Liverpool vs Arsenal LIVE: Boos for Alexander-Arnold as Gunners fight back in four-goal draw

Arsenal battled from two goals down to salvage a point at Premier League champions Liverpool as Trent Alexander-Arnold endured a mixed reception at Anfield and the hosts had a late winner disallowed.

Liverpool looked rampant in the first half and struck twice in 80 seconds through Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz to leave Arsenal trailing at half time and heading for another disappointing result after Wednesday’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-finals.

But Arsenal showed commendable spirit to claw themselves level in the second half, as Gabriel Martinelli headed in Leandro Trossard’s cross and Mikel Merino nodded in after Martin Odegaard hit the crossbar.

There were some boos as Alexander-Arnold, playing his first game at Anfield since announcing his departure at the end of the season, replaced Conor Bradley, while Arsenal had to play the final 10 minutes with 10 men after Merino was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge.

Liverpool thought they had won it when Andy Robertson scrambled in from a corner deep in stoppage time, but a foul was given for a Ibrahima Konate push on Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Arsenal held on to claim a morale-boosting point, even if their place in next season’s Champions League is still not secure with a visit from third-placed Newcastle, who are two points behind them, to come next week.

Slot does not regret playing Alexander-Arnold despite Reds fans’ boos

20:55 , Jamie Braidwood

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has no concerns about continuing to pick Trent Alexander-Arnold despite the defender being booed by his own fans in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

The right-back was targeted by a significant section of the Anfield crowd when he came on as a substitute after confirming on Monday he will not be extending his current deal with the newly-crowned Premier League champions when it expires this summer.

Alexander-Arnold, who is expected to join Real Madrid, was subjected to loud jeers as he was introduced as a 67th-minute substitute and that continued with most of his touches.

“The thing I consider is I want to win a game of football and if we think we can win with Trent, I owe it to his team-mates and to the fans, because they (Liverpool) hired me to win as many games of football as possible,” said Slot.

Angry Mikel Arteta quietens Liverpool taunts and saves Arsenal from greater humiliation

20:11 , Richard Jolly

After the mockery came the comeback. After the outlandish praise came the cutting criticism. After the boos for one of Liverpool’s finest players in recent years came the Arsenal equaliser.

An afternoon that threatened to be a hubristic embarrassment for Mikel Arteta instead produced a response which nudged Arsenal towards a place in next season’s Champions League. And yet he has rarely been more scathing, more obviously annoyed. A manager who left Paris with bullish bravado departed Liverpool lacerating his side.

Mikel Arteta disappointed with Arsenal standards in first half

19:19 , Jamie Braidwood

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal’s performance in the first half at Anfield was “unacceptable” despite their response to get a 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

“What we did in the first half is nowhere near the level so to do it after that is not acceptable. We reacted, great but it is unacceptable,” he tells Sky Sports.

"You don't have to be fighting for trophies and then you might win or lose it. That's the level you need.

"No-one can promise you win. You're going to have six, seven teams who pray to be in the Champions League next year and then you see.

"The action that we had after 20, 25 minutes. When the team plays like this, that's on me.

"It's not about the players. It's about we. No-one accepts those standards. It has to hurt a lot. Six times we played with 10 men this season. Look at what we can do when we are there."

Arne Slot responds to Alexander-Arnold boos

19:07 , Jamie Braidwood

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said on Friday that he would not tell supporters how to feel, while his team-mate and close friend Andy Robertson said it was “not nice” to see Alexander-Arnold booed.

"In general and life, the good thing about living in Europe, everyone can have their opinion. That's the same here in Liverpool,” Slot said afterwards. There was more applause for Alexander-Arnold at full time when he went to the Kop.

"There were people who were not so happy, there were people who were happy for him. They clapped for him. A few of them booed.

"Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Towards the end, a few of them got more and more positive. But for me, it's simple. I owe it to the team, to the fans, to play a team that can win a game of football.

