Manchester United handed under-fire boss Ruben Amorim one of the finest results of his tenure as they fought to a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Premier League’s late Sunday kick-off.
United got off to a dream start as Amad slid in Bryan Mbeumo to open the scoring within two minutes at Anfield, and though a shocked Liverpool began to dominate possession the visitors continued to threaten on the counter.
Cody Gakpo was at the centre of the Reds’ attacking effort as he hit the post twice in the first half, though United went into the break in the lead with Bruno Fernandes also hitting the woodwork.
The second half continued in a similar vein, with Gakpo hitting the post again early on, before a raft of attacking changes from Arne Slot put Liverpool further onto the front foot.
And the subs soon paid off as Gakpo finally equalised from Federico Chiesa’s cross, but just when it looked like the hosts would press on for a winner, it was Harry Maguire who popped up with a header at the back post to win it for United late on.

Contrasting fortunes for Liverpool and Man Utd might become sliding doors moment of Ruben Amorim’s reign
07:00 , Chris WilsonRuben Amorim will always have Anfield. A reign that has brought many a historic low finally has the right kind of landmark result. As Manchester United belatedly recorded back-to-back league wins for the first time under the Portuguese, they triumphed on Liverpool’s home turf for the first time in almost a decade. Louis van Gaal, the previous United manager to take three points here, was sacked four months later, so this is no guarantee that Amorim will get three years, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants, but both the result and the manner of it felt genuinely auspicious.
And so it was Arne Slot who was left to contemplate a slump of unexpectedly seismic proportions and who was swathed in unflattering statistics. This is the first Liverpool side since 2014 to lose four matches in a row which is not a good look for a team who underwent a £450m makeover. They were beaten at Anfield in the Premier League for the first time in 13 months. Late goals have been a story of Liverpool’s season, but now they rue them. They have started to concede early on, too. They did both: behind after 62 seconds to Bryan Mbeumo, they were beaten by Harry Maguire’s 84th-minute decider.

Roy Keane questions Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool losing streak goes on
06:00 , Chris WilsonSky Sports pundit Roy Keane has urged Virgil van Dijk to look at “the man in the mirror” as he questioned the Dutchman’s role in Liverpool’s recent poor run of form after the champions slipped to a 2-1 loss to Manchester United.
Van Dijk was partly at fault for conceding the opener within the first couple of minutes at Anfield, and though the hosts rallied and put plenty of pressure on United, the visitors eventually came away with a first away win there since 2016.
The Liverpool captain pointed out that his side “were far too rushed” and “conceded a very sloppy second goal”, adding that “there was plenty of football left to be played [and score] and we didn't”.

How Ange Postecoglou surpassed Liz Truss in 39-day Nottingham Forest disaster
04:00 , Chris WilsonSome more of the biggest football news this weekend...
The term hubris emerged in Greece and there was some distinctly hubristic about it, even if it was less Greek tragedy than a farce that stemmed from a pair of men born in Greece and briefly paired in Nottingham.
Perhaps Ange Postecoglou’s heritage was a factor in his appointment at Nottingham Forest. Many another realised immediately it was a stylistic mismatch between manager and squad. Evangelos Marinakis, whose choice of Nuno Espirito Santo as Forest’s previous manager met with a distinctly mixed reception but proved inspired, parachuted in a compatriot of sorts after one of the strangest sackings and then, 39 days later, delivered one that was both among the most predictable and brutal.
Postecoglou lasted a mere 39 days at Forest. It was the shortest ever reign of any supposedly permanent manager in the Premier League; some caretakers have lasted longer. His tenure was shorter than Forest’s iconic manager Brian Clough’s infamously brief spell at Leeds in 1974; shorter, indeed, than the time Liz Truss spent as Prime Minister, when she was outlasted by a lettuce. Next summer’s World Cup will be longer than the Postecoglou era, if such a word can be deployed. Clough’s 6,700-day spell at Forest was more than 171 times longer than the Postecoglou age, if such a term can be used.

Erling Haaland is inevitable — but Manchester City’s over-reliance on striker is unhealthy
02:00 , Chris WilsonThere report from the City result this weekend too...
For Manchester City’s second highest scorer this season, Saturday brought a 2-0 win to enjoy. Not a City victory, admittedly, because he can scarcely savour a status as Erling Haaland’s closest challenger. But, more than two months into the campaign, only the Norwegian has scored more goals for City than Maxime Esteve. Who, rather than participating in City’s defeat of Everton, helped Burnley keep a clean sheet as they beat Leeds.
In all competitions, Phil Foden has also struck twice for City. In the Premier League, no one has. Esteve’s two own goals came in Burnley’s 5-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium. Since the French defender’s inadvertent second, City have found the net seven times. The scorers? Haaland, Haaland, Haaland, Haaland, Haaland, Haaland and Haaland.
No wonder, then, that Pep Guardiola diagnosed an acute case of Haaland-dependencia. “As a team we have to understand we can't rely completely on him,” he said. “He's always there, but we need the other guys, the wingers and attacking midfielders. They need to score goals, otherwise we will not achieve what we're trying to do.”

