Arne Slot promises Liverpool will ‘fight on’ after humiliating Champions League defeat

Arne Slot promised he would “fight on” at Liverpool and confirmed he had spoken to the club’s hierarchy on Thursday following a run of nine defeats in 12 games - the club’s worst spell of results since 1954.

Slot admitted he was in “shock” after Wednesday night’s 4-1 humiliation against PSV Eindhoven at Anfield, which was their third successive loss by three goals or more, following the 3-0 defeats to Nottingham Forest and Manchester City in the Premier League.

But the Dutch coach insisted that he still felt the “trust” of the club’s director of football Richard Hughes and FSG’s CEO Michael Edwards, following a record £450m spending spree in the summer, and confirmed they have “had the same conversations that we've had since I got here”.

Ahead of Sunday’s trip to West Ham in the Premier League, which has turned into a pressure match for the Liverpool boss as he attempts to turn the club’s unravelling season around, Slot declared: "In the end, it's about doing what this club is about. Keep fighting no matter how difficult it is.”

'I’m past being angry inside' - Curtis Jones on Liverpool form

18:20 , Mike Jones

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones summed up the frustration around Anfield after the Reds fell to their ninth defeat in 12 games in the 4-1 loss to PSV

"I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I don’t. I’m saying that to everybody. It’s just unacceptable,” Jones said to Irish broadcaster RTE.

"I don’t even have to wait to think about it. I’m past being angry inside. I’m at the point now where I just don’t have the words.

"It’s hard because I’m playing for the team I support. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen this club all my life.

"In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team going through a period like this with results like these.”

Steven Gerrard on 'vulnerable' Liverpool's dismal run of form

Liverpool legend Steve Gerrard said the Reds are not in a “crisis” yet but called on Arne Slot to come up with solutions to the issues in the team to halt their worrying slide.

"No it’s not [acceptable]," he told TNT Sports. "They’re conceding too many goals, they’re so vulnerable in transition.

"Crisis is a very strong word and disrespectful to the players and manager who have served this football club," he said.

“I wouldn't use that word but this team is on a terrible run, they just keep bleeding.

"They're wide open and unless the manager can find a solution it's going to continue."

Arne Slot responds to Liverpool sack speculation after ‘shock’ of worst run for 70 years

17:40 , Mike Jones

Arne Slot has responded to speculation that he will soon be facing the sack as Liverpool boss and admits he is in shock at the dismal run the club are on – their worst for more than 70 years.

“It is a shock for everyone, for the players, for me, this is very, very unexpected,” Slot said. “I am feeling safe, I am okay though.

“It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory but if you are working as a coach and not doing well then it is normal that questions are asked.”

Arne Slot on what Liverpool need to do to stop the rot

17:20 , Mike Jones

Arne Slot accepted that Liverpool feel vulnerable when they concede, hinting at a frailty in the Premier League champions.

“The only way to go is to go through it now,” Slot told TNT Sports. “And what I mean by that is we just have to face what we are in and fight really hard.

“It will be nice if we don't, every time, have this knack of conceding a goal, because it's not only conceding a goal, it's the feeling, at least the feeling I have and I think the players will probably have the same, and our fans as well.

“After 45 minutes, you don't expect it to be 1-1, you expect to be up. Instead of being up five or 10 minutes after half-time, again we conceded. That's hard.”

Arne Slot admits to bleak mood inside the Liverpool dressing room

17:00 , Mike Jones

Arne Slot admitted the mood is bleak at Liverpool after their latest defeat, with the Dutch coach expressing his frustration at his side’s defensive form that has seen them conceded 10 goals in their last three games.

“The emotions are very negative and disappointing,” Slot admitted.

“I was also hoping and expecting a better performance, because the performance was far from what we are used to, even if we’re losing, our performances have been better.”

'We're in the sh**': Curtis Jones on Liverpool's form

16:40 , Mike Jones

“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team going through a period like this with results like these,” Curtis Jones told RTE.

