Liverpool vs Crystal Palace live: Devenny the hero for Palace as Community Shield thriller settled on penalties

FA Cup winners Crystal Palace beat Premier League champions Liverpool 3-2 on penalties to win the Community Shield after an entertaining 2-2 draw at Wembley.

Substitute Justin Devenny scored the winning spot kick to give Palace the spoils, after Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott missed for the Reds.

New recruit Hugo Ekitike had put Liverpool ahead inside four minutes before Jean-Philippe Mateta levelled from the penalty spot in the 17th for Palace after Virgil van Dijk brought down Ismaila Sarr.

Close-season signing Jeremie Frimpong restored the Reds' lead, as Liverpool fans marked the death of Portugal forward Diogo Jota with 20 minutes on the clock, sending an attempted cross looping in off the post.

But Palace equalised again with 13 minutes to play, Sarr slotting past onrushing goalkeeper Alisson to send the traditional season curtain-raiser to penalties.

Oliver Glasner speaks

19:03 , Lawrence Ostlere

I told the players [at half-time] to keep calm, I was proud of how they played. They were unlucky with the second goal. I knew if we stuck to the plan then we would get our chances and we always know if we take them we will win the game.”

On the shootout: Justin [Devenny] came to me and said ‘I’ll take it, I’ll take the last one’. I like him having this confidence and the determination to win us the game, he will play many minutes for us this season.”

Oliver Glasner speaks!

18:40 , Lawrence Ostlere

The Crystal Palace manager tells TNT Sports: “I have to give big credit to the players for this win today, we came back and were able to decide the game on penalties. We were on the same level as Liverpool and it was a big performance, I'm proud of the team.

We know what we can do and how we can create chances. Things have developed over 18 months and the players are really starting to believe in what we are doing. I knew we could score at least two goals.”

Palace exploit lavish Liverpool's flaws at Wembley

18:15 , Richard Jolly

Here’s Richard Jolly’s report from Wembley:

Glad all over again. For the second time in a summer, Crystal Palace came to Wembley, fearlessly took on one of the superpowers and made off with silverware, aided by Dean Henderson’s excellence at saving penalties. It was not even the best day of their 2025, given their FA Cup triumph over Manchester City, but, if they are consigned to the Conference League by Uefa, European football’s governing body may note that Oliver Glasner’s trophy-gathering habit might mean they win it.

As they claimed their latest prize, Palace supplied a reminder that money cannot buy everything. A side shorn of signings in their starting XI beat one furnished with four expensive arrivals. For a while it seemed as though Hugo Ekitike would be the match-winner on his competitive Liverpool debut, then that Jeremie Frimpong would. Instead, the decisive kick of the ball came from the unheralded Justin Devenny. Formerly of Airdrie, perhaps only sent on because Marc Guehi had cramp, the Northern Ireland international midfielder almost delivered a 95th-minute winner, then converted the winning penalty in the shootout.

Palace exploit flaws in new-look Liverpool to win Community Shield on penalties

Palace double up at Wembley

18:06 , Lawrence Ostlere

Ally McCoist on TNT Sports: “If you'd have said to the Crystal Palace fans a year ago that they'd win two trophies at Wembley in the next 12 months... I think they definitely would have taken that.”

'Henderson is top class'

17:53 , Lawrence Ostlere

“Dean Henderson wanted to be the number one at Manchester United,” said former Palace striker Glenn Murray on Radio 5 Live.

“He left them to go and be that at Crystal Palace and he is showing that he is a really top-class goalkeeper.”

Video: Devenny's trophy-winning penalty

That winning moment – what courage from Justin Devenny to look Alisson Becker in the eyes and then place it into the top corner.

Palace lift the Community Shield

17:34 , Lawrence Ostlere

Palace players file up the stairs to receive their prize. Marc Guehi raises the Community Shield aloft a little sheepishly, without quite the same gusto as the FA Cup, and Glad All Over blares out once more.