"Trent showed it because he had two or three incredible balls. We were so close to winning it, partly because of him.

"For me, it's not that difficult. And for the fans, they can have the reaction they want. I will always back my players, the ones I lead and wear the red shirt."

A good day for Newcastle

18:43 , Jamie Braidwood

Newcastle were the big winners today, with Eddie Howe’s side the only team in the top five to pick up three points this weekend.

Their 2-0 win over Chelsea moved Newcastle to third, two points behind second-placed Arsenal. It sets up next weekend’s clash at the Emirates rather well.

Arsenal have lost all three games they have played against Newcastle this season.

Strange day for Alexander-Arnold

It appeared as if Alexander-Arnold received plenty of applause, too, at full-time as he went to the Kop and showed his appreciation.

Jamie Carragher on boos for Trent Alexander-Arnold: 'Not for me'

18:38 , Jamie Braidwood

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher reacts to the boos that greeted Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfield.

"That's the story of the game. That's what we will be talking about after the game and what will be on the the back pages of every newspaper.

"I'm surprised how many [booed]. When you’re in a crowd of 60,000, there’s no doubt there are a lot of unhappy people in Liverpool with the situation. I’ve said that’s understandable.

“For me, I don't believe any player putting on that red shirt who goes out to play for the club and win three points and to win trophies should be booed.

“I understand there’s a lot of ill-feeling. Some people outside of Liverpool don’t get that - I do. But booing one of your own players while they're playing is not for me.”

FULL TIME! Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

18:27 , Richard Jolly

A strange old game. A second 2-2 draw between these teams this season, which may show the difference between them has been Liverpool's consistency against the rest. A fine comeback from Arsenal. An awkward afternoon for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley, for different reasons. And Arsenal nudge closer to a a return to the Champions League - though they will be without the banned Mikel Merino against Newcastle next week.

FULL TIME! Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

18:27 , Jamie Braidwood

And that’s it! Good entertainment, a strange game. Neither side that happy but Arsenal can be pleased with their fight back. Liverpool don’t mind too much.

NO GOAL! Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

18:25 , Jamie Braidwood

90+6 mins: ROBERTSON HAS THE BALL IN THE NET BUT THE FLAG IS UP! LATE DRAMA!

From the corner, Van Dijk won a towering header, but there appears to be a foul behind him - I think from Konate pushing at Lewis-Skelly.

Robertson might have been offside anyway. The Scot turned in in front of the Kop after Raya saved from Van Dijk.

It’s disallowed.

Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

18:24 , Jamie Braidwood

90+5 mins: Surely not a smash and grab?! Odegaard races downfield as Arsenal counter. He goes for the shot himself but drags it wide!

Liverpool will have a late, late corner.

Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

18:23 , Jamie Braidwood

90+4 mins: Brilliant ball in from Alexander-Arnold! But it evades Jota and Nunez, who were sliding in at the back post.

Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

90+3 mins; There’s no space for Salah in the box to try and get a shot away. Liverpool come again...

Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

18:20 , Jamie Braidwood

90 mins: Five added minutes at Anfield! Arsenal are very much trying to see this out and get back down the road with a point.

Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

18:18 , Jamie Braidwood

88 mins: CHANCE! Salah’s cross is headed up but not out and it falls to Robertson at the back post. But the left back can’t control the volley and he puts it wide of the post.

Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

18:13 , Jamie Braidwood

84 mins: Liverpool are pushing for the late winner. Jota shoots wide on the counter as Liverpool looked to break. Harvey Elliott is on for Gravenberch for the final few minutes.

Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

18:11 , Jamie Braidwood

81 mins: Alexander-Arnold clips the free-kick wide. Again, some cheers and some boos.

RED CARD! Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

18:09 , Jamie Braidwood

79 min: Mikel Merino is off! The Arsenal midfielder is shown a second yellow card after being caught on the ball and lunging in on Szoboszlai. Nunez shot just wide but the referee comes back to show the second yellow and Arsenal will have to play the rest of this with 10 men.

Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

18:07 , Jamie Braidwood

77 mins: Two changes for Arsenal. Trossard looks to have picked up a knock and he goes off, along with White. Calafiori and Tierney are on.

While Jota replaces Nunez for Liverpool.

Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

18:02 , Richard Jolly

73 mins: A comeback that scarcely felt feasible at half-time. Arsenal nevertheless merit credit. Trossard has been excellent on the left. Alisson was forced to make a couple of fine saves even before pushing Martin Odegaard's shot on to the post, only for Mikel Merino to head in the rebound. Arsenal have shown some character here.

Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

18:02 , Jamie Braidwood

71 mins: Alexander-Arnold was playing Merino onside. The right back is being booed and cheered with every touch. It’s all quite strange.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal (MERINO 70')

17:59 , Jamie Braidwood

WOW! Arsenal are level! Odegaard unleashes a stunning strike that Alisson tips onto the post. But Merino follows in and nods into an empty net to get Arsenal back level. They have responded in style!

Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal

17:56 , Jamie Braidwood

66 mins: Trent Alexander-Arnold is coming on for Liverpool, along with Darwin Nunez and Alexis Mac Allister.

And there are boos for Alexander-Arnold. There’s some applause too. But it’s safe to say that’s a mixed reception.

Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal

17:54 , Jamie Braidwood

65 mins: How has that stayed out?! Arsenal got short from the corner and Saka’s clip to the back post looks certain to be headed in by Saliba. But Konate is there to block on the line.

Anyway, it looks like Saka was offside from the short corner.

Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal

17:53 , Jamie Braidwood

64 mins: Ooooooh. Big challenge from Bradley in the box to deny Martinelli, who threatens Liverpool again. The forward made a diagonal run to try and get onto the end of a Trossard pass. Bradley tracked it and slid to ground to win the challenge.

Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal

17:50 , Jamie Braidwood

61 mins: CLOSE! Trossard takes the free-kick low and towards the front post. It falls to Martinelli but his snapshot is straight at Alisson from six yards out.

Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal

17:49 , Jamie Braidwood

59 mins: Bradley is booked after barging into Lewis-Skelly, who had skipped past him to potentially reach the byline. It’s been a tough 15 minutes or so for Bradley and Alexander-Arnold is warming up.

Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal

17:43 , Jamie Braidwood

53 mins: Salah races away on the break but can’t set up Diaz in the box. Robertson’s cross is then cut out by Raya.

At the other end, Ben White gets past Robertson but hits his shot into the ground and Alisson saves.

Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal

17:41 , Jamie Braidwood

50 mins: Saka is alive in the box as he wriggles away from a challenge from Robertson. He tees up Trossard, who has to go to the edge of the box to get his shot away, and he can’t keep it down as it goes over the bar.

Good start to the second half from Arteta’s side.

Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal

17:38 , Richard Jolly

49 mins: Leandro Trossard has started the second half superbly, carving out two chances, with Gabriel Martinelli scoring the second. It wasn't a great couple of minutes for Conor Bradley, however, as his audition to take over as the first-choice right-back next season continues

GOAL! Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal (MARTINELLI 47')

17:36 , Jamie Braidwood

That’s the response Arsenal wanted! Bradley stands off Trossard and invites the cross. Martinelli heads in after taking up the position in between Van Dijk and Konate!

Martinelli strikes again against Liverpool.

Liverpool 2-0 Arsenal

45 mins: We’re back underway. A big half for Arsenal, as you can imagine what they talking points will be if this gets any worse...

17:19 , Jamie Braidwood

The champions have turned up at Anfield and lead the runners-up 2-0 at the break.

