Premier League, where they slumped down to 11th place as the pressure continued to build on Arne Slot just six months after their title success and despite a record-breaking summer transfer spend.

Defeat to Galatasaray aside, Liverpool have been much better in the Champions League so far this season, toppling Real Madrid earlier this month on another famous Anfield night having previously hit five goals in Frankfurt and also got the better of Atletico Madrid on home soil.

Looking to take advantage of their current crisis is a PSV side who currently sit six points clear at the Eredivisie summit and have already shown their capabilities in this competition by scoring six against Serie A champions Napoli, though also lost to debutants Union Saint-Gilloise.

Kick-off on Merseyside is at 8pm GMT, so stay tuned for all the latest match build-up, team news and live game updates.
