Liverpool transfer targets, rumours and likelihood of them joining the club

It isn't just on the pitch that Liverpool have been getting it right of late.

Off it, the Reds' transfer work over the past two years has been nothing short of remarkable, as they've used both the £142million sale of Philippe Coutinho and their impressive recruitment skills to bring the club to this point.

Jurgen Klopp's side are the current champions of Europe, the world and, most importantly to the club's fans, the surely soon to be champions of England, but that hasn't stopped the rumour mill turning and linking them with several new names.

Let's be honest though, there aren't going to be any big new additions to the Reds' squad this month.

The signing of Takumi Minamino which was completed prior to the January window opening is very likely to be the only major arrival until the summer, and even then it wouldn't be a surprise if whoever they did sign was a name that came out of nowhere.

But what of the players who have been linked with the club? Will those moves happen?

Here we evaluate some possibilities.

Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain)

The big one.

Mbappe's name continues to be linked with the Reds, in part due to the fact that he seems to enjoy saying nice things about them.

The club's status and standing these days, as well as the new Nike deal, means that #Mbappe2020 is more than just a pipedream, but it's going to take some serious money and probably the departure of one of the front three to make it happen.

Will it happen? Maybe if Mo Salah goes, which is a possibility, but it still seems too much like fantasy.

Isco (Real Madrid)

Seemingly forever on the verge of leaving Real Madrid, Isco's name has cropped up again in links with the Reds in recent days.

You wouldn't put your house on it.

Will it happen? Nah.

Fabian Ruiz (Napoli)

The 23-year-old Spain international was suddenly linked with a big move to the Reds over the weekend, but given that the central midfielder would cost upwards of £45million it doesn't really seem to make sense.

Liverpool already have Fabinho, while Jordan Henderson is in the form of his life.

Will it happen? You wouldn't have thought so.

Ugurcan Cakir (Trabzonspor)

The name that keeps popping up in the transfer window.

Goalkeeper Cakir either has a very good agent or is actually a target for the Reds, but given the goalkeepers on their staff then a move doesn't really make sense.

Will it happen? Caoimhin Kelleher should leave on loan fairly soon, but Adrian has proved to be a fine backup to Alisson and should be kept on next season.

Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund)

The Englishman could be on the move in the summer (Dean Mouhtaropoulos)

The more you think about this one, the more it adds up.

Sancho seems to be determined to leave Dortmund in the summer, and if he fancies a return to England then Liverpool have to be every player's most attractive option right now.

Again it might hinge on a sale, but this one has legs.

Will it happen? You feel that a few things have to fall into place first, but if it all adds up then it would be a hugely exciting deal.

Kai Havertz (Bayer Leverkusen)

The German international is name familiar to many a transfer window, and you'd think that this summer has to be the one when he moves on.

Liverpool though? The numbers may not add up.

Will it happen? Liverpool are well resourced in midfield, and the numbers involved in the deal seem a bit too steep.

Timo Werner (RB Leipzig)

It is tempting to think that as with Sancho this would hinge on a departure, but perhaps not.

Werner would be a bit cheaper than the Englishman, and maybe a season learning from the famed front three would work out in the long run.

Will it happen? It's another one that makes sense the more you think about it, and a summer move would represent a real step forward in Klopp's evolution on his side.
