Liverpool came up against a solidly defensive Leeds side and were held to a 0-0 draw at Anfield. It was their first such result under Arne Slot and the Reds begin the new year by sharing the points with their northern counterparts.
The hosts controlled most of the game but found space tight and narrow around the Leeds penalty area as the Whites transitioned fluidly from a back three to a back five depending on which side had possession.
Leeds came into the game unbeaten in five matches and extended that run to six to further distance themselves from the relegation in a display which could have been rewarded further.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Leed’s in-form striker, started the match on the bench but came on for 20 minutes and found the back of the net only to be judged offside. Liverpool had a reprieve and neither side could go on to force a winning goal.

A new feat for Slot
19:31 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldA new feat for Slot, though his first 0-0 as Liverpool manager only brings frustration for the majority at Anfield.
But a terrific, and deserved, result for Leeds, who continue to pull away from the bottom three.
A few weeks ago, there were suggestions Daniel Farke's job was under threat. Now it is clear he is doing an excellent job.
Full-time! Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
19:25 , Mike Jones90+6 mins: The points are shared!
No late drama at Anfield and it’s a result that the match deserved.
Leeds were secure and defensive and they executed their gameplan to perfection. Liverpool couldn’t break them down and that will be something for Arne Slot to consider going further into 2026.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
19:19 , Mike Jones90 mins: Six minutes of added time to play before the end of the game.
No idea where the officials have got that number from, nothing of note has happened.
But, that’s plenty of time for a winner?
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
19:15 , Mike Jones87 mins: Arne Slot is doing his best to issue instructions from the dugouts but there’s not much creativity to Liverpool at present.
It’ll be a disappointing result for the hosts if things remain as they are but not an undeserved one.
Liverpool are onto their third right back
19:14 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldHaving started with two right-backs, Liverpool are now on to a third of the night, with Szoboszlai dropping back there.
Rio Ngumoha has come on to try and provide some spark to proceedings.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
19:10 , Mike Jones81 mins: Disallowed goal!
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has the ball in the back of the net as Leeds spy a snatch and grab.
However, Calvert-Lewin’s right leg is outstretched as the ball is played into him - he later guides the ball past Alisson - and as such the offside flag is raised.
A quick replay shows that he was slightly ahead of Virgil van Dijk so the goal doesn’t stand.
Liverpool have never drawn 0-0 under Arne Slot
19:07 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldLiverpool have never drawn 0-0 under Arne Slot.
They are getting close to making this a historic occasion - although they also threatened a 0-0 in the San Siro last month, only to score a late winner.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
19:06 , Mike Jones78 mins: A couple of rare Leeds crosses are sent into the box with Calvert-Lewin the intended target.
Bradley and Gravenberch deal with them before the Reds transition back into attack.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
19:02 , Mike Jones75 mins: Nearly!
Kerkez darts inside from the left and rolls the ball to Ekitike.
He spins and laces a shot towards goal but forces it too wide as he doesn’t get the intended curl on his effort.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
19:00 , Mike Jones72 mins: Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are both introduced into the Leeds attack as Daniel Farke replaces his forward line.
Less than 20 minutes to go in this match.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:58 , Mike Jones69 mins: A Liverpool corner is swung into the box by Szoboszlai but Leeds defend it well and Struijk nods the ball out for a second set piece.
This one is delivered onto the head of Van Dijk who powers a header into ground and directs it wide of the far post.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:54 , Mike Jones66 mins: Milos Kerkez, Cody Gakpo and Alexis Mac Allister are now introduced by Arne Slot.
Andy Robertson, Florian Wirtz and Curtis Jones are the men replaced.
Ampadu's fifth booking
18:51 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldA fifth booking of the season for Ethan Ampadu.
Think that means he will be banned for Leeds' game against Manchester United.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:51 , Mike Jones63 mins: Ethan Ampadu was at fault for the handball.
Florian Wirtz takes the free kick and pings his effort straight into the wall.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:50 , Mike Jones62 mins: Perri is called into action from a long range shot from Dominik Szoboszlai.
Perri drops to the right and makes a fine effort but a handball just outside the penalty area results in a Liverpool free kick.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:48 , Mike Jones60 mins: An hour played at Anfield and still no real chances to speak off.
Alisson and Lucas Perri have had quiet outings so far this afternoon.
Leeds have not lost since November
18:44 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldLeeds have not lost since November, and even that required a late goal from Phil Foden to defeat them at the Etihad.
They are demonstrating why they have become so tough to overcome.
So far, they have defended very well.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:43 , Mike Jones54 mins: Szoboszlai dinks a cross into the box with the outside of his right foot.
Virgil van Dijk is up there, having remained high from a corner, but he’s beaten to the aerial ball and Liverpool win another set piece.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:40 , Mike Jones51 mins: Robertson attempts a cross field pass over to Bradley on the right wing but overhits the ball.
He’s met with a few ironic cheers from the Leeds supporters after that one.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:37 , Mike Jones48 mins: A bit of forward momentum from Leeds who work the ball across the midfield and try to draw their opponents out of position.
Liverpool defend, then press strongly and force the Whites back into their own half.
Second half! Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:33 , Mike JonesLiverpool get the ball rolling once more at Anfield. Will we see some goals in this half?
HT Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:28 , Mike Jones

