Liverpool v Manchester United sets new Sky Sports TV record

It may not have produced any goals but Liverpool v Manchester United set a new Sky Sports record on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp's men drew 0-0 with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side in their crunch Premier League clash at Anfield.

The result saw Liverpool remain three points behind leaders United in their bid to retain the title.

The Reds ended the day in fourth place, a point behind Manchester City and Leicester City.

Liverpool v United was billed as the biggest game of the season so far - and it drew the biggest television audience for any event only shown on Sky Sports, as reported by The Mirror.

Sky have confirmed that an average of 4.5million viewers tuned in to watch the fixture, with a peak at 4.8m in the final five minutes of the match.

That meant it surpassed the previous high of 4.049m viewers for the 2012 Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.

It also becomes the second most viewed Premier League game ever in terms of average audience - second only to the 4.94m viewers who watched the Merseyside derby

between Everton and Liverpool in June.

That match at Goodison Park - which also ended goalless - was broadcast simultaneously on Sky One and was free-to-air on Pick TV.

Sunday's game also achieved a 25% share of the total TV audience at the time, with 41% of Sky customers who were watching TV tuning in.

Sky says the average audience ranks higher than those achieved for live Premier League matches shown on terrestrial television over the past two seasons.

The Liverpool v United game - like all others in the top flight - was played behind closed doors due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
