Liverpool are celebrating their latest Merseyside derby win over Everton. The reigning champions remain top of the Premier League table after making it five wins from five to begin their title defence at a gloomy Anfield on Saturday, though once again they certainly did not have everything their own way.
Arne Slot’s side coasted into a comfortable 2-0 lead with a vibrant early showing in the lunchtime kick-off, having picked up from where they left off in Wednesday’s dramatic 3-2 victory against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, with Ryan Gravenberch doubling his tally for the season with a remarkable finish ahead of a fourth strike of the campaign from Hugo Ekitike that went through the legs of Jordan Pickford.
Everton weren’t really at the races in the first half but delivered a resurgent showing after the interval, inspired once again by Jack Grealish. His cross to the back post was laid off by Iliman Ndiaye for Idrissa Gana Gueye, who smashed a shot past Alisson to tee up an electric finale, where Liverpool just about held on with no need for another late goal having again wobbled badly with a 2-0 lead but not paid the price.
Liverpool vs Everton highlights

- GOAL! Ekitike fires through Pickford's legs

A thoroughly absorbing Merseyside derby contest draws to a close.
Grealish and Moyes are both complaining bitterly to referee Darren England - Grealish has been booked.
Despite a fine late effort, Everton’s miserable record at Anfield continues.
Still no wins there for Moyes in his entire career.
Five out of five now for the champions, who stay perfect and sitting pretty at the top and six points clear before the rest of the weekend’s action, with a trip to Crystal Palace coming after Tuesday’s Carabao Cup third-round tie at home to Southampton.
Everton stay seventh for now. They go to Wolves in the cup before hosting West Ham.

Liverpool 2-1 Everton
14:18 , George Flood90 mins: Excellent defending from Kerkez to head Grealish’s latest left-wing cross behind with O’Brien lurking.
The ball falls to Grealish on the volley after the corner, but it’s blasted into the stands.
Only three minutes of added time signalled. Is there a late twist to come?

Liverpool 2-1 Everton
14:06 , George Flood75 mins: Everton are under serious pressure again but a foul on Tarkowski sees them earn a free-kick from Liverpool’s latest corner.
The fouls are totting up on both sides.
Dewsbury-Hall has been booked for taking a free-kick too quickly.
Deary me.
Liverpool 2-1 Everton

Liverpool 2-1 Everton
14:00 , George Flood70 mins: Some very dangerous balls into the box from Everton now, but Liverpool just about stand firm.

Great from Mykolenko too.

Liverpool 2-1 Everton
13:53 , George Flood63 mins: Liverpool have been spurred into action by that Everton goal, with the likes of Mykolenko forced into crucial interventions as the visitors’ box comes under real threat.
A Liverpool foul eventually relieves the pressure.
Alexander Isak’s introduction is imminent.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-1 Everton | Idrissa Gana Gueye 58'
13:46 , George Flood58 mins: Bang! Game on.
Grealish at the heart of it all for Everton again, standing up a cross to the back post that is laid back coolly by Ndiaye for Gana Gueye, who emphatically smashes beyond Alisson.
Everton deserve that. Can they find another?

Grealish is giving Bradley a torrid time.

Liverpool 2-0 Everton
13:43 , George Flood54 mins: Konate with a solid block to deny Dewsbury-Hall after a decent Everton attack led by Grealish.
Isak is out warming up for Liverpool and I think Jones will be on soon.
Liverpool 2-0 Everton
13:42 , George Flood53 mins: Liverpool are probing patiently for another chance just outside the Everton box, Ekitike driving in off the left and producing a low strike that is easily blocked by Tarkowski.
Salah tries to pick out the French striker with a lofted ball to the back post that is overhit.
Liverpool 2-0 Everton
13:39 , George Flood51 mins: Grealish with a couple of chances to run at Bradley, but he can’t pick out a pass.
Uncharacteristically sloppy from Liverpool as they repeatedly give the ball back to their rivals in needless fashion.

Liverpool 2-0 Everton
13:20 , George FloodHalf-time
Goals from Gravenberch and Ekitike have the champions comfortably ahead at the break in this Merseyside derby and on course for a fifth win out of five to start their Premier League title defence.
It was a painfully slow start by Everton, but they have been the better team since falling 2-0 behind, with Grealish and Ndiaye impressing on the flanks.
Dewsbury-Hall, Beto and Gana Gueye have all had chances, but failed to trouble Alisson.
Not enough cutting edge.