Crystal Palace win the Community Shield

17:29 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Up the steps Oliver Glasner leads the Crystal Palace players. They’ll find out their European fate tomorrow, of course, but there is plenty of reason to celebrate tonight after another successful Wembley day.

The FA Cup may have meant much, much more, but this club knows how hard silverware can be to earn.

Palace fans are staying to party

17:24 , Lawrence Ostlere

Lawrence Ostlere at Wembley:

“Liverpool fans streamed out as soon as the ball hit the net, and most of them had gone by the time ‘Glad All Over’ began playing out across the stadium. Palace fans are not moving an inch from their seats as the trophy presentation is prepared on the pitch.”

Dean Henderson speaks to TNT Sports

17:23 , Harry Latham-Coyle

“It’s incredible. These emotions are fantastic. They were 2-1 up, you think we are out of the game, but the lads stuck at it. The manager said we’d get opportunities in the second half in transition and we did. The homework we did for the penalties was great, so thanks to everyone behind the scenes for the help with that.

“Obviously we turned up today and they were the favourites. We knew it would be difficult and we had to work so hard. Two trophies in three months, is it? That’s incredible. Hopefully we can take that momentum into the season.”

CRYSTAL PALACE WIN THE COMMUNITY SHIELD!

17:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Emphatically thumped into the top corner! A corker of a penalty from Justin Devenny to seal Community Shield triumph for Crystal Palace.

Liverpool 2-2 Crystal Palace*

17:16 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And the midfielder does. No chance for Dean Henderson even having gone the right way.

Justin Devenny, on in the final minutes for a stricken Marc Guehi - perhaps with exactly this moment in mind...

Liverpool* 1-2 Crystal Palace

17:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Off the underside of the crossbar! Inches from perfection from Borna Sosa but down and out it comes.

Dominik Szoboszlai has to score.

Tame and saved! Much too straight, much too weak, and Crystal Palace will have the chance to win it with a penalty to spare.

Borna Sosa, on his competitive Crystal Palace debut...

Ice cool in the London heat. An amble up and perfectly placed into the top corner.

Harvey Elliott will take Liverpool’s fourth penalty.

That allows Cody Gakpo to level. Crystal Palace still with their noses in front, though, if Ismaila Sarr can score.

Liverpool* 0-1 Crystal Palace

Kept out! A stutter on the approach and Alisson gets just enough of a piece of it to knock it against the post.

The Brazilian is just about ruled to have been on his line at the time of taking.

Liverpool 0-1 Crystal Palace*

17:11 , Harry Latham-Coyle

SAVED! Superb from Dean Henderson, doffing his cap after an outstanding leap to his left to deny the Liverpool midfielder. There’s not a lot wrong with that penalty at all.

Eberechi Eze to take.

Liverpool* 0-1 Crystal Palace

17:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Jean-Philippe Mateta has beaten Alisson once from the spot. Can he do it again?

You bet. Nonchalant from the Frenchman. Palace nudge in front.

It’ll be Alexis Mac Allister up next...

Liverpool 0-0 Crystal Palace*

17:09 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mohamed Salah...over the crossbar! Wow. That’s a shocker of a penalty.

Penalty shootout

17:08 , Harry Latham-Coyle

These spot-kicks will be taken in about the only bit of the ground not shrouded in shade, bright sunshine lighting up the penalty area towards which Mohamed Salah is striding. Can he put Liverpool ahead?

Penalty shootout

17:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Virgil van Dijk wins the toss. The penalties will be taken in front of the Liverpool end.

Dean Henderson still has his cap on. Alisson’s choice of accoutrement is a headband.

To penalties...

17:04 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A shootout to settle things, then. Jean-Philippe Mateta has already scored one in this thrilling Community Shield clash, of course, with Crystal Palace twice hitting back having fallen behind to take it to penalties.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool, 90 + 6 minutes

17:02 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Nearly a goal with his first touch! Justin Devenny almost made himself a hero, arriving on to an inviting square pass from Eberechi Eze and side-footing half-a-yard past the post.

