Liverpool venue named one of England's most distinctive pubs

A Liverpool venue has been named among the most distinctive pubs in England.

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms was named among England’s 33 most distinctive pubs in a new book celebrating the great British boozer. Great Pubs of England by Horst A. Friedrichs and Stuart Husband explores the best of England's illustrious pub culture.

Whittling it down to 33 of the country’s finest and most distinctive inns, the book takes an in-depth look at pubs in every corner of the country, featuring photography by acclaimed photographer Horst and text by seasoned journalist Stuart. Among the 33 are pubs in London, Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds and more.

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms - or The Phil as it's affectionally known - sits on the corner of Hope Street and Hardman Street. The pub was built for brewer Robert Cain between 1898 and 1900 by Liverpool architect Walter W. Thomas.

The Victorian pub was Grade II* listed in 1966 and became Grade I listed in 2020. The stunning pub features elaborate carvings, Art Nouveau elements including metal gates by the architect and designer Henry Bloomfield Bare, and stone sculptures of musicians and musical instruments in low relief.

There are several architectural references to music and musicians found on the pub’s exterior and within its walls. These include the beautiful stained glass window in the Liszt side room (which sits opposite the Brahms room) featuring St Cecilia, the patroness of musicians.

The Phil is open 11am - 11pm Monday to Thursday, 11am - 12pm Friday to Saturday, and 11am - 10.30pm on Sundays. The pub also offers delivery and takeaway throughout the week.