Tottenham’s home woes continue as Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia fire Aston Villa to victory
00:00 , Chris WilsonMorgan Rogers' first goal for Aston Villa in 20 matches inspired a fifth-consecutive win and piled more home woe on Tottenham as they suffered a 2-1 Premier League defeat.
Rogers had shone for England during the international break, but failed to score in club football since the start of April, but changed that at Spurs with a sensational 37th-minute leveller.
It cancelled out Rodrigo Bentancur's fifth-minute opener for Thomas Frank's side and as Tottenham pushed for a rare home victory in the league in 2025, they were hit with a sucker-punch as Emiliano Buendia's curler, 13 minutes from time sealed the comeback for Villa.

Who should Liverpool build the team around?
22:20 , Chris Wilson"Liverpool have got two away games – in the Champions League at Frankfurt and then they go to Brentford. I don’t think Salah should start both of those games,” says Carragher.
"He should always start at Anfield because Liverpool will be on top, around the edge of the box and more often than not he scores in those situations today. But I do think in the away games and helping your full-back, I don’t think Salah should be starting every game right now, certainly away from home, with the form he’s in.”
Asked whether Salah would be okay not starting, Carragher adds: “Probably not. But when you get to a certain age you have to understand that, especially when you’re not playing well where’s your argument.
“It’s different if you’re banging in the goals and your manager makes a tactical decision and you’re frustrated. I don’t think Mo Salah’s in any position to complain if he was left out of one of the next two away games,” he added.
Who should Liverpool build the team around?
22:00 , Chris WilsonJamie Carragher claims that Liverpool will have to build the side around Isak and Wirtz “because they’ve spent the money on them, and their age profile compared to Salah”.
"I do think watching Mo Salah this season – I love him but...
"There’s a tactical set-up with Salah that he doesn’t help Liverpool’s right back. I’m not criticising him for being lazy and not getting back. We lauded Arne Slot for allowing Salah that role last season. He probably hasn’t got the legs to get up and down like a conventional wide player. But if you’re not getting anything going the other way…
"Watching Salah today, he never got found out defensively because he doesn’t track back but he was off it with the ball. He lost the ball a lot through the game. That can happen with him, even in his prime.
"But what I’d say with Salah is right now I think we’re at the stage where I don’t think Salah should be like a Virgil van Dijk where it’s like ‘first name on the teamsheet,’” he added.
'We're not going to see the best of Liverpool'
21:45 , Chris Wilson"Liverpool felt invincible last season, now as soon as someone beat them they have lost four in a row.
"It's like Manchester City last season and you couldn't believe they were losing and it's the same with Liverpool now.
"They have got to get out of it quickly but we're not going to see the best of Liverpool until the second half of the season.
"With Liverpool sometimes there is a mindset of not wanting to do the dirty work."
Praise for United's recruitment
21:30 , Chris Wilson"We've talked about belief. Maybe Liverpool have lost some after four defeats, but back-to-back wins for United will certainly build some belief,” says Roy Keane.
"The players will go to the training ground this week and it will be a better place.
"There's some positivity around the place now but next they have a tricky game against Brighton coming up.
"There's still loads to fix. let's not kid ourselves that Man Utd are some top side now, they are far from it, but they now have a goal threat.
"That also eases the pressure on the players at the back. Two goals a game and that gives them a good chance of winning football matches.
"You have to praise United's recruitment this season. We know the importance of recruitment in football.
"We've slagged United off for years about it and we've asked who is buying the players.
"But the big plus this year is they have bought players who know the league in Cunha and Mbeumo. When you have a couple of star players up the pitch, it gives everyone a big lift,” he added.
Fernandes 'very pleased with this win'
21:15 , Chris Wilson"Obviously I will be smiling when I win games and I will be smiling less when I lose games. I am very, very happy and very pleased with this win,” says Fernandes to BBC Radio 5 Live.
"We know how difficult it is to win here at Anfield. It has been ten years since the last time the club won here, we have put that aside now, happy with that. I'm enjoying the moment but I am now already thinking of the next one because if you don't win the next one we are going to get back in the same feeling and moment we were in before.
"I didn't enjoy the second half much, We did not have much of the ball and I think we quit trying to play and have the ball because of their pressure. They are very good at doing that. They put more bodies up front and that makes it difficult for our centre backs to play out from the back. But, the resilience that we showed and the character to defend our box was impressive, but I know and I want our team to play better on the ball.
"I want the team to be confident and for every player to play their own game and have a good feeling to go into the pitch and help the team grow into the best shape that we can.
"We have a lot of talent in this team and a lot of good players sometimes it is difficult to show that when you are not winning. Winning two games now I hope we come with a lot more confidence for the next one. We need to have confidence and arrogant but at the same time with respect for who we are playing,” he added.