That’ll be that, though.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool, 90 + 4 minutes

17:01 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Who are the penalty takers in either side? Both have plenty of fine footballers out there.

Dean Henderson ensures his side are still on course to get to a shootout with sharp work to get off his line and cut out a cross bound for Mohamed Salah.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool, 90 + 2 minutes

16:59 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Guehi stays on. The corner is headed out to Dominik Szoboszlai, whose low curler is claimed in comfort by Dean Henderson.

Guehi falls to floor again. Young midfielder Justin Devenny, a Northern Ireland international, is sent on.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool, 90 minutes

16:58 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A cramping Marc Guehi slowly gets himself back on his feet as the board goes up to signal five added minutes. Immediately, Liverpool attack down his channel, but Maxence Lacroix stands up superbly to the threat of Mohamed Salah.

Guehi’s in a spot of bother. Surely Crystal Palace need to get someone on before the corner?

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool, 87 minutes

16:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A booking for Mohamed Salah as he hauls back Eberechi Eze to prevent a Crystal Palace counter-attack.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool, 86 minutes

16:53 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Just another reminder that we will be straight to penalties if this scoreline remains. Can either side nick a winner?

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool, 84 minutes

16:51 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Another Liverpool double switch: Andy Robertson and Harvey Elliott replace Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz.

Oliver Glasner answers with a change of his own: enter Jefferson Lerma, exit Adam Wharton from the Crystal Palace midfield.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool, 83 minutes

16:50 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It’s end to end stuff again with this game ending as it started. Jean-Philippe Mateta balloons a shot over the bar having elected to shoot immediately rather than take a touch he probably, on reflection, needed.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool, 81 minutes

16:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Wow. That’s the sort of chance Mohamed Salah normally buries, striking the ball cleanly as it comes across to him - yet straight at Dean Henderson, who holds on and flops to floor with cap on his head.

'Sarr has been a problem all game'

16:48 , Lawrence Ostlere

Lawrence Ostlere at Wembley:

“Sarr has been a thorn in Liverpool’s side all afternoon, specifically either side of their centre-backs, where the full-backs have often been missing, and this time he makes the most of the chance with a well-taken finish. The Palace fans are rocking once more.”

Penalty? Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool, 78 minutes

16:47 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Is that a handball? A leaping Alexis Mac Allister misjudges the flight of a cross, and ball does appear to strike arm.

The video assistant referee is taking a look...just a corner, thanks to an excellent block in the melee that follows from Milos Kerkez. You’ve seen them given recently, you’d have to say.

Crystal Palace 2-2 Liverpool, 78 minutes

16:46 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Borna Sosa was ready to come on before that goal and Crystal Palace’s new wing-back will still be used, Tyrick Mitchell taken off.

GOAL! CRYSTAL PALACE 2-2 Liverpool (Ismaila Sarr, 77 minutes)

16:44 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That won’t! Ismaila Sarr levels!

It’s a lovely pass from Adam Wharton to set Sarr free but what are the Liverpool defence doing? Virgil van Dijk steps out of the line due to the threat of Jean-Philippe Mateta peeling back, but nobody goes with him nor fills in behind. Sarr is thus left all alone and finds the right angle, knocking in off the inside of the far post.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 75 minutes

16:42 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That drinks break and subsequent injury stoppage just appears to have disrupted the rhythm of the game. That’ll suit Liverpool and their slender lead.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 73 minutes

16:40 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A sore one for Jeremie Frimpong, caught by both Wataru Endo and, more painfully, Adam Wharton as the trio tangle over a bouncing ball. Frimpong eventually gets back to his feet and is able to continue.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 71 minutes

16:39 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Here they come. Hugo Ekitike and Curtis Jones are the men replaced by Mac Allister and Endo. That will mean a reshuffle - Florian Wirtz through the middle?