An uneventful first half
18:22 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldQuite an uneventful first half.
Though the same could be said for their meeting last month, and look how that turned out.
Half-time! Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:17 , Mike Jones45 mins: Nothing to separate the two sides as they head down the tunnel for the break.
Daniel Farke will be the happier of the two managers and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin up his sleeve he’s got an in form striker ready to strike in the second half.
All still to play for.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:14 , Mike Jones42 mins: Leeds have done brilliantly to keep Liverpool at bay but it hasn’t been a thrilling game so far.
A solid plan from Daniel Farke and a lack of creativity from the Reds makes for a rather dull affair.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:06 , Mike Jones36 mins: Frimpong flies down the right wing and sprints past Struijk.
He collects the loose ball and cuts it back to Florian Wirtz who is blind sided by James Justin.
The ball comes loose and Liverpool lose their attacking momentum.
Alisson redeemed himself
18:02 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldLeeds had an xG of 0.02 before Alisson passed the ball to Ampadu then.
Though he did redeem himself with the save.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
18:02 , Mike Jones33 mins: Close!
Alisson makes an error trying to play out from the back and just gives the ball away to Ethan Ampadu.
The Leeds midfielder runs onto the ball and strikes a soft, first-time effort at goal but Alisson manages to get across and smother the ball.
That could have been embarrassing for him.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
17:59 , Mike Jones30 mins: Jeremie Frimpong goes wide on the right wing and whips in a cross that gets deflected behind for a corner.
The corner is delivered by Conor Bradley but is easily dealt with by the Leeds defence.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
17:57 , Mike Jones27 mins: Ethan Ampadu launches the ball into the box where Conor Bradley throws his head at the ball.
He’s met by a high kick from Lukas Nmecha and as a results wins Liverpool a free kick and eases the pressure on the hosts.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
17:56 , Mike Jones24 mins: Liverpool’s pressing has been solid so far. They’re moving forward as a unit, piling pressure on the ball carrier and cutting off spaces for passes.
Leeds haven’t been able to transition into attack though they do manage to win a throw in inside Liverpool’s half.
Liverpool facing familiar challenge
17:53 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldLiverpool face what is quite a familiar challenge, of how to unlock a team who are defending in numbers.
One difficulty, perhaps, is that, with the notable exception of Ekitike, they don't have many Premier League goals in their team.
The next highest scorer is Ryan Gravenberch with four, though Szoboszlai has five in all competitions. One was against Leeds.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
17:50 , Mike Jones21 mins: Leeds can’t get the ball out at the minute.
Liverpool have penned them deep in their own half as Robertson swings in a cross.
Ekitike chests it down to control the ball before he’s tackled by Pascal Struijk who boots the ball away.
Ekitike was also slightly offside and the assistant referee raises the flag on the far side of the pitch.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
17:47 , Mike Jones18 mins: Liverpool have looked decent so far but they’ve not created much.
Leeds themselves seem pretty solid with a fluid back three that becomes five when the hosts have the ball.
There’s little space for Liverpool’s forward line to operate in and they haven’t managed to penetrate into the box as of yet.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
17:45 , Mike Jones15 mins: Florian Wirtz dribbles and weaves over on the left wing but can’t find a way into the box.
The ball eventually gets played back to Andy Robertson who darts towards the penalty area only for James Justin to win Leeds a free kick.
Leeds exposed Liverpool's vulnerability
17:42 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldA couple of early corners negotiated by Liverpool as life after Aaron Briggs begins.
Leeds were one of the teams to expose their frailties at set-pieces, with Ao Tanaka's injury-time equaliser at Elland Road coming from a corner.
They have a big side again today, even without Calvert-Lewin.
Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
17:34 , Mike Jones3 mins: Andy Robertson receives the ball on the left wing. He slips it inside to Hugo Ekitike who evades a tackle and gets the ball to Dominik Szoboszlai.
Leeds regain possession on the edge of their own box and feed the ball quickly forward forcing Ibrahima Konate to work the ball behind for a corner.
Kick off! Liverpool 0-0 Leeds
17:31 , Mike JonesLeeds get the ball rolling at Anfield aiming to get something out of this game.
They work down the left side of the pitch but Ryan Gravenberch is on hand to marshall the ball behind for a goal kick.
Kick off approaching...
17:25 , Mike JonesDaniel Farke explained that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is starting on the bench as a precaution to limit his minutes following a couple of injury-prone years.
Calvert-Lewin is in blistering form though so expect him to feature at some point this evening, especially if Leeds are still in with the chance of taking points back to Elland Road.
Kick off is up next...
Three in a row for Gakpo?
17:20 , Mike JonesCody Gakpo has scored in Liverpool’s first Premier League game of each of the last two calendar years, netting against Newcastle and Man Utd.
The last Reds player to score in their first league game three years in a row was Ian Rush in 1985, 1986 and 1987.

