Liverpool transformed into 1940s New York for German U-boat series Das Boot

The street next to the Cunard Building was transformed into 1940s New York this weekend for a film shoot of Sky drama Das Boot.

Classic cars, including Manhattan's iconic yellow taxis, were parked in a side street next to Liverpool's waterfront ahead of filming.

There were also wooden telephone boxes and a newspaper stand, complete with adverts for Derry's Malted Milk, and actors dressed in military uniform.

Das Boot is a 2018 German TV series , based on the best-selling novel by Lothar-Gunther Buchheim, about the claustrophobic wartime experience of a German submarine.

Council worker Camilla Mankabady tweeted: "Love that my workplace has been transformed into 1940's New York."

Das Boot premiered on Sky Atlantic in February 2019 in the UK to rave reviews, and the filming is for a second series.
