Liverpool vs Barcelona: Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain miss training

Liverpool look to have been hit by a further injury blow after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Virgil van Dijk missed training ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Barcelona.

Already short of Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, Jurgen Klopp is running out of options for tomorrow’s Champions League semi-final second leg.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was seen deep in conversation with club physios at half-time during Saturday’s win at Newcastle having seemingly felt an issue while warming up.

The Englishman has only recently returned from a long-term knee injury and was expected to be forced to deal with minor setbacks such as the hamstring issue he recently overcame.

However, the absence of Van Dijk comes as a major shock, with the talismanic centre-half having been available for much of the campaign.

Standard Sport understands both players will take part in bespoke sessions on Tuesday, though their absence from the main group throws up doubt about their availability.

Klopp is likely to restore Joel Matip to his back line tomorrow but must now decide whether he will be partnered by Dejan Lovren or Joe Gomez.

Meanwhile, Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi look set for rare opportunities to feature in the starting XI.