Liverpool 2-0 Everton
13:18 , George Flood45 mins: Grealish is still causing Liverpool all sorts of problems and his perfect cut-back for Gana Gueye is not hit cleanly enough by the Senegalese midfielder, whose scuffed effort is held by Alisson.
Another good opportunity for Everton.
Just the one minute of added time signalled.
Hugo Ekitike goal

Liverpool 2-0 Everton
13:14 , George Flood42 mins: Everton are still in the ascendancy towards the end of the first half, now Grealish asking all the questions.
Alisson makes an initial confident punch and now the Toffees have another corner.
Garner goes short to Grealish, getting it back and eventually firing straight at Ekitike.
Liverpool 2-0 Everton
13:13 , George Flood40 mins: Bradley holds back Grealish, who signals to the referee that’s the fourth foul on him already by the Liverpool right-back.
Van Dijk celebrates loudly after Alisson collects a loose ball in the Liverpool box ahead of his new nemesis Tarkowski.
Liverpool 2-0 Everton
13:11 , George Flood38 mins: More joy for Everton in these last few minutes, with Ndiaye leading the way.
Kerkez and Van Dijk are forced into a couple of important interventions inside the Liverpool box.
Now a word of warning for respective captains Van Dijk and Tarkowski from referee Darren England as they jostle for position ahead of a long throw from the right from O’Brien, which is comfortably cleared.
Liverpool 2-0 Everton
13:09 , George Flood36 mins: An errant pass out on the wet surface from Alisson intended for Mac Allister goes straight to Ndiaye, who charges down the Everton right before his cross is turned high and wide by Beto.
That was a very difficult chance, in fairness. The ball was delivered too far behind him.
Liverpool 2-0 Everton
13:07 , George Flood33 mins: A spot of scruffy pinball around the Liverpool box and it almost falls kindly for Beto, but Alisson gratefully gathers as Van Dijk keeps a watchful eye.
Liverpool 2-0 Everton
13:04 , George Flood31 mins: Mykolenko battles away with Mac Allister, trying to stir Everton into a response.
But they are still under so much pressure.
Ndiaye was booked before the second goal for a foul on Kerkez.
GOAL! Liverpool 2-0 Everton | Hugo Ekitike 29'
13:00 , George Flood29 mins: Liverpool double their derby lead just before the half-hour mark!
It’s a great passing move that ends with Gravenberch turning provider for Ekitike, who calmly fires through the legs of Pickford and in.
A huge mountain to climb already for Everton.
Liverpool 1-0 Everton
12:59 , George Flood26 mins: Referee Darren England is certainly letting plenty go in the early stages of this derby.
Lovely play down the left by Everton, with Grealish leaving Gravenberch behind in some style.
He steams forward and slides in Dewsbury-Hall, who miscues a poor shot wide of the near post.
That was a real chance for Everton. Brilliant from Grealish.
Liverpool 1-0 Everton
12:56 , George Flood22 mins: Everton’s first real attack of the day sees a fine ball played through into the box for Beto, but it rather skids off the surface and behind for a corner off Konate.
Gana Gueye’s hopeful strike is then blocked and Liverpool counter at pace, Salah teeing up an unmarked Gakpo for a disappointing volley that crashes into the ground and well over Pickford’s crossbar.
Liverpool 1-0 Everton
12:52 , George Flood20 mins: Liverpool fans pay tribute to the late Diogo Jota in the 20th minute at Anfield.
Liverpool 1-0 Everton
12:51 , George Flood18 mins: A couple of key blocks from Everton there, including one from Mykolenko.
Moyes’ men desperately need an out ball here... and fast.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton
12:49 , George Flood14 mins: These are very dangerous moments indeed for Everton - Liverpool are absolutely dominating this game and have been all over them since scoring.
Tarkowski makes a crucial intervention before Salah bends an effort narrowly over the crossbar.
This derby could be over very quickly for the Toffees if they don’t wake up.
GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Everton | Ryan Gravenberch 10'
12:42 , George Flood10 mins: The derby deadlock is broken early - and what a finish that is!
Everton are denied a free-kick and Liverpool pour forward, Gravenberch expertly lofting a dazzler of a half-volley up beyond Pickford and in at the back post.
What a goal. Assist for Salah.
A nightmare start for Everton.
Liverpool 0-0 Everton
12:41 , George Flood9 mins: Grealish is stunned as he doesn’t get a free-kick despite having Bradley draped all over him.
That is already a fascinating and potentially fiery battle brewing nicely down Everton’s left side.
Liverpool 0-0 Everton
12:39 , George Flood7 mins: Patient build-up from Liverpool, with O’Brien doing just enough to put off Gakpo as he looked to strike.
The Reds are dominating possession at the moment, probing calmly in search of an early opening.
Liverpool 0-0 Everton
12:37 , George Flood5 mins: Battling efforts from Mac Allister and Kerkez to see off the danger down Liverpool’s left flank and earn a throw-in.
Both teams are trying to press high early on, with Bradley leading a dangerous Reds counter-attack but he isn’t picked out on the return pass inside the box.
Liverpool sustain their early bout of pressure...
Liverpool 0-0 Everton
12:35 , George Flood4 mins: Liverpool in control of the early stages at Anfield, as you might expect.
A lack of quality from both sides though in the early going.
Both sets of fans are in fine voice.
Liverpool 0-0 Everton
12:34 , George Flood3 mins: A sluggish start from Everton in possession and Ekitike nicks the ball away from Gana Gueye.
Salah’s cross intended for Ekitike is then headed clear.