“But at the end of the day, we still have that badge on our chest. And until that badge is gone, we’re always going to fight.

"We’re going to try and get this team back to where it needs to be, show everyone again what this club is about and why people call it the best team in the world.

“But right now, we’re in the s*** and it needs to change."

Arne Slot vows to ‘keep fighting no matter how difficult’ in hopes of changing Liverpool’s form

16:09 , Mike Jones

Arne Slot has promised that his Liverpool team will ‘keep fighting no matter how difficult’ it gets for them to turnaround their shocking run of form.

The Reds have lost nine of their last 12 fixtures across all competitions in what is the worst run of form for the club since 1904.

Liverpool were beaten 4-1 by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday night in what was their third defeat in a row where they conceded three or more goals.

Arne Slot vows to ‘keep fighting’ in hopes of changing Liverpool’s form

Will Slot make changes for West Ham?

15:54 , Mike Jones

"Everyone trains with us every single day, and they can prove themselves in that moment,” Slot said.

"It's always a balance. There was a period where I lost, and I made a few changes and people complained that I made too many changes.

"Of course, I consider [changes] but I can not tell you the end decision of what I've considered for Sunday."

Slot on Jones' comments

15:50 , Mike Jones

Slot also praised Curtis Jones’ comments that he made after the PSV defeat about being past anger and wanting to get stuck into the matches.

"Really good if you bring it to the game, the players at least tried to do it yesterday,” Slot added.

“The running data was very high, but it didn't lead to anything in terms of results.

"I think what he is saying is that if we can bring this to the game as a team the minimum we expect is that we fight.

“I think we are on the same page when it comes to how we want to get out of this situation."

Liverpool missing their chances

15:47 , Mike Jones

Over the last three matches Liverpool have created a big xG score but haven’t managed to convert that into goals.

What that shows is they’re creating chances but aren’t taking them and Slot was asked how he felt about that.

“Frustration,” he replied.

“xG doesn’t always tell you the right story because it’s also important when you get those chances. After you concede you tend to be more open than when you’re one or two-nil up.

“I think when we were one-nil up against Real Madrid and Villa we hardly concede a chance. That has happened in many more of our games when we are leading.

“When you’re chasing the game you concede more but I think a large part of the xG that we create is in the first part of the game as well. We don’t reward ourselves for good parts or phases in the game and this is what is best shown in our xG created.

“I didn’t need xG to know we missed quite a lot of chances.”

Slot on Nuno Espirito Santo and facing West Ham

15:43 , Mike Jones

The Liverpool boss also gave his thoughts on the next match which is against West Ham this Sunday.

He said: “[Nuno Espirito Santo] is having an impact on their results. He’s done so well everywhere he’s been here in England. He did well at Forest and now he’s doing well at West Ham again. He’s proven to be a difficult manager to play against, not just for me but for everyone.

“He always has a good gameplan, they’re a tough team to beat at the moment West Ham which might not have been the case at the beginning of the season. We face them now and that’s why we definitely need to be ready for a challenge.

“They know, after our recent run of results, it’s probably different to play against us now more than it was three or four months ago.”

Poor form not easy for players

15:39 , Mike Jones

Arne Slot explained that being in a poor run of form isn’t easy for his players especially when they’re trying to turn things around.

“What it does for me is I can just do the same but I don’t have to play, maybe my job is a little bit easier,” he said.

“I think it is hard for every player if you are in a bad run of results, if you go down immediately after three minutes then play a good first half, and then 10 minutes half-time again you concede. We get knock after knock after knock, which is hard.

“That’s why I keep saying we have to keep fighting. That’s what we did so well last season and that’s what this club is about for so many years.

“That’s the minimum that I and we expect over 90 minutes but it’s not easy when you get knock after knock after knock.”

Slot provides injury updates

15:35 , Mike Jones

On the state of his squad Slot explained: "Alisson trained again today with the team, we hope and expect he is available at the weekend.

