Mohamed Salah made an assist in what could have been his final appearance for Liverpool as the hosts won a Premier League match at Anfield for the first time in six weeks by beating Brighton 2-0.
Hugo Ekitike scored twice to win the points for Liverpool but all eyes were on Salah, who was making his first appearance since his explosive interview at Leeds last weekend. The Egyptian was cheered onto the pitch by Liverpool’s fans and his name rang around Anfield after he set up Ekitike’s second goal from a corner.
Head coach Arne Slot decided to recall the star forward after holding further discussions on Friday and although he was named on the bench, Salah was introduced midway through the first half after an injury to Joe Gomez. At full-time, Salah applauded the Liverpool fans and appeared to thank them for their support. But there was no wave of farewell.
Salah will now depart for the Africa Cup of Nations and he will be away with Egypt for several weeks. He said during his interview at Leeds that he had told his family to come to the Brighton match in case it is his last for the club, with the transfer window opening in January.
But Slot has insisted he has “no issue to resolve” now with Salah after bringing him back into the team, suggesting their problems are in the past and that he will treat Salah the same as anyone else in his squad.

Arne Slot confident Florian Wirtz is getting 'better and better'
19:16 , Jamie BraidwoodStill no Premier League goal for Florian Wirtz but this was another bright display in a reshaped system for Liverpool
Slot told Match of the Day: “I think he is also one of the players I say when he is getting better and better. He is getting stronger and stronger. All the hard work the players have put in over the last few months is paying off.”

Arne Slot on Hugo Ekitike: I thought 'wow'
18:56 , Jamie BraidwoodArne Slot was impressed with Hugo Ekitike’s impact today, with the 23-year-old scoring twice for the second Premier League game in a row and earning Liverpool all three points in the win over Brighton.
He told Match of the Day. “The goals he scored were good goals and there were other moments I thought ‘wow’. That is of course why we wanted him, apart from the goals. It is good to see he and others who came in the summer are making progress."
Slot also told Sky Sports: “I think I can see the players we have brought in this season have progressed. They are getting stronger and stronger and fitter and fitter. I can see them getting stronger in the duels they play. Hugo is an example of that, but others are examples of that too.”

Arne Slot: 'Liverpool had a bit of luck today'
18:36 , Jamie BraidwoodLiverpool head coach Arne Slot has claimed his team had luck on their side for the first time in “weeks” after a wasteful Brighton side missed their chances at Anfield and the hosts secured a 2-0 win.
He told Match of the Day: "Hard work. We had to work really hard for this win because we faced a very good team that kept going to the end. For the first time in weeks, I feel like we had a bit of luck today. We have a clean sheet and in other games we have conceded three without the other team having as many chances.
"In the second half in the moments they had, when we were together in and around our box. We had chances on the counter but I quite liked the way we played. Maybe we deserved this bit of luck, because of the mentality that we showed and the injuries and other things like that."

Arne Slot drops major hint on Mohamed Salah’s future after Liverpool beat Brighton
18:31 , Richard JollyArne Slot has insisted he has “no issue to resolve” now with Mohamed Salah after bringing him back into the Liverpool team following his explosive interview at Leeds.
He said: “For me, there is no issue to resolve. For me, he is now the same as any other player. You talk to your players if you are happy or unhappy with things. There is nothing for me to talk about after what happened against Leeds after the game.”

Arne Slot drops major hint on Mohamed Salah’s future after Liverpool beat Brighton
Another Premier League record for Mohamed Salah
18:16 , Jamie BraidwoodWith his assist for Hugo Ekitike, Mohamed Salah now has 277 goal involvements for Liverpool in the Premier League (188 goals, 89 assists).
It means he has overtaken Wayne Rooney for the most goal involvements for a single club. Rooney had 276 for Manchester United (183 goals, 93 assists).