Liverpool 2-0 Arsenal

17:18 , Jamie Braidwood

45+1 mins: We’re into three minutes added time. Arsenal look to hit back as Martinelli gets some space. But Van Dijk is there to clear at the front post.

Liverpool 2-0 Arsenal

17:13 , Richard Jolly

42 mins: Arsenal have rarely looked this open. Part of it may be down to the absences of Declan Rice and Gabriel Magalhaes, or exhaustion after their efforts in Paris, or the blow to morale of their Champions League exit. But this does feel a game with the makings of a rout.

Liverpool 2-0 Arsenal

17:12 , Jamie Braidwood

40 mins: We’re back underway. Odegaard tries to work some room in the box for a shot but Liverpool’s structure is strong and Konate blocks.

The Reds then race away, with Salah leading the charge again. He looks for Jones at the front post but Arsenal can clear.

Liverpool 2-0 Arsenal

17:08 , Jamie Braidwood

37 mins: Luis Diaz has been left bloodied by a challenge from Partey, which appeared accidental.

But it brings a stoppage and some respite for Arsenal.

Liverpool 2-0 Arsenal

17:04 , Jamie Braidwood

33 mins: ‘One Conor Bradley’ cries the Kop as Merino takes out the right back and picks up a booking. Arsenal looking quite frustrated, and a touch off it.

Liverpool 2-0 Arsenal

17:01 , Jamie Braidwood

29 mins: Saka flashes a shot over the bar in front of the Kop. At the other end, Konate drives Liverpool forward and plays through Bradley, who kept going with him. Bradley looked to set up Diaz but he was challenged by White at the front post. Bradley was offside, but may have been on.

Liverpool 2-0 Arsenal

16:57 , Richard Jolly

27 mins: Arsenal have drawn on their last three trips to Anfield but, after two goals in two minutes, this is threatening to be a repeat of other relatively recent scorelines here. Liverpool won 4-0 and 5-1 in the Jurgen Klopp years and whereas Mikel Arteta had made Arsenal more solid, they have looked very open here.

Liverpool 2-0 Arsenal

16:55 , Jamie Braidwood

23 mins: The warning signs are flashing for Arsenal. There is danger everywhere.

And it could be 3-0. Raya makes a brilliant stop to his right to keep out a Jones shot that was heading in.

WOWWWW TWO IN A MINUTE FOR LIVERPOOL!

Salah releases Szoboszlai with a stunning pass that splits the defence. The midfielder squares for Diaz to double Liverpool’s lead.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Arsenal (GAKPO 20')

16:50 , Jamie Braidwood

The champions lead at Anfield!

Cody Gakpo is the scorer, and there is relief for him after he missed the chance to set up Salah for an open goal moment before.

The goal comes down to Robertson, who is alive when Arsenal are sleeping. He receives the quick thrown-in and crosses at Gakpo, who nods in.

Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal

16:49 , Richard Jolly

18 mins: A lively start, with glorious chances spurned by Bukayo Saka and Luis Diaz, that has also been notable for the reception to two Liverpool right-backs. There were a few boos when the name of the departing Trent Alexander-Arnold was announced and a much louder chant of "one Conor Bradley" a few minutes later.

Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal

16:46 , Jamie Braidwood

15 mins: Big let off for Curtis Jones! Thomas Partey catches the Liverpool man with the ball in his own box, but he can’t set up Trossard in time. Konate makes the block and Liverpool can clear.

Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal

16:44 , Jamie Braidwood

12 mins: So two big chances for both teams early on. Not bad early action for what is a dead-rubber. Martin Odegaard needs a new shirt after somehow managing to tear his down the middle.

Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal

16:39 , Jamie Braidwood

7 mins: What a save! But how has Diaz not scored?!

Liverpool cut through Arsenal as Jones plays it wide to Salah and he tees up Diaz in the box. It’s one-v-one but Diaz shoots down the middle and Raya saves with his feet.

Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal

5 mins: The guard of honour.