"[Florian] Wirtz will have his final day of rehab tomorrow, if all goes well he can train with he team on Saturday.

"[Hugo] Ekitike, today was a recovery day but they don't expect it has to be a big issue."

Slot on mounting pressure

15:31 , Mike Jones

The Liverpool boss said: “There is a lot of pressure if you work or play at a top club, and even more so if you start losing more games than this club, or these players, or this manager is used to.

“There’s always pressure but there was a lot of pressure last season as well on us to win the league and now it is a different kind of pressure because we’ve lost so many games.

Liverpool must reward themselves when they play well

15:17 , Mike Jones

Arne Slot was asked what he can do differently to stop the decline in Liverpool’s form.

He says that club will keep fighting but must also focus on the parts they do well in matches.

"That's not so easy to say. It's normal to reflect on a game with decisions you have made. Maybe you do it a little bit more if you lose,” Slot said.

"In the end, it's about doing what this club is about. Keep fighting no matter how difficult it is. It would be nice if we reward ourselves in the moments we play well.

"People are focused on the parts we don't play well but there are large parts where we do play well."

Ekitike a doubt for West Ham game

15:13 , Mike Jones

Moving on to injury news, Huge Ekitike picked up a knock last night though Slot confirmed that the injury ‘shouldn’t be a big issue’.

However, the Liverpool boss refused to confirm or deny whether Ekitike could be fit for this weekend’s match with West Ham.

That leaves the forward’s inclusion a doubt for Sunday’s fixture.

Slot has no anger towards individual players

15:11 , Mike Jones

Arne Slot was asked if he held any anger towards his players over recent results and he was firm in his response.

"Not at all. I do agree that our standards have not been of the standards we are used to. We think we can play better,” he said.

"Last season when we did really well, there was focus on individuals and I said we should focus on the team. If the opposite is happening, we should also look at the team and not individuals."

Has Slot spoken to Liverpool's owners?

15:09 , Mike Jones

Following the defeat to PSV last night, Arne Slot’s press conference begins with the manager being asked if he’s spoken to the owernship since last night.

He replied: “We've had the same conversations that we've had since I got here. We fight on.

“We try to improve, but the conversations have been the same as they have been for the last one and a half years."

“We fight on and try to improve. The conversations have been the same.”

Arne Slot’s press conference has begun and he starts by saying the conversations behind the scenes are the same as have been happening throughout the season.

He was also adamant that Liverpool would ‘fight’ to change their current fortunes.

Liverpool's poor run

15:03 , Mike Jones

Liverpool have only managed to win three points from the last 21 available in the Premier League.

They won their first five league matches of the season but have only one win the last seven games.

That run has dropped them down to 12th in the table.

Arne Slot press conference

15:01 , Mike Jones

We’re just waiting for Arne Slot to head into the press room ahead of speaking to media about this weekend’s clash with West Ham.

Slot is expected to be asked questions about his future despite winning the Premier League with Liverpool just six months ago.

Liverpool must do 'hard yards'

14:55 , Mike Jones

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock believes there is a lack of intensity in Liverpool’s recent performances and that the players aren't putting in the "hard yards" on the pitch.

"The hard yards aren't being done by Liverpool at the moment,” Warnock said.

“They aren't recovering into positions enough and that's why they are suffering so much on counter attacks."

Can Liverpool turn their form around?

14:50 , Mike Jones

Things in football are quite fickle. Liverpool are in a bad spell and have lost nine of their last 12 matches.

Pressure has mounted but should they go on a successful run of games this form will be seen as a blip.

Their next three fixtures are all in the Premier League where they’ll face West Ham, Sunderland and Leeds.

Three wins from those games and the momentum will be with them when they welcome Inter Milan in the Champions League on December ninth.

Arne Slot will know this and his job is to make sure Liverpool can pull off this turnaround in form.