Jones had a pretty good outing, though Ryan Gravenberch will surely resume that role once back from paternity leave.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 70 minutes

The players take drinks with two Liverpool substitutes stripped and ready. Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo will bolster the midfield ranks.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 68 minutes

16:35 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Crystal Palace need to keep the pressure on. They’ve been very good in the last 10 minutes but a few misplaced passes are starting to come.

Liverpool pour forward on the back of one of them and Florian Wirtz has to do better than troubling the patrons 20 rows behind Dean Henderson’s goals. He knows it, too, ruefully shaking his head.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 65 minutes

16:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

An errant idea and pass from Adam Wharton. The midfielder lofts a ball forward expecting Jean-Philippe Mateta to have made a run in behind but the French striker is nowhere to be found.

It appears Alexis Mac Allister will soon be into the fray.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 62 minutes

16:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Top save from Alisson! Eberechi Eze works room on the left and fires with his left peg, but the Brazilian goalkeeper’s spread is excellent, hand and foot both out in blocking position and combining to prevent a firm drive’s passage past him.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 60 minutes

16:28 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Jean-Philippe Mateta gestures to the Crystal Palace crowd, urging them to lift the volume even higher as they put the pressure on Liverpool.

Another opportunity! Adam Wharton sends in a corner that Chris Richards meets on a bending run and directs right into the breadbasket of Alisson.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 58 minutes

16:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Almost for Crystal Palace! A lovely inswinging ball from Marc Guehi is first clicked by Jean-Philippe Mateta and then Ismaila Sarr, but neither is quite able to find the requisite diversion to send it into the net. Sarr may well have been offside when it hit the head of Mateta, anyway, yet Palace are showing real promise in attack here.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 56 minutes

16:22 , Harry Latham-Coyle

You just get a sense that a goal is coming here, though. Cody Gakpo waits slightly too long to unfurl a shot from 15 yards and Will Hughes is able to plant himself in its path.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 54 minutes

16:21 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Good covering from Curtis Jones, that. The midfielder has been tidy today in a role normally occupied by Ryan Gravenberch and gets back to help out Ibrahima Konate after Eberechi Eze had appeared to have broken beyond the Liverpool defence.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 53 minutes

This time Ekitike eschews a shot having worked into a promising position, choosing instead to find Mohamed Salah away to the right. The Egyptian rattles the legs of a blocking Crystal Palace defender.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 52 minutes

16:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Sharp football and another miss from Hugo Ekitike! Hands on head for the young forward, leaning back as he strikes and thus leaving Dean Henderson untested after some zippy passing down the left with Florian Wirtz right in the thick of things.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 50 minutes

Liverpool settle into their tempo, Cody Gakpo and Hugo Ekitike playing an extended one-two that puts the Frenchman in behind. Crystal Palace cover well to force him out and away.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 48 minutes

16:16 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A good header from Chris Richards having got up late to turn away a whipped corner from Florian Wirtz.

Crystal Palace attempt to counter but are hamstrung by an inadvertent intervention from referee Chris Kavanagh, who fells Daniel Munoz. Cynical, really.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 46 minutes

16:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

No changes at the interval for either side, though Crystal Palace were forced to bring on Will Hughes for an injured Daichi Kamada earlier.

Nearly 3-1! Hugo Ekitike should, really, be doing better, rising above an outsized Tyrick Mitchell but failing to hit the target. The offside call might have been tight but Ekitike will be disappointed with his header.

Second half...

16:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Out the players come again into the afternoon heat. Liverpool ready the legs again with a brief warm-up with a physio.

Video: Ekitike gives Liverpool the lead

16:05 , Lawrence Ostlere

Hugo Ekitike’s first Liverpool goal was a lovely finish, after combining with Florian Wirtz on the edge of the box:

'Liverpool deserve their lead'

15:59 , Lawrence Ostlere

Lawrence Ostlere at Wembley:

“Breathless stuff for about half an hour or so here at Wembley, before the effect of the August heat perhaps took its toll on the tempo and accuracy on display. Arne Slot left the pitch with his arms flapping, chuntering to himself about something or other, but he must be broadly happy with his new signings after goals for Ekitike and Frimpong and an assist for Wirtz.