'It's not quite happening for Liverpool'
20:50 , Chris Wilson"Liverpool are still conceding goals and big chances,” says former Reds defender Jamie Carragher on Sky.
"I don't think there is one glaring problem, it's lots of things. The new signings are not up to speed but also some of Liverpool's great players from last season are nowhere near the level they were.
"They are making errors. It's not quite happening for Liverpool.
“It's a good time for Arne Slot to be measured after four defeats in a row. If Liverpool had taken their chances they probably win the game.
"However, the way the Premier League is style-wise, set pieces are big part of the game. Everyone is taking long throws and there are set pieces galore.
"Liverpool just can't seem to cope. We talk about the summer signings and integrating them into how Liverpool play, but has it affected them with set pieces? The full backs are quite small.
"There's no sort of great physical presence in there. Maybe it is hurting Liverpool, not just because of their football but also coping with set piece," he added.
More from Fernandes
20:40 , Chris WilsonFernandes has spoken to Sky on the result, beginning by explaining that “our shape always gives teams issues”.
“It is a little bit ungrateful to talk about shape when we lose games and in the same way I am grateful to talk about it when we win. We always believe in the system, whether we win or lose, but it's about doing the right things in the right moments.
"We had moments we had to suffer and we did that in the game and the main thing is to do the same thing and believe what we prepare is what is going to give us the win.
On back to back wins for the first time under Amorim, he explains: "It is not going to mean anything if next week we do not win the game. We know the demand of this club is very high and you have to win each game ahead.
"Everyone was worried about these back to back wins but we just have to focus on the next game. It is massive for us to win today to get closer in the table to not be far from where we want to be in the table,” he added.
'Utd have a couple of gems'
20:30 , Chris Wilson"What Sir Jim Ratcliffe said on Ruben Amorim was quite unprecedented. He almost got ridiculed for it to a certain extent,” explains Jamie Redknapp on Sky.
"But maybe it changed the whole dressing room.
"The players that maybe weren't quite keen on Amorim, maybe Ratcliffe's comments shut everyone up. He's here, so let's get on with it.
"Maybe it created a bit of togetherness.
"Also, they have signed a couple of gems in terms of Mbeumo and Cunha. They now have players that look like they deserve to be in a Man Utd shirt.
"They do now look, to a certain extent, a better team. They still need a few more pieces in that jigsaw but there are more positives now,” added the former Liverpool midfielder.
Maguire reacts
20:20 , Chris WilsonMaguire adds that “staying in the game when they scored that equaliser” was the key to eventually winning.
“Although they had a lot of pressure in the game in the second half and Gakpo hit the post, aside from that I don't think they made that many chances and we felt pretty comfortable. Then they open us up with a well-worked goal.
"We could have really sunk our heads and gone under in that moment but we got together, and that is the most pleasing thing. The crowd was right behind them, and our fans with what they have experienced in recent years must have been fearing the worst. To come back from that and score the winner was really important,” he added.

Man Utd’s victory at Anfield might be the turning point of Ruben Amorim’s reign
More from Maguire
20:05 , Chris WilsonOn securing back to back league wins for the first time under Amorim, Maguire adds: "It's embarrassing really. It's not a stat that we should even be speaking about because it is an embarrassing stat to have.
“Now that's out of the way let's try and make it three [wins] on Saturday against Brighton, because we have to start putting a bit more consistency together. The last three or four years we'd put in a performance like this and the following game we come down again. We have set a bench mark, there are a lot of areas we can do more, we were hanging on there and defending for the last 30 minutes or so.
"We'll analyse it. The manager strives for perfection so I'm sure he will want us to play better than we did in the second half. Great fight, big spirit, big win, but again we have to go again,” he added.
More from Maguire
20:00 , Chris WilsonMatch-winner Harry Maguire also spoke to BBC after the game, and he said the result has “been a long-time coming”.
“It's been a tough place for us over recent years. We know how big it is for our fans. We have the cliche of it being 'only three points' but it is more than three points that today.
"It's massive for our club, for our fans and it is a great memory they are going to have. The lads are buzzing and as cliche as it is we need to build on it now and make sure to take the confidence from it and take the fighting spirit.
"We can play better on the ball, of course we can, we were sloppy at times, but there were times where we played through them and created numerous chances, especially in the first half.
"The fight and the spirit has got to be with us every game and that is something we need to make sure we show that against Brighton next Saturday. I'm sure the fans will have a good night,” he adds.
Slot speaks on Salah's form
19:50 , Chris WilsonSalah has now gone seven matches without scoring a non-penalty goal for the first time in his career.
"After games like this, it's quite normal and usual that people are very focused on individual players. In the first five or six games it was about the signings we did, now it's about Mo Salah,” says Slot on the Egyptian.
"We had more than enough chances to score. Mo missed a big one. Some others missed a big chances. We are not used to this. We needed a goal, but we needed a player who could create something in that end phase. That's what Jeremie [Frimpong, who came on for Salah] did, he had a great action, crossed to Cody.
"If we had been 3-0 up, Cody would have scored. I cannot guarantee this. So every player has tried everything. But it didn't work out for us,” he added.

