Liverpool 'transfer target' was scouted by former Everton manager Roberto Martinez

Former Everton manager Roberto Martinez has revealed he tracked Liverpool defender Andy Robertson during his time in the Premier League.

Martinez, appointed Belgium boss in 2016, took charge of both Wigan Athletic and Everton in the top-flight, winning the FA Cup and being relegated with the Latics before guiding the Toffees to the Europa League.

He was sacked after three years at Goodison Park but watched both Robertson and Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Adama Traore - who has been linked with Liverpool - during his time in the English top flight with both players now set to meet at Anfield on Sunday evening.

"One of the highlights of the game will be Adama Traoré up against Andrew Robertson," Martinez told The Times. "They are two players I know well. During my time in the Premier League I scouted both closely.

"I travelled to Dundee United to see Robertson before he moved to Hull City and you always knew he had everything for a modern footballer. He can defend with a back four but also produce a lot of assists.

"When Traoré was a youngster at Barcelona you could see he is someone so different with that pace, power and raw facility to go past people. Now he has matured and arrived at the perfect club with the perfect management of Nuno Santo."

Martinez also backed Diogo Jota to put his 'attachment' to Wolves to good use on Sunday.

Jota has scored five Premier League goals in eight appearances for Liverpool since his £45m move from Molineux and the Belgium manager praised the 'aware and intelligent' forward.

"Whenever players move on, the first fixture they look for is the one against their old club," Martinez said.

"It is a success story in Jota’s case and I am sure he will be excited about playing against a team to which he will always have an attachment. If anything, it gives even more stimulation.

"He is a very aware and intelligent player who is in control of his emotions. He can use that attachment to good use."
