Liverpool view on Manchester United sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as 'secret weapon' claim made

Manchester United's woes continued at the weekend as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to local rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Two weeks before, they were also humbled at home by Liverpool, who trashed United 5-0.

Pressure is still mounting on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as his side currently sit sixth in the table and nine points behind leaders Chelsea.

However, despite the poor run of form and increased speculation, the club look set to stick with the United boss for the time being as they're reluctant to part ways with Solskjaer without a contingency plan in place, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.

A number of clubs in the Premier League have taken the steps to transform their fortunes, Norwich City and Aston Villa both parted ways with their managers this weekend, Tottenham and Newcastle also have in recent weeks.

Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy detailed how rival clubs see Solskjaer as their 'secret weapon' and a change is needed at Old Trafford.

He said: "If they want to compete with the big boys now – Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea – they need to change the manager.

"It has got to the stage now, sadly, where opposing fans see Solskjaer as their secret weapon.

"They want him to stay more than United supporters.”

And the fact that chants of 'Ole's at the wheel' have rung out inside grounds from Liverpool, City and Leeds fans supports his claim.

Solskjaer took charge of United in December 2018 as caretaker manager and was given the permanent position a few months later.

Now, almost three years into his tenure, little progress seems to have been made.

In 2015, Liverpool made the difficult decision to part ways with Brendan Rodgers after he nearly took the club to their first Premier League title in almost 30 years back in 2013/14.

However, with no trophy in his first three years on Merseyside, Rodgers was sacked and Klopp was brought in. The decision to appoint the German has more than paid off for the Reds.

Chelsea and Manchester City have also parted ways with struggling managers showing little room for sentiment, as Chelsea brought in Thomas Tuchel shortly after sacking Frank Lampard midway through last season - they went on to win the Champions League.

Manuel Pellegrini was replaced by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City in 2016 and the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss has taken them to three Premier League titles since his arrival.