Wirtz finally on the board
17:15 , Mike JonesHaving failed to score or assist a goal in any of his first 15 Premier League appearances, Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz has now scored (1) or assisted (1) in his last two.
He last registered a goal involvement in more consecutive league games in November/December last year (a run of six with Bayer Leverkusen).

Winter wonders for the Whites
17:10 , Mike JonesLeeds United haven’t lost any of their last 10 league games played in January since a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in 2023 under Jesse Marsch.
The only side in the top four tiers on a longer current unbeaten run in January is Arsenal (11 games).
Anfield's good fortunes
17:05 , Mike JonesLiverpool have started the year with a league win in just three of the last 11 years.
Although, they haven’t lost their first game of the year when it’s been at Anfield on any of the last nine occasions (six wins, three draws).
New year, new Leeds?
17:00 , Mike JonesLeeds have won just one of their last six league games on New Year’s Day (three draws, two losses), beating Birmingham 3-0 in 2024.
This is their first New Year’s Day game in the Premier League since 2003, a 2-0 home win against Birmingham.
Arne Slot lauds key midfielder that has helped turn Liverpool’s fortunes around
16:55 , Mike JonesCurtis Jones’ return to the Liverpool team has coincided with their best run of results since September and while it may be coincidence the form of the academy graduate has suggested otherwise.
The 24-year-old was their best player in the Champions League victory over Inter Milan in the San Siro stadium, the second of his five successive starts, earlier this month and he has built on that to play an influential role in four back-to-back wins.

A poor sign for Leeds
16:50 , Mike JonesLeeds have won one of their last 16 away top-flight matches against the reigning champions (five draws, 10 defeats).
They beat Arsenal 3-2 at Highbury back in May 2003 thanks to a late Mark Viduka winner.
New year, same Liverpool
16:45 , Mike JonesLiverpool have won five of their last six Premier League games on New Year’s Day.
Their last defeat came at home to Chelsea back in 2005.
Will they extend that unbeaten run this evening?
Leeds to make history at Anfield?
16:40 , Mike JonesLeeds won 2-1 in their last away league game against Liverpool in October 2022.
They’ve never won consecutive visits to the Reds in their league history.

Expect goals from the Reds
16:35 , Mike JonesLiverpool have scored 19 goals in their last five Premier League matches against Leeds.
But, they let a 2-0 lead slip to draw 3-3 at Elland Road in December, their highest scoring draw ever with the Whites.
Virgil Van Dijk identifies solution to Liverpool’s biggest weakness: ‘It’s a killer’
16:30 , Richard JollyVirgil van Dijk has admitted Liverpool are conceding too many set-piece goals and said that the second phase is “the killer” for them.
Wolves defender Santiago Bueno scored following a corner in Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Anfield on Saturday, while the previous week, Tottenham Hotspur’s Richarlison had struck after they failed to clear a corner.

Two right backs selected by Slot
16:28 , Richard Jolly at AnfieldLiverpool haven't had a specialist right-back in their team at times this season. Now they have two, which presumably means Jeremie Frimpong will line up on the wing, with Conor Bradley in the back four. Dominik Szoboszlai is back from a ban.
But there is a Dominik but no Dominic: Dominic Calvert-Lewin's scoring run could end as he is left on the bench for Leeds.
“So are Noah Okafor, Ao Tanaka and Jayden Bogle, which suggests Daniel Farke is saving players for Sunday's game against Manchester United, which he may deem the more winnable game. There is a first Premier League start for defender Sebastiaan Bornauw.”