Salah’s legs have gone and Van Dijk is not the same player, Carragher claims

14:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are showing their age this season and has claimed their “legs have gone” amid a run of nine defeats in 12 games.

Salah, 33, and skipper Van Dijk, 34, signed new contracts at Liverpool after leading the Reds to their second Premier League title in five years but Carragher said they have struggled this season and urged others in the team to step up.

“You're watching Van Dijk now, not the same player, and Salah looks like his legs have gone,” Carragher said on CBS Sports.

“I don't like criticising them on the pitch, because they're absolutely legendary what they've done, and the legs have just gone, especially with Salah.

"Van Dijk now can't help other players. He needs help himself.”

Arne Slot responds to Liverpool sack speculation after ‘shock’ of worst run for 70 years

12:45 , Richard Jolly

Arne Slot has responded to speculation that he will soon be facing the sack as Liverpool boss and admits he is in shock at the dismal run the club are on – their worst for more than 70 years.

If things looked bleak after a harrowing 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest at the weekend, they only got worse when PSV came to town on Wednesday evening in the Champions League and dished out a 4-1 Anfield humiliation.

Liverpool were overrun by their Dutch opponents as they slipped to another defeat with barely a whimper – a ninth loss in their past 12 matches to ensure the club’s worst 12-game stretch since the 1953-54 season when, for context, Winston Churchill was the UK’s prime minister.

Does Arne Slot have the answers to turn Liverpool's season around?

11:45 , Richard Jolly

There has been too little evidence in the last two months that he does. Over his reign, it is worth noting that he still has the highest win percentage of any Liverpool manager; even if he did not win any of the next eight, it would still be above Bob Paisley’s.

Jurgen Klopp always knew that Champions League qualification had a huge financial importance for Liverpool and they are currently 12th in the Premier League.

It is a status symbol, a barometer of what can be achieved when the title is gone. Last autumn Pep Guardiola had his own run of nine losses in 12; those with any understanding of Manchester City never expected him to be sacked and nor should he have been. Guardiola salvaged third place from the season. Could Slot do something similar?

What are some of Liverpool's problems?

11:15 , Richard Jolly

More goals conceded because of set-pieces, counter-attacks and individual errors, more when they looked ragged when they chased a game....

Liverpool have had further evidence that Mohamed Salah’s inability to track back is a problem, that Ibrahima Konate is in awful form and that, rather than Alexander Isak, they really should have bought Marc Guehi on deadline day and, if Slot does not trust him, sold Joe Gomez.

Meanwhile, Isak is no nearer match fitness and Liverpool are playing with 10 men whenever the £125m man is on the pitch. Slot still regards last season’s midfield as a comfort blanket but even when Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai are reunited, that is no guarantee against chastening defeats.

Left-back has been a problem position for nearly all of the season – Steven Gerrard’s caustic observation that Milos Kerkez spent most of the PSV game out of position rang sadly true – and right-back for swathes of it.

Can Arne Slot save his job from the wreckage of Liverpool’s season?

Liverpool’s latest chastening defeat at Anfield, losing 4-1 to PSV in the Champions League, means the club hierarchy has no choice but to consider whether the manager is still right for the job.

'Liverpool are not a sacking club' - Carragher

10:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Jamie Carragher has said Arne Slot’s position is “untenable” just yet but admitted that a lot of supporters will be feeling that the manager’s future is at risk amid their worst run of results in more than 70 years.

He told CBS Sports: “Liverpool are different from almost every club in European football, where the manager is the king, the managers get time. Liverpool have never sacked a manager who's won the league. Never, in history. After a few years they've gone, they've resigned.

"I've always been in the camp of you stick with the manager, because I'm angry with the players, I'm really angry with the players. But it does get to a stage with any manager at any club where I always use this word, untenable, where it almost feels like it can't go on any longer.

"I'm not quite there yet personally, in terms of the manager, but I know a lot of supporters will be."