Moyes confirms Rohl injury blow for Everton
11:46 , George FloodDavid Moyes has confirmed ahead of the derby that Vitalii Mykolenko is still not fully fit, so it will be a case of how long he is able to manage this afternoon.
He also revealed that Merlin Rohl picked up a knock in training yesterday, hence his omission from the Everton squad at Anfield.
The German midfielder made his debut off the bench against Aston Villa last weekend after joining on a season-long loan from Bundesliga side Freiburg on Deadline Day that includes an obligation to buy next summer for £17.3m.

One Everton change as Mykolenko ruled fit to start
11:37 , George FloodDavid Moyes makes just one change to the Everton team that drew 0-0 at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League last weekend.
Vitalii Mykolenko is passed fit after injury and starts in a boost at left-back, with James Garner shifted back to his natural home in midfield as Tim Iroegbunam drops to the bench.
Midfielder Merlin Rohl, on loan from Freiburg, is out of the squad entirely.
A first Merseyside derby appearance for Jack Grealish.
No Jarrad Branthwaite still, so Michael Keane continues alongside James Tarkowski at centre-back.

Isak and Wirtz on Liverpool bench as Slot makes four changes
11:30 , George FloodSo the headline team news for Liverpool is their most-expensive summer signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz both being named on the bench.
Hugo Ekitike leads the attack as expected, with Dominik Szoboszlai pushed forward as a rested Alexis Mac Allister returns to partner Ryan Gravenberch in midfield.
Conor Bradley replaces Jeremie Frimpong at right-back, while Andy Robertson makes way for Milos Kerkez on the left.

Moyes: Liverpool have earned the right to spend big
11:11 , George FloodLiverpool lavished around £450m on new signings during an incredible summer window, including potentially breaking the British transfer record twice in quick succession with the headline captures of the £116m Florian Wirtz and £125m Alexander Isak.
David Moyes said yesterday that the Reds had earned the right to spend those sorts of eye-watering sums given their success - though pointed out that they had invested more in one single player than Everton had in their entire squad.
"You have to earn the right to (spend money). First of all you have to win and be in the big competitions which make the money," said Moyes.
"I found at West Ham three years in Europe allowed us to spend money and bring money in.
"From that point of view I think Liverpool are entitled to do it. I heard Arne defending himself saying he's brought in a lot of money as well.
"But I still think they've spent more on one player than we have on the whole squad."

Slot could consider Isak and Ekitike partnership
11:01 , George FloodIt should be a case of either Alexander Isak or Hugo Ekitike up front for Liverpool today, with the latter seeming likely to get the nod after his rival started and played almost an hour against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in midweek.
But Arne Slot was also quizzed at his pre-Everton press conference yesterday on if he would consider the possibility of pairing his two summer striker signings together this season.
“I consider, of course, because you consider many things and it depends always on how well they are doing, so if both of them are in the best form of their life you would even consider it more, playing them together,” he said.
“But it’s also clear that we have a certain structure, which has mainly been 4-3-3 [and] playing with three midfielders, but the amount of times we have, at the end phase of the game, played with two nines, that has happened quite a lot as well.
“Hugo can indeed also play from the left differently from Cody [Gakpo] or Rio [Ngumoha] and that’s the good thing about our squad, we have multiple options.
“But first of all they all have to stay fit to have these options and if some of them are not fit then we might have to use them both in a 4-4-2.
“That all depends on the form of them and how many players we have available.
“All of them are fit now and I think I can maybe choose between 21 players, so that’s quite normal. It’s not that it’s far too much.”