More from Slot
19:45 , Chris Wilson"We've had more than enough chances to score a goal when we didn't need that penalty. Yes or no. I don't want to talk about that. We had so many chances, we need to score more. And if you are 1-1 and the game is completely there for you and you have to defend one set piece, then we have to defend it better than we did.
"This is something we have to work on. And there's emotion in the game about decisions. Every manager has this. But I will not talk about this,” he explains.
On losing three times in similar circumstances, he says: "It happens three times in a row. We've made many offensive substitutions to turn the game around. In the end, we created a lot of chances throughout the whole game, but mainly after the subs were made.
"Maybe you don't have the same structure defending the set pieces when you start the game. But it's not about who does what, it's making sure you don't concede. Our mindset is maybe only on scoring, scoring, scoring because we deserved to win the game. And maybe we forget - or I don't know if we forget, but it comes across that way - these one or two single moments where we have to defend.
"Before that we created so many chances to score. Cody Gakpo twice off the post, Alexander Isak one-on-one with the goalkeeper. But if I look at the game back, maybe I forgot one or two chances.
"The second half we started off quite well. If you have so many good players on the bench, you better use them. Especially if they are attacking players.
"People might say: you've conceded one or two extra chances apart form the goal as well. Correct. That's what we have to do. If you're 1-0 down you have to take more risks than when you're 1-0 up. If I take that into account that every time we have to fight back and the chances we concede, I can't be too negative about that. Defending in a set piece at 1-1, it happened to us at Palace and again today, that is something we have to do,” he added as he finished.

' No excuses' for Liverpool
19:40 , Chris Wilson"If you play United - who come here with a low block and playing a lot of long balls and you know that is going to be difficult as it's not easy to play through them and you don't get the chance to win the ball high up - and you concede after one or two minutes, it makes it harder,” says Arne Slot as he reflects on the result.
"And if you would have told me before the game that we were able to play against the low block with the quality players United have, against a team who play so many long balls, would we be able to create so many chances? I would have said: I would take that immediately. And it normally doesn't lead to losing matches of football.
"But we did, because we missed a lot. The few chances we've conceded led to two goals conceded. It was again a set piece, it's partly the reason why we lose this game.
"If you lose a game of football, especially after you have lost four, maybe you should have the emotion in the game. But I should not talk about that in that moment of time. No excuses,” he added.
More from Amorim
19:35 , Chris WilsonAmorim adds that he “was expecting that” regarding criticism of his selection.
“It's nothing new. We just saw the game, I knew how important set pieces are, how important the guys with more experience are. Imagine if something happened at the beginning of the game against us? Harry Maguire has experience to help the other guys.
"Konate and Van Dijk, they like confrontation. One of them goes to the ball, the other creates a second line. More or less all the transitions was Cunha. He was so far from the centre-backs and that helped us to take the ball.
"Every time you play in this environment, if you [low] block well, especially in the beginning you can feel the fans turning.
"We feel that in our stadium. All the big teams suffer from that. We tried to do that. I think we have to have more possession to help our players. They struggled in the end. But a good win, let's focus on the next one.
"It will give us more confidence in the week. It will give us a lot of pleasure to our fans who deserve it after Grimsby and Brentford. To have a win like this is really important. That is on our hands. This game is the past, let's focus on the future. Things will change in time,” he added.