“Liverpool played some excellent football, although they did look a little vulnerable to the counter-attack, particularly down their right side when Sarr ran into the space vacated by the adventurous Frimpong. There’s still plenty in this game for Palace, if they can take their chances.”

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 45 + 6 minutes

15:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mohamed Salah hasn’t been hugely involved at all so far - which might be a good sign for Liverpool, in some ways, given the fluency which they’ve found even without heavy input from their established star.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 45 + 4 minutes

15:52 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Liverpool have just lost a bit of their passing flow in the last little while, a few loose touches here and there capping their ability to threaten. Jeremie Frimpong contorts a half-volley clear of the crossbar.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 45 + 2 minutes

15:50 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Nearly! Oliver Glasner turns away with arms spread in frustration after an inserting Ismaila Sarr can’t quite get boot to ball having pierced Liverpool’s centre-halves. Daniel Munoz’s ball was just too far in front of him, with a clever nudge from Ibrahima Konate well timed, too.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 45 minutes

15:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Seven additional minutes, beefed up by that drinks break, of course. Still, seems a little generous for what is a glorified friendly, though I suppose silverware is on the line.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 42 minutes

15:46 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Ibrahima Konate is ticking after referee Chris Kavanagh brandishes a yellow card following a challenge on Jean-Philippe Mateta. On the replay, it’s tough to see why - a swipe away of the legs of the Crystal Palace forward with no contact on the ball.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 40 minutes

15:44 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Some of these Community Shield encounters can be pretty dull and dreary, so we must commend both teams for the manner in which they’ve approached this. Dean Henderson urges his back five to push higher after spraying a pass out of play - Palace never really looked liked they wanted to just sit in and be passive, though the timing of Hugo Ekitike’s opening goal may have dictated their approach.

Cody Gakpo manages to spin beyond Daniel Munoz having feigned short for the quick pass, but the Dutch forward is offside as the ball is eventually played his way.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 36 minutes

A half-chance for Will Hughes, a Daniel Munoz cross bouncing the substitute’s way having been meant for someone else. The height of the hop makes it tricky to keep down; Hughes cannot help but blaze over the bar.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 35 minutes

15:38 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A hurl into the penalty area is flicked on by Virgil van Dijk, but it’s Tyrick Mitchell’s clearing boot that meets it thereafter rather than a scoring one attached to a Liverpool leg.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 33 minutes

15:36 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A slight lull in the intensity as that helter-skelter first 15 minutes in searing heat perhaps take their toll. Both sides squander opportunities on the counter-attack soon enough, though, as a lively game resumes.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 30 minutes

15:33 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The suggestions are that Arne Slot may be toying with using Jeremie Frimpong further forward at times this season and you can see why, the Dutchman eager to get up his touchline at every opportunity. One knock back from a Dominik Szobszlai diagonal just evades Florian Wirtz on the edge of the area.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 29 minutes

15:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Off trudges Kamada. Bad news, potentially, with the new Premier League season six days away for Crystal Palace. Hughes is a far from inadequate replacement, of course, but Kamada was excellent last season.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 27 minutes

15:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Ibrahima Konate has a bit of an issue with his eye, prompting a couple of physios and Alisson Becker (whose medical qualifications I am unsure of) to rush over to attend to him.

He will, I think, be fine; Crystal Palace’s Daichi Kamada will not. The Japanese midfielder has gone to ground with what appears a muscular problem and Will Hughes is being readied.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool, 25 minutes

15:28 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Division among The Independent’s team at Wembley, then - they’ll hash out their disagreement during a pause in the action as the players take a drinks break on a very warm London day. Did Jeremie Frimpong mean it?