Arne Slot confident he has the backing of Liverpool bosses

09:43 , Jamie Braidwood

Arne Slot said after last night’s defeat to PSV that he still feels the “trust” of his Liverpool bosses, including sporting director Richard Hughes.

"They are helpful to me, to the team,” Slot said. “We do have those conversations. They don't call me every second to say they still trust me. When we do have those conversations, I feel the trust. I haven't spoken to them after this game yet; we will see.”

He added: "I have been feeling safe. I have a lot of support from above. It would be nice if I could turn it around and produce a victory. But [the noise] is part and parcel of being a coach if you are not doing well."

What's next for Liverpool?

09:20 , Jamie Braidwood

After falling to a third defeat in a row, Liverpool will travel to a West Ham side who are now unbeaten in three under Nuno Espirito Santo.

West Ham remain in 17th in the Premier League, though, and Sunday’s clash will be a fixture that champions Liverpool should be expected to win.

Arne Slot will be appearing at his pre-match press conference at 3pm this afternoon, where he is set to face questions about his team’s run of form as well as scrutiny over his future.

No way out for crisis-ridden Liverpool as PSV run rampant in Anfield humiliation

09:06 , Richard Jolly

Arne Slot’s excellence against Dutch clubs propelled him to Liverpool. Now it is a sign of how everything seems to be going wrong for Slot that even that prowess appears to have deserted him, that a humiliation at the hands of a club from his homeland prompted him to admit it is normal to wonder if he can remain at Anfield.

As Peter Bosz was the Dutch master in the dugout, adding the scalp of the champions of England to their Italian counterparts, scarcely believably, Liverpool suffered a ninth defeat in 12 games, and they did not just lose. They were hammered in historic fashion by PSV Eindhoven.

Twelfth in the Premier League, 13th in the Champions League, hit for four by PSV, this is crisis time for Slot and Liverpool. “It is a shock for everyone, for the players, for me, this is very unexpected,” he said.

To add to Liverpool’s list of headaches, Hugo Ekitike was replaced early in the second half due to injury and Arne Slot has confirmed that he was struggling with his back.

"Especially at the start of the second half, I constantly felt, 'What's wrong with Hugo?' It felt as if he couldn't move as he did [in] the first half. So, that's why our press was, I think, also a little bit off.

"And he just told me that in the first five to 10 minutes of the first half he already felt his back too much. That's also why he had to go out."

“It is a shock for everyone, for the players, for me, this is very, very unexpected,” Slot said. “I am feeling safe, I am okay though.

Arne Slot also weighs in on Van Dijk’s handball that led to the penalty, which kicked off the whole disaster.

He says: “I think he [Van Dijk] got a little push.

“That push unbalanced him, that's why he raised his arm and made the handball.

“I don't think the VAR will ever overturn a small push like that.”

'The only way is through' - Arne Slot

What’s the solution? Slot continues: “The only way to go is to go through it now. And what I mean by that is we just have to face what we are in and fight really hard.

'Another big loss' - Arne Slot

“It's hard to take,” the boss continus.

“After we conceded the first one, we saw the reaction I want to see - and it's not easy because we lost at the weekend, big loss, and then, after six minutes, went 1-0 down.

“The mentality I saw afterwards was as you are hoping it to be, but it's not always easy if you've had so many disappointments.

“The end result is 4-1 and that's another big loss.”

'I don't think anyone would have expected us to lose 4-1' - Arne Slot

Wednesday 26 November 2025 22:41 , Flo Clifford

Arne Slot speaks to TNT Sports. He says: “The last weeks, it's the same question every time. The emotion is all very negative and disappointing.

“I have to be, I want to be positive about the reaction of the players after we went 1-0 down because, until half-time, we played a very good game.

“After another disappointment, we came back into the game. I think we had enough chances, maybe, to go 2-1 up, and at half-time, I don't think anyone would have expected us to lose this game 4-1.”
