Liverpool vs Norwich City second half kick-off delayed due to communication breakdown

It is unlikely Norwich City players really wanted to come out for the second half of their Premier League opener against Liverpool - and the agony was prolonged even further due to a communication problem between the officials.

Liverpool scored four goals in a blistering start to the new season, with Mohamed Salah, Divock Origi and Virgil van Dijk all finding the net as Norwich's hopes for the 2019-20 campaign were immediately brought crashing back down to earth.

And their night was made even longer as a technological issue caused a delay to the second 45 minutes with a communication breakdown between the officials.

Sky Sports initially reported that the problem was linked the the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, with assistant referee Sam Bennett having an issue with his microphone system, with the official needing new equipment.

It is believed that his equipment pack was causing problems, leading to the officials only hearing static in their headsets.

With the Anfield crowd becoming restless due to the delay, the issue was soon rectified and referee Michael Oliver was able to restart play for the second half - though whether Norwich actually wanted the game to start again is another matter.

The Premier League later clarified that the issue was not down to VAR, writing in a tweet: "There was a slight delay to the restart as the officials' headsets were repaired - this issue was unrelated to VAR".
