After making it to last season’s final, where they lost to Real Madrid, Jurgen Klopp and his men will be looking to go one better this time around.
They face a PSG side that has struggled to live up to hype in recent years, having repeatedly fallen short on Europe’s biggest stage. Will this season be any different for the French giants?
Follow all the action from this evening’s clash below:
That is all for us tonight. The Champions League is back with a bang, and I reckon these staggered kick-off times might just stick. Late drama in the early game, late drama in the later game - a whole evening of action-filled football.
Be sure to follow all the fallout with The Independent, particularly with Miguel Delaney and Simon Hughes who witnessed that late drama at Anfield first-hand.
I've been Harry Latham-Coyle - thank you for joining me.
A huge win for Liverpool, that. They started the game well and took a deserved lead through Daniel Sturridge. James Milner's penalty extended their advantage, but Thomas Meunier's well-taken volley gave PSG hope just before half-time.
The French champions were ineffectual throughout and looked particularly inept in a second half where they had one sole effort on the Liverpool goal. That effort, however, proved telling, Kylian Mbappe capitalising on a Mohamed Salah error to fire home what looked to be a goal that secured PSG an away point.
But Firmino's late winner gave Liverpool all three points.
Off the bench with the winner! The corner is too deep and Firmino actually heads the ball straight to Kylian Mbappe, but he loses the ball poorly and the ball is worked back to the Brazilian on the right-hand side of the box.
He cuts inside onto his left, chops back onto his right and crisply strikes into the bottom corner to grab home victory for Liverpool.
And Mohamed Salah leaves the field with Liverpool now perhaps looking for a winner. He hasn't been at his best so far this season, and Xherdan Shaqiri comes on.
Sadio Mane is felled by Marquinhos just outside the box on the left. This is one that would suit Trent Alexander-Arnold and the full-back looks the favourite to take it...
A poor giveaway by Mohamed Salah in his own half, an ill-advised square ball into Julian Draxler's path. PSG get a couple of fortunate ricochets and the ball rolls to Mbappe's feet just inside the box, the teenager very calmly knocking the ball firmly past Alisson. 2-2.