Gloomy start at Anfield
10:57 , George FloodSo much for that promise of an Indian summer across the UK.
It’s a gloomy morning at Anfield, where the floodlights are already switched on.
Judging by the forecast, we can expect plenty of heavy rain and cloud this afternoon.
Let’s hope the inclement weather doesn’t spoil what could be a cracking game.

Slot thanks Everton for solidarity after Diogo Jota's death
10:47 , George FloodDespite the obvious local rivalry and this fixture having produced more red cards than any other in Premier League history (25), there has always been more of a healthy undercurrent of respect between these clubs than you typically observe in many other famous derbies - off the pitch at least.
Speaking on that topic on Friday, Liverpool boss Arne Slot was keen to praise Everton’s response to Diogo Jota’s tragic passing in July.
"They are a good team and there is rivalry but what I also liked and what I want to emphasise is - what they did when Diogo passed away," he said.
"They showed their respect and in these moments of time, it is so nice to see that in tragedies that the rivalry is still there but the respect to both is still there."

Stage is set
10:38 , George FloodThe calm before the inevitable storm at Anfield, where Liverpool won 1-0 against Everton back in April courtesy of a second-half goal from the late Diogo Jota.
The (delayed) last-ever Merseyside derby to be held at Goodison Park in February ended in utter chaos, with James Tarkowski scoring a last-gasp equaliser in a thrilling 2-2 draw before no fewer than four red cards were brandished after the final whistle - including to Arne Slot.

Everton and Moyes out to end Anfield hoodoo
10:28 , George FloodThere’s simply no sugarcoating it - Everton have an abysmal record at Anfield in modern times, as does manager David Moyes.
Their 2-0 win here in February 2021 under Carlo Ancelotti during the Covid-19 pandemic was their first at the famous old ground since 1999.
Per Opta Sports, Liverpool have lost just one of their last 28 home matches against Everton across all competitions, winning four in a row since that shock loss four years ago.
Everton have won only two of the last 29 Merseyside derbies in total, not scoring in five of the last seven.
David Moyes has never won at Anfield during his long managerial career, losing 14 and drawing six of his 20 visits.
Can that change today?

Liverpool vs Everton prediction
10:17 , George FloodIt has been four years since Everton last won a Merseyside derby at Anfield, and this is as good a chance as any for them to get the better of their biggest rivals in their own backyard.
They are a team transformed under David Moyes this season, partly inspired by Jack Grealish’s attacking impetus.
Liverpool have been unconvincing at times this term.
They are still vulnerable in transition and have made a habit of leaving it late to close out results.
That was the case in a 1-0 win over Burnley last time out, decided by a 95th-minute penalty from Mohamed Salah.
If Everton are quick out of the gates and can push their hosts to the finish, there is no reason they can’t come away with a point, but we’re backing Liverpool to get the job done once more.
Liverpool to win, 3-1.

Everton team news
10:12 , George FloodEverton boss David Moyes said at his pre-match press conference yesterday that defenders Jarrad Branthwaite and Vitalii Mykolenko were both making progress in their respective injury recoveries.
However, it remains to be seen if either will play any part for the Toffees at Anfield this lunchtime.
Michael Keane has been filling in for Branthwaite all season alongside James Tarkowski in central defence, while midfielder James Garner has mostly operated out of position at left-back so far this term.
Moyes also confirmed on Friday that Everton were dealing with “a couple of other knocks”, though he did not confirm the identities of the players in question.

Liverpool team news
10:06 , George FloodUnbeaten Liverpool have a clean bill of health for today’s derby, with England midfielder Curtis Jones now recovered from a knock sustained against Arsenal that forced him to miss the subsequent wins over Burnley and Atletico Madrid.
There are still a few key selection dilemmas facing Arne Slot, the most notable of which is up front.
Alexander Isak started and played just shy of an hour on his highly-anticipated Reds debut in the Champions League in midweek, but remains some way short of full match fitness and is being brought along slowly.
Fellow summer signing Hugo Ekitike will therefore likely lead the attack instead this afternoon, with Isak on the bench.