Almost time for the line-ups
16:12 , Mike JonesIt’s nearly time for the line-ups to drop. Liverpool are hoping to get themselves firmly into the top four and will attempt to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal.
Leeds, meanwhile, are 16th but are unbeaten in their last five matches and any points they can take from Anfield today would be a big boost.
But who have the managers selected to play out this New Year’s Day battle?
Let’s find out...
Visiting Anfield is 'most challenging and difficult task'
16:06 , Mike JonesLeeds manager Daniel Farke says he is relishing the chance to take on Liverpool a Anfield this afternoon.
He revealed: "We don't have to speak about their potential. They have dominated the league and last season, rarely a different team has done in the years before.
"To go in on New Years Day to Anfield is more or less one of the most challenging and difficult tasks you can have, but we want to have those games.
“We want to play back on the top level, we have it right now and we have challenges, and we're looking forward to this game.”

Liverpool’s £450m spending spree, examined: This has been an unhappy, underwhelming experiment
16:00 , Richard JollyThe club who began 2025 with an eight-point advantage at the Premier League summit could end it with a greater deficit to the leaders. A year of triumph and tragedy for Liverpool has also featured unprecedented spending. Glance at the league table and their transfer business and it suggests they have spent £450m to get worse. They will enter 2026 exactly half-way through their Premier League campaign. If the half-term report for the team reads ‘could do better’, that applies to most of their signings.

Liverpool’s £450m spending spree, examined: This has been an underwhelming experiment
Nothing is achieved yet
15:54 , Mike Jones"We know we are in a good position. If you are there after 18 matchdays already with 20 points, it's great,” says Leeds boss Daniel Farke.
He added: "We have shown also that there is a chance for the promoted sides and we're on a good path, but nothing is achieved yet."
Slot on reverse fixture at Elland Road
15:48 , Mike JonesThe Liverpool boss said: “I don't prefer to cope with another day like that. But it's part of our lives in football. We have highs and lows, so we have to accept that.
“What I mainly took and take from it is that we struggled a lot, or much more, when they went to a four when they started to play 4-3-3 in the last 20 minutes of the game. That's also when they scored their goals.
“But we struggled more when they played with four than when they played with five [at the back]. I will definitely look at both, but especially the moment when they went to a four at the back.”
Goals have a massive impact
15:42 , Mike JonesSlot went on to add that goals at either end of the pitch can change the momentum of a close match and he wants his team to stop conceding at crucial moments.
“It tells you how important goals are in a low-scoring sport, because that's what football is,” Slot said. “A moment can change momentum and that's what we saw last week [at Tottenham Hotspur] and what we saw [versus Wolves]. I think in both games until the moment we concede it was the performance you would like from a Liverpool team.
“Although in the first half [against Wolves] with so much ball possession, in an ideal world I see even more chances created. Again, we didn't score our first two chances.
“Goals have a massive impact on the momentum of a game and that's what's been shown in the last two games of ours for sure.”

Is Florian Wirtz finally adapting to the Premier League?
15:36 , Mike JonesAfter scoring his first goal for Liverpool in the Premier League it seems as though Florian Wirtz is beginning to show signs of the form which saw him excel in the Bundesliga.
Liverpool coach Arne Slot was asked how difficult it is to adapt to a new club and country and whether this is something Wirtz has struggled with.
Slot explained: “The first few months in a different country - because it was also my first experience going abroad - it's different. Your life is a bit upside down and that for a manager is probably not the biggest problem because I don't have to perform on the pitch, but I could fully understand that some individuals and some players need a bit of time to adapt off the pitch as well.
“The biggest adaptation if you come from abroad is this league and how intense it is, because again [against Wolverhampton Wanderers] I think even when we play once a week you could see that Hugo [Ekitike] had cramp after 70 or 75 minutes, and I didn't take Florian out because he played bad, I took him out because he was hardly able to keep on running anymore.
“That has also been the situation with him but also that tells you about the new players that we've brought in and how big of a step it is to adjust to these intensity levels.”
Man City move ahead of Liverpool in Antoine Semenyo battle
15:30 , Richard JollyManchester City have opened talks with Bournemouth about Antoine Semenyo in a bid to sign the winger when the transfer window opens.
Semenyo has a £65m release clause in his contract with the Cherries but there are still issues to discuss as Pep Guardiola tries to make him his first buy of 2026.
Liverpool are also interested in the Ghana international and face a decision whether to trigger the release clause themselves and match City’s interest.

