Liverpool U23s clash in Kirkby called off due to coronavirus concerns

Liverpool's clash against Wolfsburg in the Premier League International Cup has been postponed due to concerns over the spread of coronavirus.

The Reds' under-23s were due to play the Bundesliga side on Tuesday evening at the Academy in Kirkby in a quarter-final tie.

However, the game was called off on Monday morning before Wolfsburg travelled to Merseyside. It's understood the German side were reluctant to travel.

No new date has been arranged for the game, which would have been the first U23s outing following the departure of former coach Neil Critchley to take over as manager of League One side Blackpool.

The coronavirus has become a major threat to sporting events across the globe.

Several Champions League games will be played behind closed doors this week while FIFA have announced Asian qualifiers for the World Cup in March and June will now be played at later dates.

Sporting governing bodies and broadcasters will meet with government officials later on Monday to discuss the staging of events behind closed doors if the outbreak worsens in England and mass gatherings are banned.

However, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: "At this stage we're not in the territory of cancelling or postponing events.

Culture Secretary says sport events will go ahead despite coronavirus fears

"We will be driven by the advice of the chief medical officer as we continue.

"I do want to emphasise in relation to sporting events, any talk of cancellation is very premature indeed. At the moment there is no evidence to suggest we should be doing that and we don't have any plans to."
