Liverpool unveil new home kit paying tribute to Anfield icon Bill Shankly

Liverpool's home kit for the 2023-24 season will pay tribute to legendary manager Bill Shankly with a nod to the kit worn in the Reds' last season under the Scottish boss.

The unveiling marks the 50th anniversary of Shankly's farewell campaign, which ended with the Reds winning the FA Cup. Roy Evans, who later managed the club, was a member of the squad along with the likes of Kevin Keegan and Phil Thompson.

A red shirt with a white collar and cuffs, the new shirt is said to be inspired by the one worn by Shankly's Liverpool team half a century ago. On the back is a nod to the victims of the Hillsborough disaster, with the 97 emblem and eternal flames to honour the lives lost after the 1989 incident.

“The new home shirt is a classic," men's team captain Jordan Henderson said. Players from the men's and women's teams have been seen modelling the new shirt, while Henderson and his team-mates will debut it in the home Premier League game against Aston Villa on May 20.

"Given the inspiration behind the design it feels iconic and a nod to the history of this great club," the England midfielder added. "We’re looking forward to wearing it at Anfield for the Villa game.”

Women’s vice-captain Taylor Hinds also spoke about the new shirt: “We’re always proud to wear the LFC jersey," Hinds said. "It’s always exciting to see the new design and when it has a link to the history of this club it makes it even more special. We’re excited to wear next season.”

The new home shirt will be released on May 18. Fans wishing to have theirs delivered on launch day can pre-order from the club’s official online store, in official LFC stores (UK and Internationally) and on the LFC Retail App.

With a few weeks of the 2022-23 season remaining, Liverpool's men are yet to learn their fate when it comes to their Premier League finishing position. Victory over Fulham on Wednesday means they still have a chance of a top four finish, though nothing is certain.

"I don't like thinking about other teams," captain Henderson said after a fifth straight league win. "Especially with the inconsistency that we've had for the majority of the season, it's about focusing on what we can do and what we need to do as a team better.

"You get what you deserve in this league. So you never know what can happen in football but for us it's about focusing on the next game, the next challenge and hopefully that puts us in good stead come the end of this season and the start of next."