Salah a 'great professional' as Ekitike heaps praise on 'legend'
17:56 , Jamie BraidwoodMohamed Salah still appears to have the support and respect of his Liverpool team-mates. Hugo Ekitike was lavish in his praise of the forward after his two-goal display against Brighton, in which Salah rather stole the show after coming on from the bench.
"Mohamed is a great, great professional,” Ekitike told BBC Match of the Day. “I look to him as an example. You can see how much he is involved in goals and assists. He is a legend here. To share the pitch is a blessing. That's the kind of player who makes us like to watch football."

Arne Slot 'pleased' with Mohamed Salah's impact
17:42 , Jamie BraidwoodLiverpool head coach Arne Slot has said it was an “easy decision” to include Mohamed Salah in his squad but didn’t elaborate on the conversation they had yesterday.
“I think he was a threat. The first ball he touched, he almost made an assist for Mac Allister. He was constantly involved in the fact we had Mo. Pleasing to see but not a surprise,” Slot told Sky Sports.
"It was an easy decision to put him in the squad. I have said many times before what has been said between us will stay between us. We needed him and he assisted to the 2-0 which is nice for us. We have been so many times this season on the wrong side of the set-piece battle.
"He goes to the Afcon and that means for us another player down. This is what we knew before the season started. Hopefully one or two players can come back from injury."

Salah won't be stopping in the mixed zone

Liverpool's Hugo Ekitike: 'We need to stick together'
17:24 , Jamie BraidwoodLiverpool match-winner Hugo Ekitike spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live after the win over Brighton.
"I was looking for the hat-trick but it is going to be another time. It was good, two goals. We try to stick together and work together. Today wasn't easy. We had to stay compact and stick together. I think we deserved it. We did a great week and let's continue.”
"When you play for Liverpool, you just have to win games. We are Liverpool, we need to win."

What next for Mohamed Salah?
17:12 , Jamie BraidwoodSalah will now head off to join Egypt ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, which begins in Morocco on Sunday 21 December. Egypt play their first game on Monday 22 December.
If Egypt get to the final, played on Sunday 18 January, then Salah could miss up to eight matches for Liverpool. The transfer window also opens on 1 January.
But Salah did not wave goodbye to the Liverpool fans after the win over Brighton, as he did following the draw at Elland Road last week.
He did pat the Liverpool badge and applaud the home fans, like his team-mates, and like most players do after most matches. He seemed to appreciate the support they showed him.
Let’s see if there are any post-game comments from the Egyptian this time.

Salah applauds Liverpool fans, but no wave of farewell?
17:02 , Richard JollyA restorative afternoon for Liverpool and Mo Salah and a fine result. Salah was excellent, albeit without getting a goal. He certainly worked hard. There have been a few hugs with his teammates at the final whistle and he is now applauding the fans, who are clapping him back. It doesn't look like he is waving goodbye, though.

Salah's reaction at full time
17:01 , Jamie BraidwoodSalah starts by shaking hands with the Brighton players, then referee Craig Pawson and the match officials.
Salah then walks away from the Liverpool players after hugging some of his team-mates and applauds to the Liverpool fans.
He is standing on his own, applauding to the fans, but not waving, acknowledging, I think, the support he has received this afternoon.
FULL TIME! Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:59 , Jamie BraidwoodLiverpool win at Anfield in the Premier League for the first time in six weeks! A good week for the Reds and Arne Slot after they backed up their win at Inter Milan to win against Brighton and go sixth.
But all eyes are now on Salah...

Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:57 , Jamie Braidwood90 +7 mins: Another break for Liverpool but Salah gets his pass to Robertson wrong and holds his hand up to acknowledge the error!
Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:55 , Jamie Braidwood90+6 mins: I think the points are in the bag for Liverpool now. Arne Slot’s name gets a rendition from the Kop.
All eyes are now on Mohamed Salah. Will he wave goodbye?
Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:54 , Jamie Braidwood90+4 mins: Chance for Brighton! Alisson flaps at a cross but there’s no one there for Brighton to pounce.
Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:52 , Jamie Braidwood90+2 mins: CHANCE for Salah! It’s a brilliant Liverpool break, and Chiesa looks for him. But Salah lifts his effort over the bar and stays down on the turf in disappointment.

Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:50 , Jamie Braidwood90 mins: EIGHT minutes of added time at Anfield. Arne Slot did not like that. His side conceded a late equaliser at Leeds last week but it would take a miracle for Brighton to rescue this now.
Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:47 , Richard Jolly88 mins: An Anfield ovation for a man playing perhaps his final game here. Yes, James Milner has come on for Brighton.
Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:43 , Richard Jolly82 mins: Liverpool are on to their third right-back of the afternoon, in Curtis Jones, as Szoboszlai, who had not missed a minute in either the Premier or Champions Leagues this season goes off.
Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:38 , Richard Jolly78 mins: Andy Robertson and Isak come on. Wirtz goes off as does Ekitike, who is thus denied the chance of a first Liverpool hat-trick. He will be overshadowed by Salah, but Ekitike has been terrific. He has set a standard Isak should have to match. Slightly oddly, Robertson seems to have come on on the left wing, with Milos Kerkez behind him.

Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:38 , Jamie Braidwood75 mins: Wirtz feeds through Salah, who dribbles into the box but can’t get a clear shot away. Then it’s Brighton’s turn to attack but Wieffer fires over. Liverpool are making two changes. Ekitike’s day is done, he will be replaced by Isak after scoring a potentially game-winning double. Florian Wirtz has looked bright today but is replaced by Andy Robertson.
Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:33 , Jamie Braidwood73 mins: Liverpool have not won a Premier League match at home since 1 November, which was six weeks ago.
Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:31 , Jamie Braidwood70 mins: There is still scope for Brighton to ruin this for Slot and Salah. They have had some of the better chances in the game and looked the more dangerous immediately after half-time. Fabian Hurzeler has brought on Kaoru Mitoma to test the stand-in right-back Szoboszlai and he has already had one shot.
Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:30 , Jamie Braidwood69 mins: Anfield has been a quiet place at times over the last few weeks but it is rocking now. Szoboszlai is back up and carrying on, which is a relief. He has been their best player this season.
Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:28 , Jamie Braidwood68 mins: Brighton threaten as the substitute Kaoru Mitoma is put through but Alisson denies him with the forward under pressure.
The concern for Liverpool is that Dominik Szoboszlai has stayed down.
Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:25 , Jamie Braidwood65 mins: Four goals in two Premier League games for Hugo Ekitike, as Alexander Isak watches on from the bench. That’s a big one for Liverpool, too, with their one-goal lead looking a little shaky.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-0 Brighton
16:21 , Richard JollyA Salah assist. The unmarked Ekitike headed in the Egyptian's corner. Each has looked for the other in the last few minutes. Now Liverpool have benefited.
Ekitike’s name rings around Anfield. Salah’s too.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-0 Brighton (EKITIKE 62')
16:20 , Jamie BraidwoodEkitike is at the double as Liverpool score from a corner for the first time in the Premier League this season! And it’s Salah who has the assist after swinging the cross into the box!

Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
16:19 , Jamie Braidwood61 mins: Chance for Salah! Ekitike looks for Salah as Liverpool counter again, Verbruggen punches clear for a corner!
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
16:18 , Jamie Braidwood59 mins: Brighton are almost caught on the counter as Salah releases Ekitike, who shoots off target. Dunk goes into the book after taking out Mac Allister in the build-up.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
16:16 , Jamie Braidwood56 mins: Brighton continue to threaten! It’s Gruda this time who flashes the shot wide, narrowly missing Alisson’s goal, after creating space for the effort. They should be level by now, especially after Gomez’s big miss from just four yards.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
16:11 , Richard JollyAnother shot from Ekitike, who has been really bright today. It has been another game to demonstrate that he has been far and away Liverpool's best striker this season and that Alexander Isak, when he next gets on the pitch, could do with being this lively.

Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
16:10 , Jamie Braidwood48 mins: CHANCE! Brighton are inches away from being level! Wieffer puts in a great cross and Gomez, who could have been sent off late in the first half, arrives at the back post but puts wide from four yards!
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
16:09 , Jamie Braidwood47 mins: Ekitike glides forward but his shot is curled wide of the post. Almost a sensational solo goal.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
16:06 , Jamie BraidwoodWe’re back underway! No changes from Brighton, but their bench looks strong with Danny Welbeck and Kaoru Mitoma options if they continue to trail in the second half.
Premier League statement on Gomez's challenge on Wirtz
15:55 , Jamie Braidwood“The referee’s call of yellow card to Gomez was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the challenge on Wirtz deemed not to be with excessive force and not serious foul play.”

Elsewhere in the Premier League
15:53 , Jamie BraidwoodEverton have been on top at Stamford Bridge but it’s Chelsea who lead thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto, both scored against the run of play.
HALF TIME! Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:49 , Richard JollyQuite a lively first half, whether with the spectacular start or the early emergence of Salah from the bench. Brighton have played their part in an open game. Minteh has threatened to make amends for his part in the Liverpool goal but the home side probably merit their lead.

Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:49 , Jamie Braidwood45+2 mins: Wirtz has been floored by a high tackle from Gomez.... VAR has had a look but will not intervene.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:45 , Jamie Braidwood45 mins: We’ve got three minutes of added time to play after that Joe Gomez injury.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:44 , Jamie Braidwood43 mins: Can either side grab a goal late in the half? Gravenberch has curled straight at Verbruggen from the outside of the box.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:42 , Jamie Braidwood41 mins: A decent counter-attack opportunity from Brighton as Minteh is released by a long ball. Konate got across just in time to cut out the danger as Gomez lurked for the chance.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:37 , Richard Jolly37 mins: A couple of early observations. Salah is putting in conspicuous amounts of effort and he has been willing to pass the ball. All of which suggests he is aware of some criticisms of him in other games.

Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:34 , Jamie Braidwood33 mins: Quite the twist to the afternoon as Slot arrives onto the pitch far earlier than expected. And Liverpool are enjoying one of their better displays this season.

Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:31 , Jamie Braidwood31 mins: Another chance for Liverpool, who are creating opportunities with the speed and movement of their attack. Szoboszlai, Salah and Wirtz combine before Ekitike curls wide.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:29 , Jamie Braidwood28 mins: Salah is immediately involved, too, setting up a chance for Mac Allister to cross for Ekitike. The Brighton goalkeeper Verbruggen is sharp off his line to save.

Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:27 , Richard JollyIncredible! Salah is on after just 25 minutes, due to the injury suffered by Gomez. Salah is cheered onto the pitch ahead of what is possibly his final Liverpool game.
And Szoboszlai goes to right-back, not for the first time this season.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:25 , Richard JollyAnd, instead of a right-back, it is Mohamed Salah coming on. A standing ovation from many supporters, with huge cheers.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:25 , Jamie Braidwood24 mins: Joe Gomez is down which is a concern for Liverpool for multiple reasons. Partly because he has started very well but partly because, with Conor Bradley banned and Jeremie Frimpong injured, they are short of right-backs.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:24 , Jamie Braidwood22 mins: If Liverpool are preparing for a post-Salah world, the partnership between Ekitike and Wirtz is offering some encouragement.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:22 , Jamie Braidwood20 mins: Good work from Wirtz to dribble into the box and set up Ekitike with a clever flick. Ekitike flashes his shot across the target and wide.
Anfield erupts into applause in the 20th minute in tribute for Diogo Jota.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:18 , Jamie Braidwood16 mins: Rutter is next to trouble the goal but he was flagged offside after thrashing into the side-netting. There are surely more goals to come if this continues.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:15 , Jamie Braidwood15 mins: CHANCE! Good work from Liverpool’s Gomez as Joe bursts past Diego and tees up Ekitike. The Frenchman flashes over from the pull-back.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:14 , Jamie Braidwood14 mins: Alisson saves from Diego Gomez! The Brighton midfielder makes a clever run and is spotted by Minteh, who plays a cute reverse pass. Alisson gets out quick and spreads himself well, smothering the shot.
Two Brighton chances in quick succession.

Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:13 , Richard Jolly13 mins: Virgil van Dijk seems to be taking Liverpool's goal kicks. Not sure if that is to bait Brighton's press and use his long passing or indicative that Alisson has a minor problem.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:13 , Jamie Braidwood12 mins: An opportunity for Wirtz in the box but Van Hecke steps across to block.
At the other end, Minteh attempts to make amends but his low shot flashes wide of Alisson’s far post.
Brighton cut Liverpool open rather easily there.
Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:09 , Jamie Braidwood8 mins. After Minteh’s strange pass out of defence, Joe Gomez made a brave header to set up Ekitike, whose goal has been clocked at 46 seconds - the fastest of the season so far.
The Frenchman was ruthless in front of goal to lash Liverpool ahead.

Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:06 , Jamie Braidwood5 mins: It’s rapid from Hugo Ekitike, who has his sixth goal of the Premier League season. After a fast start and bit of a drought, he now has three in two starts, following his double at Leeds.
All the more important as Alexander Isak and Mohamed Salah watch on from the bench.

Liverpool 1-0 Brighton
15:03 , Richard JollySurely the fastest goal of the Premier League season from Hugo Ekitike, all stemming from a strange cross-field ball by Yankuba Minteh. Joe Gomez gets an assist for heading it down to Ekitike. Meanwhile, after using a midfield diamond in Milan, Slot has switched to more of a 4-1-4-1 with Wirtz on the left.
GOALLLLL!!!!! Liverpool 1-0 Brighton (EKITIKE 1')
15:01 , Jamie BraidwoodWOW! Liverpool are ahead in seconds! Brighton have gifted the opener but Hugo Ekitike fires Liverpool ahead inside the opening minute, the fastest goal of the Premier League season so far!
KICK-OFF! Liverpool 0-0 Brighton
15:01 , Jamie BraidwoodAnd we’re underway!
Liverpool v Brighton
15:00 , Richard JollyBrighton are in a strange lilac away kit and Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak are in the tracksuit tops of substitutes. Liverpool are four unbeaten and Brighton are a team who beat them in May, just after they had become champions.
The teams are out and Salah takes his place on the bench, where a posse of photographers are there to snap Salah’s expression as he watches on before kick-off.
Liverpool v Brighton kicking off next
14:55 , Jamie BraidwoodA smiling Salah before kick-off. You would imagine it won’t stay that way if he has to watch another match from the bench...

Team news reminder
14:52 , Flo CliffordLiverpool XI: Alisson, Gomez, van Dijk, Konate, Kerkez, Wirtz, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Jones, Ekitike, Gravenberch

Salah's last dance?
14:47 , Flo CliffordWill Slot turn to Salah today? The big question...

Salah warming up at Anfield
14:45 , Jamie BraidwoodHere he is. Salah appeared to be in good spirits as he headed out to warm up at Anfield ahead of Liverpool’s game against Brighton, in his first appearance since his stunning interview last weekend.
I wonder what the reaction from the Liverpool fans will be when Salah’s name is read out?