Amorim: 'It's a good victory'
19:30 , Chris WilsonRuben Amorim clarifies that today’s result “doesn't mean a lot. It means it today”.
“But tomorrow it is not going to mean a lot. It's three points but it's a good victory.
“I will do the same thing I did in the last few games which is try to see the game. In key points we had some luck, but we fought for every ball, we lost our composure in the second half.
"But the most important thing was the spirit was there. That is the beginning of everything. Sometimes you play more with the ball, other days you play without the ball. But if you have the spirit, you can win any game.
"Of course we need moments: to score first, saves from our goalkeeper, one shot on the post - to start believing that we can win any game. But you can feel it, any transition, some moments with the ball, they started believing it was possible.
"Now I'm concerned about Brighton. Yeah, because I have one year of experience, I will enjoy it. I'm not dumb, I have to. But let's focus on Brighton,” he adds.
Keane critical of van Dijk
19:25 , Chris Wilson"When you're a centre half and you're a big player, last year we were on about who was going to stay and he signed a big contract, then you're giving up loads of goals. I'd be looking at him and asking 'what are you doing?’”, says Keane on van Dijk.
"Particularly as a big leader of the team. A couple of years ago we talked about United parking the bus here and we were critical. Now they've scored two today and two last year and you're the centre half.
"Always start with the man in the mirror. Van Dijk, if you're the centre half and your team are all of a sudden giving up loads of goals, and you've got new people coming to your club, you've got to have a good look at yourself and think 'am I really helping people?’” added the former United captain.
Fernandes reacts
19:20 , Chris Wilson"It's always good to win games. We know what these kind of games mean for our club and our fans and also for ourselves where we are right now,” says United captain Bruno Fernandes.
"We know what it means for the fans and the club to play these rivalries. We wanted to do it because it is a long time since the club won at Anfield. It is very important so I am very happy to do it today,” he explains.
"We knew that we had to win our duels. In the first ten minutes we knew they would try to start the game very strong. Also in the first half we understood that they were under pressure when they had time on the ball, the fans were putting them in a difficult position and booing for them to play quicker.
"We wanted to slow their game and we knew that would give massive spaces around the middle. In the second half we could have played a little bit more on the ball,” he added.
Van Dijk reacts
19:15 , Chris Wilson"I think we conceded a very sloppy second goal. We worked so hard to get back into the game and we created great opportunities to score the winner but if you concede a second goal like that, that is the disappointing part,” says van Dijk as he reacts to the defeat.
On the first goal, he says: "I think the ball went long, first header was a United player, second by me. My elbow hit the player and he goes down and I went down. That angle it was difficult to score and he did. There was plenty of football left to be played [and score] and we didn't.
“If you look at the game as a whole, we were far too rushed. I think they were very patient they didn't press us high but they didn't let us on the ball. We still created many opportunities to score but the reality is that we lost.
“It is an interesting time because we have to stick together, not just us as players but as a club and the fans who want us to win.
“We need to stay humble and stay working and keep our confidence as high as possible. When things get tough, it is important we keep the mentality of being there for each other. It is a long season,” he adds.
Manchester United defeat Liverpool at Anfield
19:10 , Mike JonesA huge win for Ruben Amorim’s side.

'A huge win for this group'
19:05 , Chris WilsonRoy Keane calls the result “a huge win for this group of players”.
“They stuck at it and it is a big moment for these players and they have to enjoy it. Back-to-back wins is fantastic, but they have to kick on.
“As poor as Liverpool were, they had some chances so you need some luck in these games. It's a great win for the supporters, 10 years since they have won at Anfield. The players will go back into the training ground in a better place but they have to use this as a springboard to make sure they kick on,” he added.
Maguire: 'It means everything'
19:00 , Chris WilsonHarry Maguire says "it means everything” to win at Anfield today.
“They had had the better of us over the last few years and it's not been good for our club. We have not given our fans enough days like today, so it has been a long time coming, coming to this ground and picking up three points,” says the United defender.
"It is not just three points to the club and to the boys. I have been coming to this ground for seven years now and to not get three points have been tough. It's for the fans and I hope they had a great night tonight.
"It is nice to have one over Liverpool. Football is all about memories and making special memories. I am sure all the fans will go home with memories, we will all go home happy.
"We won't get carried away because we can't afford that as a club, we will use it as motivation.
"In this club, it will mean a lot this week and then we have Brighton at home next week. So we have to remain calm headed,” he adds.
United 'have to make sure this is the start of something'
18:55 , Chris Wilson“What a moment for Ruben Amorim. He needed something, the pressure was building but a win at Anfield is huge,” says Gary Neville on Sky.
“It's a great place for Manchester United to win a game of football. It's a big period coming up, the manager is under pressure and they pulled something out of the bag and they have to make sure this is the start of something.”

FULL-TIME! Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd
18:31 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldRichard Jolly’s full-time thoughts from Anfield:
“Terrific win for United. For all the times Liverpool hit the woodwork, Amorim's team deserved that. He got both team selection and tactics right. They defended defiantly and showed a threat on the break. Liverpool looked too disjointed, which is a theme.”
FULL-TIME! Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd
18:30 , Chris WilsonThe final whistle goes and United have won at Anfield for the first time in almost a decade!
Liverpool have lost four matches in a row now and Arne Slot looks bewildered on the Anfield turf.

Liverpool have one final chance to launch it forward as Jones is brought down. There’ll be a few more seconds added on for various stoppages, but Mainoo hooks clear and the flag goes up anyway.