'Palace silenced by freakish finish'

15:26 , Lawrence Ostlere

Lawrence Ostlere at Wembley:

“That was bizarre – a cross, for me, although my colleague Richard Jolly thinks it might have been a deliberate shot so we’ll agree to disagree. The Palace fans around us were making a deafening racket in the minutes before Frimpong’s goal but it has gone a little quiet now…”

GOAL! Crystal Palace 1-2 LIVERPOOL (Jeremie Frimpong, 21 minutes)

15:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A slice of fortune for Jeremie Frimpong and Liverpool lead again!

Into a minute of applause to mark the No 20 of the late Diogo Jota the travelling Merseyside fans launch but they are soon breaking to celebrate thanks to an inadvertent second. Frimpong is simply trying to stand up a cross to the far stick and rather gets his attempt wrong, striking with the outside of his right boot rather than the inside. That, though, sends it spinning over Dean Henderson and arcing into the far corner.

Crystal Palace 1-1 Liverpool, 20 minutes

15:23 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A real chance for Tyrick Mitchell! The left-wing-back saunters in at the back post as if out for a Sunday stroll and there’s not a Liverpool player particularly near him as a cross comes to him at shin height. A bit of a skew of a finish, though, prevents him capitalising.

Crystal Palace 1-1 Liverpool, 19 minutes

Daniel Munoz marauds up the right wing, leaving Cody Gakpo trailing in his wake. It’s not his best ball at the end of it, but this is a contest being played with real pace and purpose.

GOAL! CRYSTAL PALACE 1-1 Liverpool (Jean-Philippe Mateta, 17 minutes)

15:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And Jean-Philippe Mateta will score!

A confident stride up to the ball and Alisson guesses wrong. Crystal Palace are level and their fans are bouncing to a familiar tune as last season’s top scorer strikes again.

PENALTY! Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool, 15 minutes

15:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Ismaila Sarr takes a tumble and Chris Kavanagh points to the penalty spot! Virgil van Dijk juts out a leg to try to halt Sarr in full flow, but once he’s not made contact with the ball, the Dutchman is in trouble.

Jean-Philippe Mateta will step up...

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool, 14 minutes

15:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Top stop from Dean Henderson! It’s sumptuous football from Liverpool, Hugo Ekitike with the deftest of touches to spring Florian Wirtz into space and then Mohamed Salah sent onwards still. An arriving Cody Gakpo at the far post can’t quite beat a sprawling Henderson and may have been offside, anyway - but promising signs for Liverpool with their two new forwards right amongst things.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool, 12 minutes

15:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Forward wander the large humans again for Crystal Palace as Tyrick Mitchell and Eberechi Eze stand over a free kick. It’s a bluff, though, Mitchell tapping the ball to his teammate and asking him to unleash a shot, which is deflected behind. The centre halves will delay their retreat to contest it.

Again, though, it’s a Liverpool head to it.

One sometimes feels like an early goal like that can really distort the atmosphere, neither set of supporters quite sure how to react - fans of the scoring side not wishing to get ahead of themselves, those who have conceded knowing there is still so long to go. Not so here - both seem to be in fine voice.

Liverpool fancy this. They are up and about in their press early, putting the squeeze on the Crystal Palace distributors. GOAL! Crystal Palace 0-1 LIVERPOOL (Hugo Ekitike, 4 minutes)

15:08 , Harry Latham-Coyle

What a way to announce your arrival! Hugo Ekitike fires Liverpool in front!

That’s what he can do. Liverpool’s new striker fires home quite brilliantly from 20 yards after linking up neatly with Florian Wirtz. Just enough of a shimmy to open up room past Chris Richards and in it skids low past Dean Henderson into the bottom corner. Some start.

Some of the Crystal Palace supporters behind one of the goals have snuck in some flares and are bearing a banner protesting against Uefa. Lively.

