Jurgen Klopp has warned Manchester City that they will not be able to get rid of Liverpool in this year’s title race.
Klopp’s side went within one point of Premier League leaders City by beating relegation-threatened Burnley 4-2 at Anfield.
Two goals each for Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané earned Liverpool a deserved win, despite them falling behind early on to an Ashley Westwood corner.
Johan Berg Gudmundsson added Burnley’s second in stoppage time, minutes before Mané competed the scoring.
Liverpool surrendered their lead at the top of the table by drawing last weekned’s Merseyside derby against Everton.
But Klopp insisted that confidence remains high at Anfield and saw Sunday’s win as proof of that.
“The message from today is that nobody gets rid of us if we play as we play today,” he said.
“We had the perfect mixture of fighting the opponent, fighting the circumstances and playing football. It was really good. I liked it.”
Klopp came in for criticism after Liverpool drew a blank at Goodison Park but he maintained that his side does not need to score goals to stay confident.
“We scored two weeks ago five goals [against Bournemouth] and then we didn’t score against Everton and everyone asks me about more offensive line-ups.
“I think next time if we don’t score you will ask that again. That’s how it is.
“We have no problem with confidence. We didn’t have a problem with confidence after the Everton game.
“You don’t have to think everything you write influences us. It’s not like that. Most of the things are not interesting to us, that’s the truth.
“You make a big fuss of us scoring five and then we are the best attacking side in the world. We could score nil and then we have an offensive problem.
“We have only to make sure that we stay in that really interesting competition on top of the table.”