Into the final minute of added time and Cunha brings the ball out of the United box before being fouled. He stretches out some cramp to waste away more seconds.
Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

More and more pressure from the hosts but there hasn’t been a clear chance in a couple of minutes, and the Anfield crowd is getting more tense as each second passes.
Chiesa sees a cross headed away before Mainoo heads away the follow up and Ugarte hooks away Kerkez’s latest cross.

Each United counter is breaking down pretty quickly but Liverpool haven't been able to capitalise so far, with their latest through ball running straight out of play.

United are barely able to get out of their own half at the moment as Maguire heads behind for another corner.
This one is cleared originally before Lammens claims the follow-up cross.

Dalot puts a Frimpong cross behind for a corner as Liverpool continue to threaten. This one comes to nothing but there will be eight minutes of added time!
Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

“Maguire almost got a winner at Anfield last season. He might have scored one now.”
Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd

Both sides made changes in amongst the chaos. For Liverpool, Frimpong replaced Salah, while Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro came in for Fernandes and Shaw.

CLOSE! It’s a sitter from Gakpo!
Frimpong stands up Dorgu well and clips in a lovely cross to his compatriot. Gakpo is standing unmarked in a central area a few yards out but he somehow can’t direct the header on target!
GOAL! Liverpool 1-2 Man Utd
18:16 , Chris Wilson84 mins
GOAL! United have regained the lead!
The corner comes in and it’s a poor effort initially but it rebounds to Fernandes, who plays in a delightful first-time cross that catches out Liverpool’s defensive line. United players are lining up to head in and Harry Maguire is there ti divert the ball across Mamardashvili!

Liverpool 1-1 Man Utd
18:14 , Chris Wilson82 mins
Liverpool are trying to make things happen in attack as they look for the winner, though United fashion a decent chance as Cunha sees a shot blocked when though in the box.
'Chiesa makes things happen'
18:12 , Chris WilsonThe latest reaction from Richard Jolly at Anfield:
“Federico Chiesa makes things happen. A useful trait in any player, but a particularly useful one in a substitute. Chiesa has been a terrific replacement this season.”
GOAL! Liverpool 1-1 Man Utd
18:10 , Chris Wilson78 mins
GOAL! It had been coming!
There’s pinball in the United box and a few rebounds as Wirtz and Ekitike fight to keep the ball in the area, with the ball laid off to Chiesa before he fizzes in a low cross that Gakpo taps in from point-blank range!

Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd

Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
18:06 , Chris Wilson75 mins
Liverpool are beginning to dominate again and they’re piling the pressure on at the moment, with Curtis Jones the latest to get free in the box before hitting a tame effort at Lammens with his weaker foot.

'Liverpool have gone for all-out attack'
18:04 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldThe latest thoughts from Richard Jolly at Anfield:
“Liverpool have gone for all-out attack with their changes. For a few minutes, Slot had all of Salah, Isak, Ekitike, Wirtz and Gakpo on the pitch together. But as it stands, it will be the first time in 13 months that they have failed to score in a Premier League match.”
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
18:04 , Chris Wilson73 mins
Sesko thinks he’s clean through but he sees his effort blocked by Konate before the flag goes up.
At the other end, Wirtz slips it to Salah, who sees his cross go straight to Lammens.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
18:02 , Chris Wilson72 mins
United are struggling to keep the ball when they do get it, though this is occasionally okay as they can launch a counter. They have to be careful committing too many men forward though with all the attacking changes the hosts have made.
Liverpool make another change as Isak makes way for Federico Chiesa.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
18:00 , Chris Wilson70 mins
It’s become fairly end-to-end now with all the attacking players that the hosts have brought on, and you’d expect plenty of chances as the game goes on.
Dorgu’s squared ball doesn't find Fernandes and the hosts counter, though it ends with Ekitike firing narrowly wide from distance.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:58 , Chris Wilson68 mins
United win a corner as van Dijk clears a cross straight off Kerkez’s face and over the bar!
The set-piece comes to nothing though, and again the hosts swarm forward, though this attack comes to nothing.

Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:56 , Chris Wilson66 mins
CLOSE! Salah will be wondering how he hasn’t levelled it!
Liverpool swarm forward with six players in the box and the cross comes all the way across the box to Salah, who is right in front of Lammens but ends up firing wide from a few yards!
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:54 , Chris Wilson64 mins
The game has already opened up a little with those changes, and Slot is clearly going for it here.
United do create an opening though, Dorgu slipping it in to Fernandes before the United captain sees his shot blocked.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:52 , Chris Wilson62 mins
Half a chance for the hosts as the ball comes to Mac Allister on the edge of the box, but he rifles his half-volley over.
United make another change, as Benjamin Sesko comes on for Mason Mount.
Liverpool respond with a triple change of their own, as Gravenberch, Bradley and Mac Allister come off for Florian Wirtz, Curtis Jones and Hugo Ekitike.
Amorim 'aware of the dangers'
17:50 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldThe latest thoughts from Richard Jolly at Anfield:
“Casemiro joins Amad in the book and then both join Amorim on the bench. A double change indicates the United manager is very aware of the dangers of going down to 10 men, but also that Gakpo was troubling Amad. So now it is Dalot at right wing-back, with Dorgu on the left.”
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:49 , Chris Wilson58 mins
A wild challenge from Casemiro as he goes straight through the back of Salah, but he gets away with a yellow. Surely he won't be staying on much longer. He’s down receiving treatment anyway.
He does indeed come off, making way for Manuel Ugarte, while Amad comes off for Patrick Dorgu. Dalot will presumably move to right wing-back now.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:46 , Chris Wilson56 mins
Salah volleys into the ground and over from the set-piece.
Liverpool come again though and Salah wins the ball back in the united half, sending Isak away before the striker wins another corner. However, de Ligt is fouled as the delivery comes in, and the visitors have time to regroup.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:44 , Chris Wilson53 mins
Amad goes into the book despite initially making a clean challenge, as his follow-through catches Gakpo. A strange decision from Michael Oliver.
From the free-kick, Maguire turn the cross over the bar and the hosts have a corner.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:42 , Chris Wilson52 mins
Gravenberch is down receiving treatment after a challenge with Mbeumo, but he’s going to try to carry on. He looks to be walking okay.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd

OFF THE POST! Gakpo again!
He takes it down from a cross and moves it across to his right foot, before wrapping his foot around a curling effort that smashes against the woodwork!
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:39 , Chris Wilson48 mins
United launch a poor free-kick routine and it gives Liverpool a chance to counter, but despite almost being 2-v-2 the through ball forward is wayward in the end.
'Same 11 for Liverpool which is interesting'
17:39 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldReaction from Richard Jolly at Anfield:
“The same 11 for Liverpool which is interesting, not least because Arne Slot brought Wirtz on at half-time at Chelsea and moved Szoboszlai to right-back then.”
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:37 , Chris Wilson46 mins
Almost a chance right away for Liverpool as Salah slides it in to Bradley in the box, but the right-back can’t quite get it under control.
KICK-OFF! Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd

HALF-TIME! Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:24 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldHere’s the reaction to that half from Richard Jolly at Anfield:
“A terrific first half for Manchester United. Ruben Amorim's gameplan is working very well, which isn't something you can always say. They may come to regret not doubling their lead, even if Cody Gakpo did twice almost draw Liverpool level.”
HALF-TIME! Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:20 , Chris WilsonA little bit end-to-end as the hosts search for an equaliser late on in the half, though attacks from both teams come to nothing as the referee blows the half-time whistle.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd

Gakpo wins a corner off Amad and the hosts will have another corner. The Dutchman delivers the ball in but it’s cleared before Casemiro takes a tumble in the box and is awarded a free-kick.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd

Fernandes tries to start another counter but once again van Dijk is there to beat Mbeumo to the ball and clear.
The board goes up for four minutes of added time as Liverpool launch their latest attack, with Bradley’s cutback eventually cleared by de Ligt.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd

Cunha sees an opening after some decent combination play between himself, Fernandes and Mbeumo, but he curls an effort wide from just outside the area.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:12 , Chris Wilson42 mins
Another close one! This would have been a freak own goal though, as Fernandes delivers the free-kick low and Gakpo somehow manages to hook it narrowly over his own bar when facing away from goal!
Fernandes delivers a dangerous cross that looks like it’s heading for the far corner but Konate is there to head over, before Kerkez heads away the next corner.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:10 , Chris Wilson38 mins
Mbeumo clips Gakpo on the wing and Liverpool will have a dangerous set-piece.
It’s cleared but the hosts come again and win a corner.
Szoboszlai swings it in and it comes to Bradley at the second time of asking – he swings in a decent cross to van Dijk at the back post but the Dutchman can only direct a header right at Lammens.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:06 , Chris Wilson35 mins
Another huge chance for the hosts! United are living a charmed life.
This time it’s a lovely through ball to Isak, who finds himself 1-v-1 with Lammens but sees his low effort saved well by the feet of the United ‘keeper.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:04 , Chris Wilson33 mins
OFF THE POST! The woodwork saves United again!
This time it’s from Cody Gakpo, as he squeezes in a cross that takes a deflection off Fernandes and loops over Lammens, clipping the inside of the post before rebounding back out past the Liverpool forwards!
'Chaos at the back for Liverpool'
17:03 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldRichard Jolly’s latest reaction from Anfield:
“Chaos at the back for Liverpool at times. Many of their problems are coming on their left flank where Milos Kerkez is having a torrid time against Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo. It is the first time this has been said this season, but there is a case for bringing Andy Robertson on.”
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
17:00 , Chris Wilson30 mins
Isak has his first chance to make a mark as Dalot’s poor clearance is straight to the Liverpool striker. He looks up and has plenty of time to take the shot, but he drags it wide.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
16:59 , Chris Wilson28 mins
And another half-chance for United – this one all Liverpool’s doing – as a poor pass back towards the keeper is almost turned in by Mbeumo, before Dalot makes a hash of the cross.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
16:58 , Chris Wilson27 mins
64 per cent possession for the hosts so far, and plenty of encouragement from some of their recent attacking. However, United have looked dangerous on the break at times.
There’s another half chance for the visitors as Mbeumo finds Fernandes on the overlap and the Portuguese’s cross is spilled by Mamardashvili, but Mount can’t turn the loose ball in.

Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
16:55 , Chris Wilson24 mins
OFF THE POST! A huge chance for United now!
Cunha does well to hold up the ball before it’s swept wide to Amad. He stands up Kerkez before laying it off perfectly to Fernandes, who opens up his body but sees his curling effort clip the post and go wide!
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
16:52 , Chris Wilson21 mins
OFF THE POST! What a counter this is from the hosts.
United give it away in midfield and within a couple of passes it’s swept forward to Gakpo, who cuts back outside before rifling a low effort that cannons back off the post!
'This scenario suits United'
16:50 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldRichard Jolly’s latest thoughts from Anfield:
“This scenario suits United. Amorim picked a team who can defend deep and who, without Sesko but with pace, can counter-attack.
“Going 1-0 down may have prompted questions of how and when to change their approach. Going 1-0 up means the onus is on Liverpool to take the initiative, which in turn could allow them to break at speed.”
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
16:49 , Chris Wilson19 mins
Shouts for a penalty as Amad blocks Gasp’s cross with his hand. The arm did look like it was out, so that will be reviewed – but VAR deem it to be in a natural position.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
16:48 , Chris Wilson17 mins
United are looking okay in possession when they do get it, but there isn’t a lot of threat when they do go forward at the moment.
The hosts are dominating possession but they haven’t found a clear-cut opening yet, though it feels like a matter of time before they do.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
16:44 , Chris Wilson13 mins
United have clearly settled into a counter-attacking plan here, and already you wonder how long they can keep this up.
Mac Allister wins a free-kick midway into the visitors’ half, and Salah or Szoboszlai will have a chance to deliver.
It’s a great ball in from the Egyptian but it ends with van Dijk sending a diving header wide at the far post.
'A superb start for Manchester United'
16:42 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldReaction from Richard Jolly at Anfield:
“A superb start for Manchester United. Amorim may have gambled by picking Amad at wing-back but he got an immediate reward for fielding a more attacking player there with his pass.
“Mbeumo put them ahead after 63 seconds. He had already looked the best of United's summer signings and that goal has reinforced that. For the third time in successive league games, Liverpool have conceded in the first 15 minutes, but this was the fastest of all.”
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
16:40 , Chris Wilson10 mins
Remarkable stuff from Kerkez as he produces an inexplicably bad foul throw that went straight to Amad anyway, though the hosts win possession back soon enough.
They’re already beginning to dominate possession, with Gravenberch the latest to beat a man in midfield before Kerkez narrowly fails to latch onto the ball in the box.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
16:37 , Chris Wilson7 mins
A lovely ball over the top from Mamardashvili sees Gakpo almost 1-v-1 from just within the United half, but he goes wide and his cross is eventually cleared. That Gakpo vs Amad match-up could be something the hosts look to exploit today.
Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
16:36 , Chris Wilson5 mins
Some controversy here with that goal as Mac Allister went down with a head injury and the game was not stopped before United scored. It wasn’t a foul, as van Dijk had hit him with his elbow, but usually those incidents see play stopped.
Mac Allister receives lengthy treatment but he’s okay to carry on.
GOAL! Liverpool 0-1 Man Utd
16:33 , Chris Wilson2 mins
GOAL! A staggering start at Anfield! United find themselves ahead before either side had any time to settle.
It’s a good goal too, with Fernandes sweeping the ball wide to Amad, who isolates Kerkez before finding Mbeumo on the overlap. The Cameroon winger is 1-v-1 with Mamardashvili and squeezes a finish past the Georgian to open the scoring!

KICK-OFF! Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd
16:31 , Chris WilsonWe’re underway at Anfield!
Liverpool vs Man Utd live
16:25 , Chris WilsonBoth sides are in the tunnel at Anfield now, so we should be underway soon in this one!
Can Liverpool move back within touching distance of Arsenal? Can United produce a decent performance at Anfield? Could they even win back-to-back league games for the first time under Amorim? We’re about to find out.
How the table looks
16:20 , Chris WilsonA reminder that Liverpool need three points today to keep within a point of leaders Arsenal, with a win taking them back into second with 18 points.
United currently sit in 12th with 10 points, and a win could take them into ninth.