Liverpool have begun with Hugo Ekitike through the middle and Florian Wirtz roaming in behind. Mohamed Salah is on the ball early in his familiar right wing position, and Curtis Jones is the deepest of the midfield three with new dad Ryan Gravenberch absent.

Out the players come, the Mitre ball plucked from its perch by referee Chris Kavanagh. A glorious summer afternoon in north London.

Wreaths laid in memory of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva

Liverpool legend Ian Rush and Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish have laid wreaths alongside the Wembley pitch, paying tribute to the late Diogo Jota and Andre Silva in the first competitive Liverpool fixture since their forward’s passing. There will also be a silence observed before kick off.

Eberechi Eze hoping for another Wembley star-turn

There is an outside chance that Eberechi Eze is playing in a Crystal Palace shirt for the final time today, no deal yet agreed but Arsenal seemingly ready to test Palace’s resolve to keep their forward - and other clubs like Tottenham lurking, too. Having scored the winner in the cup final in May, can Eze show his quality at Wembley again?

'Atmosphere building at Wembley'

14:37 , Lawrence Ostlere at Wembley

Lawrence Ostlere at Wembley Stadium:

“Here at Wembley, 90,000 fans are steadily arriving to blazing sunshine, in this odd part of the summer when the Premier League returns before you feel it has any right to. There were plenty of ‘Champions 24/25’ shirts on display in both colours on the walk to the ground, and a feeling of optimism in the air after Liverpool and Palace enjoyed such successful seasons. I overheard a couple of Palace fans saying they’d love to win today and beat the best team in the country, but wouldn’t mind too much if they lost, which perhaps sums up how most supporters feel about the Community Shield. It should be a great atmosphere, and hopefully a game to match.”

Oliver Glasner insists looming Cas decision is no distraction

Crystal Palace will find out tomorrow if they are in the Europa League or the Conference League this season, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) set to make their ruling tomorrow on their appeal against Uefa’s decision to demote them over multi-club ownership rules. Oliver Glasner insists the squad will not be distracted by it.

“We had one meeting at the beginning of pre-season and said let’s focus on the things we can influence,” he tells TNT Sports. “We have no influence on the Uefa decision or the Cas decision. Of course tomorrow we will have the TV screens on waiting for the decision. We hope that we will be in the Europa League but if it is the Conference League we have to accept it and be ready to play in August.”

A reminder that there will be no extra time today - it’s straight to penalties if it ends level after 90 minutes. Welcome news for those involved in any capacity with another long old season ahead.

'Liverpool line-up looks formidable'

14:19 , Lawrence Ostlere

Lawrence Ostlere at Wembley:

“This Liverpool team looks formidable, despite the absence of Gravenberch. It will be fascinating to see how the new quartet fit in alongside the established players who delivered the title. Kerkez and Frimpong offer more pace and energy on the wings than the old Robertson-Alexander-Arnold axis, and Wirtz brings a whole new level of technical quality to the No 10 role.

“Palace have a couple of new signings on the bench in Benitez and Sosa, but the fact Glasner is playing the same XI who started the FA Cup final is indicative of a “passive” summer window, as he himself put it. Holding on to key players remains the key going into the new season.”

Team news - Crystal Palace

It’s a familiar looking Crystal Palace line-up - in fact, it’s the exact same XI deployed by Oliver Glasner in the FA Cup final at Wembley a few months back.

Crystal Palace XI: Henderson; Munoz, Richards, Lacroix, Guehi, Mitchell; Wharton, Kamada; Sarr, Mateta, Eze.

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Jones, Szboszlai; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike.

Would losing be a good omen?

How much does the Community Shield actually mean? Well, recent history suggests you are more likely to go on to win the Premier League title in the season it precedes if you lose the curtain-raiser, rather than if you win it. Only Manchester City (2018-19) have done the Shield/Prem double in the last 15 years, while five teams have finished runners-up at Wembley and then gone on to lift the trophy that matters come the end of the campaign - including Liverpool in 2019-20....