Match stats
14:36 , Chris WilsonLiverpool have conceded 48 goals in 35 Premier League games in 2025 – only twice before have they shipped 50+ goals in a year in the competition, doing so in 2012 (51) and 2014 (52).
The Reds haven’t scored in the opening 45 minutes in any of their last five Premier League matches, their longest run without a first half goal since between January and March 2021.
Four games in 10 days 'almost criminal', says Slot
14:23 , Flo CliffordOn the win over Inter Milan, Slot says: “Quite proud because playing four games in 10 days - that is almost criminal for football players.
“Especially if you have only 13-14 outfield players that are available. We accept playing a lot of games, but four in 10 days. That is a lot to take for players.”
Slot on Isak's 'minor' knock and Salah's presence
14:16 , Flo CliffordLiverpool boss Arne Slot doesn’t have a huge amount to say on Mohamed Salah’s presence in the squad today. He tells BBC Sport he’s happy with how conversations have gone and the position they’ve reached: “Yes, of course, otherwise I would have done [it] probably differently. Like you said, he is back in the squad and on the bench today.”
Asked about Alexander Isak’s injury, he says: “Minor. Got a knock in both games. Games come quite fast and there is also not so much to choose from. Nice to have someone from the bench who can impact the game.”
Salah back in the squad
14:02 , Flo CliffordSo, Liverpool start without Mohamed Salah for the fifth game in a row - but he at least makes it into the squad this time, and could come off the bench.
The Egyptian has himself hyped up this game as a farewell, and it certainly would be his last in a while as he heads to the Africa Cup of Nations straight after.
But will he come back to Liverpool? His inclusion in the squad suggests there has at least been some form of reconciliation between him and manager Arne Slot.
Team news - Brighton
13:58 , Flo CliffordFabian Hurzeler makes two changes from Brighton’s 1-1 draw with West Ham.
De Cuyper and Welbeck drop to the bench, with Gruda and Hinselwood coming in.
Team news - Liverpool
13:52 , Flo CliffordArne Slot makes two changes from the side which beat Inter Milan in the week.
Andy Robertson and Alexander Isak drop to the bench, with Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz brought into the starting XI.
But the big news is that Mohamed Salah is back in the squad after missing out on the trip to Milan - albeit only on the bench here, as his future at Anfield remains in doubt.

Salah, Isak on the bench
13:48 , Richard JollyHe is not fit to start. Though the he in question is Alexander Isak, injured again. Mo Salah is back but only on the bench as, for the fifth straight game, he is not in the Liverpool starting 11. Florian Wirtz is, though, even if the game could be defined by Salah, whether or not he comes on.

'I have no reasons to not want him to stay' - Slot on Salah rift
12:20 , Jamie BraidwoodOn whether Salah, who is Liverpool’s third-highest goalscorer of all time, would return to the squad ahead of a potential Anfield farewell, Slot said: "I will have a conversation with Mo this morning, the outcome of that conversation determines how things will look tomorrow.”
Salah has been an unused substitute for two of Liverpool’s last three games and has not started any of the last three amid Liverpool’s worst run of results in 70 years, with the star forward claiming he had “earned” his position in the team.
The Egyptian will attract interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia in January but The Independent understands Slot’s decision to leave Salah out of his plans was influenced by his upcoming departure to Afcon and Slot suggested Salah still could have a future at Anfield.
"I have no reasons to not want him to stay,” Slot said.

Good afternoon
12:00 , Chris WilsonHello and welcome to The Independent’s live coverage of today’s Premier League match between Liverpool and Brighton at Anfield.
The Reds are looking to further ease the pressure on manager Arne Slot after a vital midweek win over Inter Milan.
Slot is under increased scrutiny as the fallout from Mohamed Salah’s explosive interview continues, and while Liverpool stayed within reach of the top eight in the Champions League league phase table with the win at the San Siro, Salah’s future remains the biggest talking point at Anfield.
The Egyptian was left out of the squad that travelled to Milan amid rumours linking him with a January move away from Anfield, and while Slot has support over the incident, things could unravel quickly if negative results continue.
And the tough fixtures continue to come thick and fast for the Reds as they welcome Brighton, with the Seagulls sitting two places above the hosts ahead of kick-off after last week’s draw with West Ham.
