Liverpool trio fly to Qatar for Club World Cup after Aston Villa defeat

Three of Liverpool's young stars who featured against Aston Villa on Tuesday night are flying out to link up with Jurgen Klopp's senior squad in Qatar - but Harvey Elliott isn't among them.

Sixteen-year-old Elliott was the youngest and most impressive member of the Reds' youngest ever side which featured in the 5-0 Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat at Villa Park.

The attacker earned rave reviews for his performance, with ex-Reds midfielder Jamie Redknapp calling the former Fulham teenager "the real deal" after his display.

Liverpool are well-stocked with attacking players in their Club World Cup squad though, and so Klopp has decided to leave Elliott at home so he can get more game-time with the under-23s.

The youngster also suffered a knock late in the Villa game and so will be assessed back at Liverpool.

Goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and defenders Ki-Jana Hoever and Sepp van den Berg are travelling out to link up with the squad, and will increase Liverpool's party to the full compliment of 23.

The Reds are short on defensive cover out in Qatar, with both Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren absent from the squad through injury.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are expected to continue their partnership at the back for Wednesday's semi-final against Monterrey in Doha, and should also be paired together if the Reds reach Saturday's final against Flamengo.

Dutch pair Van den Berg and Hoever will then act as cover, with the impressive Hoever - who can play all across the back line - declared fit after he suffered with cramp in the closing stages of the Villa defeat.

Klopp is expected to rotate his side for the Monterrey clash on Wednesday, with the likes of Divock Origi, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all pushing for starts.

Roberto Firmino could be rested, with Gini Wijnaldum is injured.
