Liverpool unhappy with Loris Karius treatment as goalkeeper returns to square one

So what now for Loris Karius?

The Liverpool goalkeeper has endured a well-documented nightmare couple of years since the 2018 Champions League final.

A move to Istanbul, on a two-year loan deal to Besiktas, was supposed to breathe fresh life into a career that had stalled badly in the wake of events inside the NSC Olimpiyskiy.

A rebuilding of Karius's confidence, it was hoped, would bring about a happier, more settled footballer for Besiktas to make theirs, permanently, after agreeing a loan fee of around £2million in August 2018.

But while Karius was a regular at Vodafone Park, high-profile disputes over payment saw him eventually cancel his contract in Turkey this week.

After going as long as four months without pay last year, Liverpool stepped in to offer their assistance, before his wages were withheld once more during the current suspension of football.

Fearing he had little choice, Karius took the decision to prematurely wrap up his time in Turkey this week.

"It’s a shame it comes to an end like this but you should know that I have tried everything to solve this situation without any problems," he posted in an open letter on Monday following the termination of his contract.

"I was very patient for months telling the board over and over again. Same things happened already last year.

"Unfortunately they haven’t tried to solve this situational problem and even refused my suggestion to help by taking a pay cut."

It is thought that UEFA will step in to try and resolve the complaint but the ECHO understands that senior figures at Anfield are unhappy with how their player has been treated in the Turkish capital.

Key members of the Liverpool set-up are frustrated at Besiktas' behaviour with Karius withheld payments for months in Istanbul on two different occasions.

As things stand now, though, his season is over, with Liverpool unable to register him for the return of Premier League football.

Even when Melwood re-opens its doors, it is unclear if a decision will be taken to permit Karius to train with his parent club once more.

The preference, it is believed, is to give him an extended break and to find a permanent buyer for the 26-year-old.

It leaves Karius once more at a crossroads in his career.

It's been nearly four years since he moved from Mainz to Anfield in a £4.7million deal and while he didn't immediately become first-choice under Jurgen Klopp, by the end of the 2017/18 campaign, he was recognised as Liverpool's No.1.

Since that fateful night in Kiev, Karius has struggled to build up any real momentum, despite playing over 60 times for Besiktas across the last two seasons.

He returns to Liverpool without concluding his loan-stay in full and in search of another fresh start.

With Adrian providing back-up to Alisson Becker in the Liverpool goal, there is little hope of Karius reviving his fortunes with his parent club.

He still has over two years remaining on his current deal and the Reds will be relaxed in their attempts to sell him in the transfer window.

Liverpool are still likely to make a profit on a £4.7m shot-stopper whose last appearance for the club was in the biggest fixture in football two years ago.

For now, though, Karius will take stock ahead of his next move. It is one he must get right.
