Liverpool vs Newcastle team news: Sean Longstaff and Andy Carroll both out of Premier League clash

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff is out of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Liverpool after damaging an ankle in training.

The 21-year-old, who made his league debut for the Magpies at Anfield on Boxing Day last year, is still being assessed, but will not travel this weekend.

Head coach Steve Bruce said: “Unfortunately, Sean Longstaff turned an ankle yesterday in training, he won’t make tomorrow.

“He tried to block a cross and unfortunately twisted his ankle. We’ll not know how severe that is until the next couple of days, but that’s a bit of a blow to us.”

Bruce also revealed striker Andy Carroll, who is yet to play since his deadline day return to his first club, is to see a specialist as he works his way back from ankle surgery, while Allan Saint-Maximin is continuing his recovery after aggravating a hamstring problem.

He said: “Andy is away to see a specialist this afternoon. Touch wood, he is delighted with how it’s gone so far, so it’s good news for us.

“Saint-Maximin, we’re just bordering on the side of caution after what happened the last time with him, so another 10 days’ training before we play Brighton next week, hopefully he’ll be in contention for them.”