Can Leeds impress at Anfield?
15:24 , Mike JonesWhy not?
That’s the answer Jaka Bijol gave after being asked if his Leeds side can get a positive result against Liverpool away from home.
Speaking in the pre-match press conference he said: “We just want to continue to keep the good results and why not at Anfield as well?
“The first game, not so long ago, against Liverpool was crazy. It was a crazy game at Elland Road. The energy here is always fantastic.
“We took it as a positive, 3-3 at the end. We will have to have a little bit more of a calm game in Anfield to get the results we want.”
Bijol wants to continue good form
15:18 , Mike JonesLeeds United defender Jaka Bijol hopes his team can continue their recent form and perhaps improve on their run of five games unbeaten.
Three of those results ended in draws and Bijol believes that Leeds can start turning close matches their way.
“We are in [a good run] of results and now we are just looking forward to the Liverpool game and just hope to continue with that,” said the defender.
“We have a really good energy at the moment. Just good performances on the pitch and it shows on the results at the end of the day.
“I think maybe in the past we deserved some results even better than we got at the end. But the performances are there, I think, and we just have to continue like that.”

Farke issues injury update on Rodon
15:12 , Mike JonesJoe Rodon is definitely out of today’s clash with Liverpool as confirmed by Leeds head coach Daniel Farke.
He said: “Yes, he will definitely miss the Liverpool game. The diagnosis is better than we were fearing straight after the game because it didn’t look really good.
“But the assessment is it is an ankle ligament injury and normally, yeah, you will be out with such an injury for around three weeks.
“We still have a bit of hope because normally he is a good healer and also a strong boy. So perhaps there is a chance to involve him even before.
“But at the moment, I would say it is realistic that he will miss the games, including also the FA Cup game.
“And then hopefully on the other side of the FA Cup game, we have him then pretty soon back available for the games.”
Liverpool sack set-piece coach over dismal Premier League record
15:06 , Mike JonesLiverpool’s set-piece coach Aaron Briggs has left the club as he has paid the price for their disastrous record at defending free kicks and corners.
The Premier League champions have conceded the most goals in the division – 12 – from set-pieces, including two in their last two games.
Liverpool have only scored three goals from dead-ball situations, meanwhile, leading head coach Arne Slot to regularly bemoan their “negative set-piece balance”.

Early team news for Leeds United

Daniel Farke otherwise has a full squad to select from.
Liverpool's early team news
14:48 , Mike JonesCody Gakpo returned off the bench in the win against Wolves and will be pushing to start, potentially ahead of Federico Chiesa, while Dominik Szoboszlai will be available again, having missed the Wolves clash through suspension.
Mohamed Salah remains away on Afcon duty with Egypt, while this match could come too soon for Wataru Endo and Joe Gomez.
Alexander Isak is a long-term absentee.

When is Liverpool vs Leeds?
14:36 , Mike JonesThe Premier League meeting between Liverpool and Leeds kicks off at 5:30pm on Thursday 1 January at Anfield.

Liverpool vs Leeds
14:30 , Mike JonesLiverpool take on Leeds United in this New Year’s Day clash in the Premier League at Anfield.
Arne Slot’s side defeated bottom-of-the-table Wolves on Saturday for their third consecutive Premier League win, with Florian Wirtz scoring his first goal for the Reds.
Leeds earned a good point away at high-flying Sunderland, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin continuing his impressive scoring streak. The striker has now scored seven goals in his last six Premier League appearances.
The last time these two met was only at the start of December, when Leeds scored a stoppage-time equaliser to draw 3-3 against Liverpool, who spurned a 2-0 and 3-2 lead.
Good afternoon!
12:37 , Mike JonesWelcome to The Independent’s coverage of today’s Premier League clash between Liverpool and Leeds at Anfield.
The last time these two sides met in the top flight was at Elland Road in a fantastic 3-3 draw which was the catalyst for Mohamed Salah’s media outburst after the game.
Plenty has happened since then with Salah seemingly reintegrated into the Liverpool team - though he will miss today’s match due to being on Afcon duty - and both teams excelling in recent results.
Arne Slot’s men have won each of their four matches since the clash at Elland Road while Leeds are unbeaten in that time with two draws and a win.
Today’s encounter should be an interesting one so let’s get into the build-up...