3 mins: BIG CHANCE for Arsenal! The Gunners beat Liverpool’s offside trap and Saka is through on goal, but he puts it wide from five yards in front of the Kop!

Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal

16:33 , Jamie Braidwood

2 mins: Conor Bradley thundered into a challenge on Bukayo Saka in the opening minute and then catches Merino as they contested a high ball, but it wasn’t intentional.

Underway at Anfield!

Here comes the guard of honour

16:27 , Jamie Braidwood

Pantomime boos as Arsenal came onto the Anfield pitch first.

“Championees, championees” is the cry as Virgil van Dijk leads out Liverpool.

The Arsenal players applaud as they form the guard of honour, which must hurt after falling just short in the last two seasons.

Premier League full-times

16:16 , Jamie Braidwood

Nottingham Forest 2-2 Leicester

Manchester United 0-2 West Ham

Tottenham 0-2 Crystal Palace

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea

A blow for Nottingham Forest as Leicester equalise late on. More misery for Manchester United and Tottenham in the Premier League, as they drop to 16th and 17th ahead of the Europa League final.

Those results mean there’s less pressure on Arsenal’s necks.

Liverpool vs Arsenal

16:10 , Richard Jolly, at Anfield

For much of the season, this looked a potential title decider, or a last chance for Arsenal to halt Liverpool.

Instead, Arsenal face a battle to hold on to second place. A win today would at least guarantee Champions League football next season for the team Mikel Arteta has called the best in this season's Champions League. But Arsenal are without the injured Declan Rice.

Liverpool, after resting plenty of players last week against Chelsea, are almost at full strength, though Alexis Mac Allister and Trent Alexander-Arnold begin on the bench.

Arsenal's unbeaten run at rivals

Arsenal’s last Premier League defeat to a traditional “big six” rival - ie, Liverpool, Man City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham - was at the Etihad in April 2023.

Arsenal have drawn their last three visits to Anfield in the Premier League and last lost against Liverpool away from home in November 2021 (4-0).

Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal are 'very close' to achieving true success

15:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It’s no doubt been a difficult week for Mikel Arteta, the positive direction of his project still obvious but another season without a major trophy coming and going. He insisted on Friday that the breakthrough will come for Arsenal.

"I have so much to achieve and that is what drives me every day,” Arteta said. “The people and the staff and the players drive me every single day.

"If there is somebody that has raised the standard and the expectation the highest, it has been me. Because I have been demanding and expecting much more, and after that much more, and after that much more.

"For me it is the only way to do it, for everybody to have really high standards and demands.

"We are very, very close to achieving it. I understand the disappointment and the criticism. It is all part of it.

"At the end there is one winner and the rest of them aren't going to win, so they need to reinvent themselves and do better and that is part of the cycle."

Declan Rice injured as Ben White returns

Arne Slot confirmed that Conor Bradley would be starting on Friday and the right back takes the place of Trent Alexander-Arnold after recovering from injury. 15:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot insists Conor Bradley should not be compared to Trent Alexander-Arnold as the 21-year-old is given a chance to stake his claim to become first-choice right-back.

Alexander-Arnold’s pending departure at the end of the season, having chosen not to extend his contract, leaves the club with only one recognised specialist in the position.

Slot has already intimated buying in a replacement will not be easy for the Premier League champions because of the transfer fee involved but he also does not want to put too much pressure on the youngster.

He has, however, decided to start him against Arsenal as the Northern Ireland international was not fully fit last weekend.

Mikel Arteta has said he wants the pain of performing a guard of honour for Liverpool to act as Arsenal’s motivation to beat their rivals to the Premier League title next season.

Arteta’s players will stand and applaud the champions ahead of today’s fixture at Anfield, only four days after they were eliminated from the Champions League.

Arsenal’s failure to see off Paris Saint Germain in their semi-final tie means their five-year wait for silverware will be extended into another campaign.
